- In this video, I have tested a 440VAC 30 MFD start capacitor by using 4 different methods. So that if you don't have a Capacitance meter, still you can test the capacitors.
Previous Video:
How to Test Capacitors with and without Multi-meter.
• How to Test Capacitors...
01:13 [1st method:]
In the first method, I have tested the start capacitor without using any multimeter. If you don't have the multimeter or any small DC source then you can use this method. But you have to take proper safety precautions.
03:22 [2nd method:]
In this method, I have used a 20 volt DC source to charge the capacitor,
and a small DC load to discharge it.
04:37 [3rd method:]
In the 3rd method, I have used a multi-meter that has ohm scale, to test the start capacitor. with the above 3 methods, you can check the charging and discharging of the capacitor.
06:24 [4th method:]
In the last method, I have used a multimeter that has capacitance (Farad) scale to test the capacitor. This is the most accurate method for testing the capacitor.

sir how to identify the starting and running capacitor
You can identify both capacitors by observing how they are connected with the starting (auxiliary ) and running (main) windings.
Starting capacitor will always have high capacitance, its start from 80-110 uF.
It should b connected with starting (aux winding) in series with clutch. Besides this the running capacitor is always cannected with one end of both windings.
I have a Crompton water pump of 1 hp, recently I replaced the capacitor with same MFD but my previous capacitor has two terminal or wire in it and the new one which I purchased has 4 terminal, can in install it to the new one?
I've got an old motor with a start capacitor, the motor only hums when I try to start it. I cleaned the centrifugal switch contacts and it still only hums on start...... so I wanted to test the capacitor and that's how I wound up here. Now I shall go test the capacitor, I'll be right back with the results........ and I'm back and still alive .... the capacitor on the motor is DEAD, won't hold a charge after numerous attempts. Another capacitor I happened to have did hold a charge and a nice spark on the run and start side. I 'll order the correct capacitor for the old motor and see if that will get it to start properly. Thanks for the youtube. No telling how many motors go to the scrap yard when a new capacitor would fix them. Thanks again.
Thank you.
It should be realized that when applying a capacitor to AC mains and removing it, there will be a DC voltage present.
The size of the voltage will be determined by when the supply was removed in the AC cycle. It could be anywhere between 0 and +/- 340V DC ( as the peak DC voltage is 1.414 times the AC RMS voltage,
My method is to connect the capacitor to a IEC lead, plugging it into a power point and switching the power ON and OFF briefly. I then remove the lead from the mains supply & I measure the voltage with the multimeter and look for a voltage >300 Volts. Discharge the capacitor by short circuiting it and repeat the process several times for voltage >300 Volts.
Then measure the voltage every 5 minutes or so & if the capacitor is still charged to the same voltage, you have a good capacitor. If not it is leaky to some degree and should be replaced.
Discharge the capacitor before removing it from the IEC connector!
I don't think we should be showing anyone "poking things into power points directly"
If you do this sort of testing a lot, make up a lead with insulated alligator clips (sometimes know as a suicide cord), but do not leave it lying around!
I am agreed.
What about this if we connect the capacitor in series with 220 volt A.C bulb of 60 or 100 watt?
what is the meaning IEC lead.
Hi. Thanks so much. You've save me around 4900 rupees
Electrics 101 Indian style...
"if it making sparks, everyting ok" 🤦🏻♂️
Thumbs up for anyone encouraging poking bare wires in a plug socket. Who needs a multimeter. Your balls are BIG
ces méthodes ne sont pas très fiable car si la valeur à changer vous ne le verrez pas et si le condensateur est en court circuit vous allez déclencher l'installation électrique donc valable à 30% ces méthodes
The first way looks the best fun but please use a quick test block or similar. These are designed to temporarily connect things to the mains. Just makes it a bit safer for you. Thank you so much for posting:)

But I have question,, if that dead dry battery acid use like they way done to use salt with water. So if you put salt with water for that dry dead Battery so you gona using only salt with water or u can put also acid in that battery?
Yeah, never use a load like a light globe, just short it and damage it further......... I wonder how many videos didn't get made because the person was injured or killed.

Whie. Explaing do not show the sentenses at the same time.At that time can not able to the operation what your dolng on the job.Separately to be explained.Thank you
Why you charge the capacitor for a fraction of a second only. Is there a problem if we keep in charging for hours?
HI, this testing is totaly wrong. Charging capacitors on AC voltage if it is 50hz it means the polarity is changed 50 times per second, u do not know when you disonect the capacitor and u can damage it. the capacitors are always charged on dc voltage u must use diode if conected on ac. Please repair the video and do not teach wrong.
Unfortunately this is just one type of digital multimeter, and the layout of all the numbers are always different.
the first method is very unprofessional and absolut risky for your life. This maybe the testing method in china, india or elsewhere in the southeast asia but dont show this bullshit on internet!
At least use a diode and a resistor for slowly charging and discharging. When you handle such capacitors you should at least have simple test gear like multimeter or multi component tester available for just a few bucks :-)
😂
WRONG!!! don't lead people to kill themselves!!!!
never to connect a cap to AC source directly. that is shortcutting!!!! except you can connect and disconnect the cap within 25ms!!!!! should charge it with DC!!!!!!!
Normally start capacitors has much higher capacitance than the one showing !…
Excellent. We can measure the capacity of 30uF using another capacitor. If we have another 30uF, we put them in series and we have 15uF. If we have one under 20uF, we measure it and we find the value = a, then we put it in series with the larger capacitor and we find the value = b, b
thank you for that sharing sir.
Please note that, while doing this, I suggest that capacitor not to be connected directly even little time, since we want check capacitor is Ok or nor, there may be open or short internal, it should be always to be connected one series lamp with this, so the test will be safe, if not incase short, it will explode with no time.
Very nice explnation
But i think 450v is running cap
Charging by dc it shoud less than second or no problem
If ihave two 110v capacitor can i connect it with 220v without problems
Thank u
Good video, thanks! One question: when you measure, and connect back capacitor, can wires be in either location: there is no "plus and minus" connector, either way capacitor works !!!??? Thanks, youtheman =)
This is a AC capacitor, so there is no positive and negative terminal
@@TechStudyCell So, you can check it, or connect it either way, right??
ruclips.net/video/YGSHcyWju9c/видео.html
@@Eeropolvasti yes, correct. There is no +/- on the capacitor

Thanks for your feedback 😊
How about polarity capacitor if there is negative and pacitive like 50 Volt ,100 uf

Please can I change the capacitor of a summersible control box with a higher one with higher microfarad?
Why it should be connected for fraction of a second ?
fok dats some fokdup shit hehehe sori
Sorry I can't understand what you're saying
Never charge a capacitor from a mains socket, as shown....... take this video down as its highly dangerous , so stupid, use a capacitance tester or get a qualified sparky to test.
Seems to me that that capacitor is run capacitor not start capacitor !…
Hi great video,i have installed the new cspacitor to my compressor, it worked for 2 days but now when i start it ,the motor doesn't run just mskes a noise as its struggling to start or its stuck ,any ideas fellow ?
THx!!!
Good👌
This is a running capacitor. Don't you know that..? there is a difference between a start capacitor and a run capacitor
That sound.. Thaught atombomb blast near me
Hello. 😊Thanks for the good explanation. I have a question. I am going to replace a capacitor on a power generator, and am wondering if a normal starting capacitor can be used for this, or if there are special capacitors for generators? ( 18uf 400 - 450 volts 5% 17-10 w ) Thanks
Good work brother
Thanks
Sir ji Aap ka vedio Hindi me nahi hai kya.
Lots of bad practices in 8 minutes.
Sir may I ask, if I have a motor starting capacitor for "Dough Mixer" of 80µF 10+20% 270V, and I have a reading of 85µF, shall I say that the capacitor is in excellent condition?
Thanks for the info. Good explanation. Keep it up.
Seen this video today...@2.13 please dont follow this method, since u r testing the capacitor. How do you know beforehand the capacitor is OK...if there is any short, you are inviting problem...charge the capacitor through a load of same voltage...

thanks for a good job. that you explain in different ways. I follow your job and look forward to more about other things i have idea but i don't know if it is appropriate to say publicly but if you want let me know
Thank you for the video.
I also have the 4 pin type, it's a cbb60 for a MacAllister COD2000FLS tablesaw.
After testing the cap, it seems to be okay, it's holding and releasing charge perfectly.
Looks like I need a new saw 🫠
Leaving the brand and model number here for owners who run into the same issue, so let's hope Google search leads them here 👍
Very dangerous. If it is charged when you put the screwdriver on the top it would spark and could cause damage or harm to you. This should only be done while wearing safety glasses
Very dangerous? Haha!! Just looking at a battery probably scares you. This is how people have been doing it for many decades without injuring themselves. There isn't enough current to cause damage to the terminals. It's OK to use something like a screwdriver with a non conductive handle.
@@jayryan7473 actually, I build my own batteries from the ground up.
I've had a few times where high amps have created molten metal explosions in a split second. The first time it happened it sent out an explosion of molten metal as it melted a screwdriver tip. If that would have got in my eye, I'd probably have been blinded.
It's the same principal behind how welding works. Not pretty.
Always wear safety specs. Always

A dangerous practice IMHO, bare wires into mains sockets, bare hands, risk of bad capacitor blowing up in your face. Small caps and low voltages yes but not what this guy is doing with a large AC motor start cap.
I have shown 4 methods of testing. Among them one method is risky but with that method, if you don't have multimeter still you can test the capacitor. I have already mentioned the precaution should be taken for that.

How to test 120 MFD Capaciter
Dude really brave wtf don't get shocked :)
do not connect a capacitor directly across supply
if the capacitor is defective then just imagine what will happen
Nice video
Good
Mujhe v sikha do😭😭
could you please explain third method (or please refer to link explaining etc...)?
how capacitor is charging without a source ?
The multimeter has a souce. Recall to measure resistance, you need v=IR, so the resistance of the capacitor increases with increase in charging and vice versa.
Abe jo kaam tha uske baare mein baat kar
I have a portable air conditioner that doesn't work. I have removed the start capacitor and tested the resistance and it's on overload no matter what ohm setting I put my multimeter on. I have tried charging it, and discharging it and it's always the same. Is it safe to assume the capacitor is dead?
Thanks for the video. How do you know if such a capacitor is actually faulty or needs to be replaced? I've got a garage door opener motor which no longer works, and I think the capacitor is dead... When I test with multimeter (3rd method) nothing happens at all on multimeter. Just stays on 0.0?
DANGER Will Robinson! DANGER!
First method is not adviseble.
Thanx
good video
Thanks
My English is weak I'm sorry for that😥
thank you for valuable knowledge
Great video, nice you shown 4 different ways. The first way looks to be the most fun.
Thanks for your feedback 😊
Does it matter which wire goes to live - neutral supply from first method 😁

Please check the insulation of the coil. And current through the coil

Just viewed your video, thanks I appreciate it.😎
I think its better you use a resistance in series
while connecting in mains and discharging
Nice video.. I need help :( I have a power washer, it was humming on start and not running, I had a larger capacitor in garage and changed it over, motor ran for a minute and blew up capacitor, it was rated over double uf.. Is it a start or run capacitor? There is only one so I assumed it was a start,.. I will send link to power washer pdf parts :) thanks if you can help
If no centrifugal switch connected in series with the capacitor then the capacitor remains connected during running period. Please always replace the capacitor having the same rating (uf must be same, voltage and temp can be higher or same) for both start and run capacitors.
nice
Third method not clear.
Very clear and simple, thank you.
Thank you

Thank you for your video. I did test the spark method. The spark was not as powerful as yours, does that matter? Can I conclude that my capacitor is good, even though the spark was not as powerful as yours?
It is always recommended to use multimeter for testing
@@TechStudyCell I don't have a reliable multimeter. I'm going to get one online

good video, thanks for info, well explained, can you please tell me how can I find out, how many uf capacitor is, if the label is not readable thanks
Sir mene 1st method se check kia pr spark sirf wire pr tha
Capcitor m koi sound nhi!?
I would NEVER use the AC mains as the FIRST test as shown in your video. If the capacitor is defective (e.g. with an internal short circuit) it could well explode, and/or cause the wires to melt and explode molten metal and other debris at high speed (into eyes, etc if one is not wearing safety glasses...which is bad protocol).
