- Richard Spaven´s unique, subtle style of drumming has made him a sought after performer among successful global artists such as José James, Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra and Gregory Porter to name a few.
José James referred to Rich as “one of the most unique artists in the world” and hypes his personal style as “the point where jazz meets the world.”
With the “Yamaha Sessions” series Yamaha Music shines a spotlight on established musicians for a pure musical performance, giving artists the time and platform to present their art to a dedicated audience.
In the latest edition Yamaha Music welcome Spaven to the stage for a unique set, accompanied by his trio: Robin Mullarkey (bass) and Stuart McCallum (guitar), plus special guest - virtuoso vocalist Cleveland Watkiss.
Bassist Robin Mullarkey is an established London musician with an eclectic and accomplished musical history, recent projects include recordings and live performances with Jacob Collier and Natalie Williams.
Guitarist Stuart McCullum adds his beautiful ambient-electronica-jazz soundscape to the session. Stuart who also writes and records with his own project, has a wealth of experience in many different musical environments and genres.
Original music composed and arranged by Richard Spaven.
Richard plays Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple in 18"x14", 10"x7" and 14"x13" Configuration with 14"x 6" Absolute Hybrid Maple Snare.

Mr Robin Mullarkey quietly tearing it up on the bass, as usual 🔥
Richard is my favourite drummer right now. Such a unique style, such unique movements as well. Kinda strange, but as if it’s the only right way to play the drums. As if every other drummer seems to move in the wrong way. Everything is so fluid, groovy and perfect. Movement is such an important part of good drumming and Richard perfected it. I can’t remember many drummers that have ever impressed me as much as Richard does. He is such an inspiration to me/my drumming. So, so classy. Less chops, more taste, that’s what’s up!
Lúkas Bmr check out Marcus Gilmore. Feels pretty right as well :)
See Luke Flowers, Yussef Dayes and T. Daniel Howard (kinda hard to find stuff on Daniel, but listen to Motion by Cinematic Orchestra for some beautiful drumming).
@@kawabungadad8945 Thumbs up for mentioning my man Yussef! ;) 'Black Focus' by Yussef Kamaal is an awesome album.
My exact thoughts brother, I was so moved when I first heard him. It changed the way I WANT to play, it changed the way I approach cymbals and the way I hear notes as well. It was one of those epiphany moments for me as well buddy.
@@kawabungadad8945 all very cult drummers. Cinematic orchestra has marked a before after in my musical life
I'm here mostly for Stuart McCullum. Wonderful playing and amazing tone, using a simple Yamaha Revstar guitar and a simple Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp and some delay. Apparently you don't need anything more fancy to sound absolutely amazing. The whole ensamble sounds killer.
0:14 LAW
5:08 B-LINE
8:12 Greater Good
11:47 TOKO
16:38 Moment Us
Just Amazing
Thanks!
@@davida825 Don't know those two. They must be new or too old haha
Is this music available for purchase anywhere?
The missing track is Greater Good. Written by Richard - recorded by Robert Mitchell 3io / also a José James version. 👍
@@finelinerecords3357 great! Thanks
That snare is insane. 💣❤
You should release this version of "Law" as a single. I think it is extremely good.
Sounds awesome, hats off to the engineer for capturing these performances and making them huge.
Beautiful, poetic, entrancing - Spaven is the king of the pocket.
Almost agree with u..
The King of pocket it's a little bit extra for him...
a masterclass in taste, touch and tone
not fair.. i want MORE!!!! #CraveTheSpave
Gots to give it up to those Meinl cymbals too. Spaven could make sardine tins sound amazing, but still this Yamaha/Meinl set up is beautiful.
That drum set looks amazing! The entire band is awesome
11:18. Bass player comes back to the theme a tiny bit early. Gotta love how seamless they make it sound. He barely does a face, guitar player doesn't flinch. If not for the fact that I listened to that song a bunch to analyse what the hell is happening on drums, would have thought this was part of the song. Such high level of professionalism.
I'm awestruck. The mixing for this video is next level quality.
Each band member's talents shine through so well, and the sound in general is just balanced so beautifully.
cheers! 😉
So beautiful. Calmed me right down. Thank you.
my main man Richard Spaven grooving up this session! I just love when Rich freaks out ;-)
This is so good. Loving finding it!
dude, so clean, articulate and controlled... one of my fav. drummers right now...

Come to Italy Richard!! Amazing, totally amazing
Spaven you are a story teller! AMAZING!

It's wonderful to see a drummer stay in the pocket and incorporate small fills.👍
Sooo good!
наслажденье) Спасибо
Amazing job!!!
incredible performance!
I love small kits like this for really intimate sounds.
Qué genio! Que maravilla de sensibilidad que tiene Spaven.
Holyfawk badass!
This is amazing, beautiful, spiritual, inspiring, relaxing and exiting, setting my soul in swinging twists, breathing and flowing........ just real cool !!

FIRE
yeah !
Nice setup!
druming is so fast but still it is so calm music love it!
this is way too good ....
awesome
yea baby!
Yes lads it's the fuego
Yamaha is the best🤟🏾
Thank you Yamaha for putting this together. I was not a Yamaha user as such while i ve always reckoned the quality of your products and your roster. But I got the opportunity to buy a 14"x 6" Absolute Hybrid Maple Snare as it is showcased in this video. This has now become my main wood snare for recording. It is perfect with an ambassador coated. The perfect amount of warmth, punch, cut and overtone. Good job.
McCallum + Spaven = Sonic Bliss

♥ 🎶 🔥 😊
I couldn't help imagining Geoff Farina singing over this.
Tasteful Low Volume Chopper
15:37 omg!
Nathan A. Pretty freaking rad! The bass groove kind of reminds me of when you're running out of time in Mario.
топовый драмминг, сымаю шляпу
👍🏽👍🏼👍🏻👍
👍
Does he tape the cymbal to the snare? What ride is that?
What guitar is he using?
all day long. 24 seven. 365 days. boom.
24 spaven
what splash is on his snare? :)
I cant find these drum configuration (hybrid Maple with 18 inch Bassdrum ) on the Internet. I Just find it with a 20 inch Bassdrum.
Does anybody know, where I could buy It?
Is this the 15" Byzance Hat?
Mannnnnn that lick a 2:38 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
anyone know what cymbals he's using?
rjsbeats he changes rides often but the 16” extra dry medium thin hi hats and the 20” extra dry thin Crash seem to be staples of his setup these days. I’ve seen him use 22” extra dry medium rides, 22” extra dry thin rides, 20 and 22” vintage pure rides, and even a 24” big apple dark ride.
If you want to emulate his recordings I’m pretty sure it’s the extra dry thin ride. These are all from the byzance line of course. I’m not sure what his aux hat setup is here, you don’t see him often using that.
Hope this helps.
Fantastic performances, but let's address the real elephant in the room here. Only Yamaha could make an 18" bass drum that sounds bigger than most 22" bass drums! hahahaha
I love small kicks
Thats probably the sound guys responsibility.
A proper sound guy would know that a good sound comes from the source. That being Spaven, a phenomenal drummer with phenomenal technique, as well as yamaha making insanely high quality musical instruments that sound good without the need of doing much post work.
Very well said. We can only record whats already there, which in this case is a wonderful drummer and well-tuned, high quality instruments.
For the curious: in this case using a vintage Siemens V276a preamp with a Neumann TLM170 condensor on the kick with a little bit of ADT TM105 equalizer, boosting 60Hz, cutting 300Hz, adding a little top end sheen to give it some weigth, warmth, definition and air while making it work well with the other instruments in the mix.
It sounds great! Woud love to know some more details of the recording setup if you'll share?:)
Water.
😆👍👍💪💪
Suuuuper tasty!
is it just the mix? how are these drums so open and so short, punchy at the same time ?
GamesHaiku probably a combination of the mix and the drums to be honest. They are super high quality drums, the absolute hybrids are incredible drums. And the mix is definitely top notch as well. Deadly combination.
And player....
Hard to watch with all of your "epic" camera shots.. great listen, though. Next time showcase the band and not the back of someone's head for half a second, then an out of focus drum kit with only part of the drumstick In focus. I know a camera dolly has wheels but it isn't a toy..
it's the warp stabilizer for me.
No offense i just wish these were instrumental only. The ambient guitar is way too beautiful. Singing kinda took me out the zone in first song
Superb, I just wish it was instrumental. Those vocals don't belong there at all, very unfitting.
why do people have to put things on their snare drum?
Dr. Panzersauce they don’t have to. They choose to, out of artistic, creative, and spiritual preference.
I saw a vid of spaven playing on a pretty wide open snare drum and it didn’t make sense at all for his style
Because it sounds great!!
dampening for overtone and sustain control.
You could also use an old tune setting on the drums where you can adjust the tone from just the buttom of the snare top at 8, 6, and 4 o clock
For the same reason that people choose different heads, cymbals, drums, sticks, etc...
To get a different sound, texture, feel, rebound, flavor...
To sound just like someone else...
To sound nothing like anyone else...
To experiment...
To create...
To discover...
To break out of limiting constraints...
To challenge assumptions and preconceptions...
To transcend traditional boundaries and discover a new way to fly...
watkiss ruined it for me the trio dosen't need a hype man. It just sounded cringe. Too bad too cuz Spaven has chops.
SO good.
