    Very nice restoration! I hope you use a respirator when cleaning the case. I think they really use asbestos in the linen underneath the casings to keep the heat in the old days

      It´s from 1906. It´s advertised as being lined with Asbestos. The patent states it´s lined with asbestos. It is literally called the "Asbestos Iron". You "think" they were lined with asbestos? xD

      @@theexchipmunki don't "THINK" I know the manufacturer used an asbestos liner in the handles.
      Yes, Cancer causing asbestos was used as an insolation to derect and maintain the heat here it belongs.
      A respirator would be better than not using one but it's all in the way the wind blows, sometimes the wind will blow the fiber in your lungs and sometimes it doesn't. Anyway you look at it, it's exposure and any exposure to asbestos is bad. exposure..

    A very well done restoration. I think that the handle is especially cool.

    It's beautiful!!! Nice job and I don't think your wife has ever ironed with one of those. Great job!

    I think the advertisement should have read, "Make your wife happy; do your own bloomin' ironing."
    Very, very enjoyable Tom. Quite the departure in style but a nice change of pace. And such a wonderful job, a real transformation. There's something strangely uplifting about seeing a neglected item brought back to how it used to look. Excellent work, incidentally, on the interior of the cover; getting in there to sand away all that surface rust must have been a real pig. Cheers mate.

      Thanks for the feedback! My wife thanks you also. I thought I'd mix up the style a bit. Maybe if I don't show my face as often, I might get more subscribers :-)

    I really like watching these restoration videos of something nearly scrap... are you going to display the iron with a vintage ad, perhaps framed?
    And not to harp, but i really liked your old intro a lot better, is this one solely for restorations?

    • @AlleyPicked

      I haven't thought about displaying it yet. For now it sits on my desk. That was just a one off Intro. I just like to mix it up now and then. Keeps me amused :-) The original one will be back soon. Thanks for the feedback! Tom

    Great job! What is the paste you applied at 6:50 and has it kept further rusting at bay since you restored this?

      In the video, right at 6:50 a link pops up in the upper right. It's a link to the oil paste I apply. Here is that link:

    I just came across one of these irons but now I am hesitant as to cleaning it because of the asbestos issue any suggestions on how to safely clean ?

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  Год назад

      There is no asbestos in the metal. The original ones had asbestos under the handle inside the hood. I have yet to see one of these irons with this asbestos inside.

    • @theexchipmunk
      @theexchipmunk Год назад

      @@AlleyPicked Big point of caution here. Even if the pad is removed, due to the soft and less dense quality of that pad, fibres could easily flake off and spread in knooks and crannies or get caught up in rust buildup. So even if the pad is removed, there can still be asbestos on these things, but basically invisible due to how small the firbres are. And no exposure to asbestos is safe.

    Scary grinding actual asbestos?

    • @AlleyPicked
      @AlleyPicked  3 года назад

      The Iron itself is not asbestos. It was called asbestos because it had asbestos lining under the hood.
