I am around a 3 handicap. I have had this issue for a long time. Played well when my timing was good. And then not so good when the timing was not there. I worked on this for a short period of time and my first round with this back swing adjustment of feeling like I am taking outside of the ball on the backswing and I shoot a 69. 3 birdies, no bogies and every hole I was on in regulation. Been a while since I have shot in the 60s. Thanks for the help.
I’ve played decently my whole life (low-mid 80s) but my problem has always been playing it too far inside like you mentioned. I tried this drill in the driveway and it feels solid. Have you been able to retrain your back swing? Or do you just start with that wrist cock? I’m not sure I’ll be able to retrain the muscle memory so I might have to hitch early and look odd doing so
Hi Chris, been trying to lower my handicap and for reasons unknown my entire swing fell apart this week (notwithstanding spending at least 8 hours a week at the driving range the past 5 months...). I arrived at the point of almost giving up on the sport. Really appreciate the simple drill which not even my golf tutor showed me. I tried it and everything immediately fell in place again! Thanks again, I knew there was something small wrong with my take-away but just couldn't figure it out until I watched your video. I am officially a fan now and look forward to more of your tutorials.
Great tip and simple drill, this has caused me a lot of issues recently and after trying with a dummy club, does appear to fix it - will keep pushing on with the drill and a real club now, thanks Chris!
Hi Chris. Good tips. I think wrist rolling is one of those things we high-handicappers do unconsciously, thinking we're swinging correctly. This drill can help break that bad habit.
Like this concept. I've spent a year trying to change from an over top swing. Trouble is I basically aimed for a half swing which meant my shorts irons were great but not longer irons. I was told to imagine raking a wall behind me but I found the concept didn't work. Then several weeks ago I combined a few things that I'd noticed on YT. First to keeps arms straighter at start of takeaway, then keep right elbow pit pointing up, then start backswing using body turn instead of arms. I found that my right elbow came in more and kept me on plane, I also started feeling some lag and my arms speeding up further down the swing. The change was immense I started striking the ball well and added 25 yards to my distance. Last week it vanished suddenly and I have to start again. My biggest issue has always been over active arms from the top and I start to thrash the ball, so I always have to fight that trigger point. This video gives me something new to focus on in the start of the backswing as I find the initial move usually makes or breaks my swing...
thanks very much ive been play many years and im off nine for all those time and long time ive try many drills but this is work straight away please try with a driver i like to see more thanks very much
Thanks Chris. Rolling the wrists in the takeaway is my biggest issue. I've been working all winter on the feeling of trail palm down in the takeaway with more wrist hinge and it has helped. My issue right now is getting from club parallel to the ground to the top of the backswing without lifting my arms too much. Any thoughts? Great video - thanks!
Great tip! Have only played one round after watching this but hit my irons better than I have for quite some time. Will keep at this as I love the feeling of where I should be in the backswing. Thank you for the tip 😉👍
I find this easiest way to achieve this is to take the club back along a parallel line for about 3ft so the club face is still square to the ball for 3ft then coming inside on the rest of the backswing so my trail elbow is at 90 degrees. It creates a repeatable feeling and definitely works. On top of this if you play your downswing on a slight in path you get a great draw
Awesome way to look at it. I really struggled flipping inside very quickly. My biggest fix was drill/takeaway thought of pushing another ball behind my ball , directly back until the club naturally lifts. This kept my club face from flipping open too early and getting very shallow on the takeaway .
Chris I can manage to do this drill and hit the ball solid. The problem I have is translating this into a normal swing. The second I set this drill aside, I go back to rolling the wrist. I can never get myself to go back to the feel I get by hinging the wrist, and swinging up. I actually play a round of golf using this drill.
This is a great drill for people who get disconnected with their lead arm on the takeaway or roll their wrists on the takeaway, taking the club head too far inside. I saw a video with a previous drill years ago. The only difference was the previous drill had you extend your arms out in front of you, hinge your wrist and then turn. The problem with with that drill is that on the downswing you had to change your spine angle. With this drill you're actually in your true setup position and only have to turn your shoulders after you hinge your wrists. The question then comes up how do I incorporate this into a natural swing after practicing the drill. If you have only the swing thought of hinging the wrist as you turn the shoulders you will be on the right swing plane. This also keeps the left wrist flat on the takeaway. It will feel unusual and feel like the club head is way outside of the butt of the club. Stick with this drill and you will be well rewarded. This makes it much easier on the back and also helps prevent an over-the-top move. Thanks Chris for a simple drill that fixes many swing flaws.
I love all your videos and really benefited by a takeaway drill I can no longer find. I screenshotted it. Included 2 alignment sticks on ground. Can you point me in right direction please. Thanks!
Chris this is worth its weight in gold for me! Didn’t even realise this was the issue! Just knew I was laid off at the top. THANK YOU! Hope you and the family are ok, Mike H
Excellent. Don't know if it's possible but it would be good if we could have a further video to show how you can marry this drill with an actual correct takeaway with the same feels?
Hey Chris, can you give me the information for your net and mat please? I have been doing research recently and found some in Amazon. Not sure I have seen that net though. Help help
Given that our setup/address to the ball is correct, is this something that will work for any club in the bag? I’m really struggling getting the club on plane, and I think this is the true cause of my overswing (arms overrun and I cross the plane pretty badly, and early extend and flip to get back the the ball)
I like this drill. Not hit balls using it but brushing the ground. Silly question but can you play using this method on a round? Seems like it would get your swing more on plane.
Hi Chris, can you do a little clip on the difference between pitching and chipping. Ball position, weight and hand position at address and swing. Thank you
Great drill 👍, my feel is keeping my the back of my left hand or glove logo pointed at the ball for as long as possible. Very Ledbetter A swing looking.
Is it possible that the cause of taking it away too far to the inside could also be the entire body rotating to soon. Feel like I struggle with this cos i rotate the hips too early in the swing
ChrisRyanGolf just come across your channel some great videos, if you undo the net on both hoops at the bottom of your net the balls wont come back too you 👍

Chris, I'm having issues with striking all my irons and driver of the toe, I have watched so many videos that describe the correct method for eliminating this issue (standing closer to ball etc) and still can't strike the ball in the middle of club. This issue has got me to the stage where I am ready to throw in the towel, can you please help, I am a 10 handicapper and 62 years old.
How can you practice on a mat that is inches above your feet? I hate practicing on an elevated mat like that. Why don’t you dig it down to be level with your feet?

Fabulous tip, wish I could add a photo to show the instant improvement this drill made to my takeaway
I had a rolled takeaway on my last video swing analysis .. so I need this drill. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Chris. This is a different drill for what I've been working on in the takeaway. This looks a little simpler. I'll give it a try.
Thanks Jim and hope it helps
Best teacher I've watched online.
Thanks James
The way you explain things makes it easy to follow and understand, thanks!
Thanks Cody appreciate that
Awesome video. Battling this very issue at the moment.

Super helpful. Keep them coming, Chris. Much appreciated. Be safe, you and yours.

You have hit the nail right on the head with this Chris that is my take away so I will trying this drill out tomorrow for sure 👍
Thanks Andrew hope it helps 👍

Chris, you nailed this one!
first video of yours i have watched but you sir have got a new sub ! Keep up the great and easy to understand tips !

This comment really helped me out. Thanks for sharing the tip.
gonna try it, i have a strong grip and am guilty of turning my forearm resulting in consistent toe shots and a but over the top.

I liked the face on view of the drill but it seems like we only had a glimpse of it ?
Cheers
Thanks for still rolling out the videos.
And thanks for watching 👍👍

Cool drill, will give it try. Thanks for the daily content
Thanks Jody
good stuff, keep up the good work
Thanks Chris, nice drill, the fault just like my bad swings.
Another really helpful, clear vid Chris - many thanks!
Great video, Chris! Stay Safe at home and I hope we soon can go back on the real course!
Great video a lightbulb moment for me
Chris this is worth its weight in gold for me! Didn’t even realise this was the issue! Just knew I was laid off at the top. THANK YOU! Hope you and the family are ok, Mike H
Thanks Mike and glad the video had some value for you
thanks for this! I really struggle with getting the club inside too quickly leading to a very flat plane.
Great video Chris. Thank you for this. I struggle with this from time to time
Thanks Amod

Hey Chris, can you give me the information for your net and mat please? I have been doing research recently and found some in Amazon. Not sure I have seen that net though. Help help
Thx for keeping such great videos going!
Thanks Jeremy
Really good practice video
Thanks David
Mathew Wolff does this to the extreme and he pounds the ball.
Good educational video. Like it
Good vid Chris. Love the net and easy simple drill 👍🏻
Thanks Jack
Awesome tips
Can you make a video on hybrid vs FW wood. Im in need of either a FW5 18° or a hybrid 19°. Of course the Taylormade Sim. Pro and cons.
Excellent drill
Well done Chris! Where did you get your net?
Net is from Newitts but I believe they have sold out now unfortunately
Fancy selling that net Chris? Looks awesome

Great vid my issue exactly always trying to keep my hands inside the clubhead and when my game goes off this is the issue
Great explanation !!!!
Ryan Moore was swing like that on the tour at one time.
I like this drill. Not hit balls using it but brushing the ground.
Silly question but can you play using this method on a round? Seems like it would get your swing more on plane.
No reason why you couldn’t if you felt results were better
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thanks Chris - can't wait to give it a proper go.
Great video
Thanks
Awesome net! Can you provide link.
Hi Chris, can you do a little clip on the difference between pitching and chipping. Ball position, weight and hand position at address and swing. Thank you
Thanks for the suggestion and I will try to get something up on this topic 👍
Great drill 👍, my feel is keeping my the back of my left hand or glove logo pointed at the ball for as long as possible. Very Ledbetter A swing looking.
Thanks. Appreciate the advice. Makes sense.
Thanks Don
Good drill, thanks
Chris, are you familiar with ‘The Arm Swing Illusion’ by Jim Waldron? If yes, what is your opinion about it?
Is it possible that the cause of taking it away too far to the inside could also be the entire body rotating to soon. Feel like I struggle with this cos i rotate the hips too early in the swing
Great drill!!!
Would this drill work for a driver , 3 wood, or 3 hybrid? I suspect not for a driver but I'm not sure why.
Yeah would apply to all clubs, a little more tricky to perform this drill with long clubs, but theory still applies 👍
So are you suggesting a much earlier wrist hinge when actually playing?
Do you think it'd be OK to do this during a round while hitting real shots? Or would this not be advised?
Put a bedspread or bedsheet behind the net Chris. That should absorb some of the energy and slow down the ball returning so quickly
Yeah need to do that just haven’t got round to it yet
ChrisRyanGolf just come across your channel some great videos, if you undo the net on both hoops at the bottom of your net the balls wont come back too you 👍
Hi Chris, are you available for remote Coaching sessions? Would love to know.
Hi Mario, yes I do offer this, drop me an email at chris@chrisryangolf.com and I can help
Could an inside takeaway or under plane takeaway be the reason for coming from too much from the inside and chunking it?
Hey Chris, can you give me the information for your net and mat please? I have been doing research recently and found some in Amazon. Not sure I have seen that net though. Help help
Can you post a link for the practice net please
Where did you get your matt from?

How can you practice on a mat that is inches above your feet? I hate practicing on an elevated mat like that. Why don’t you dig it down to be level with your feet?
Reminds me of a Matt Kutcher back swing.
Yeah similar type of move with Kuchar 👍
Yo what net is this?
Are you hinging you’re wrists vertically at address or during the initial part of the takeaway when taking a full swing?
On the course it would happen during the takeaway, in this drill I would do it at set up 👍
what kind of net is that?
What size net is that?
Handle video..Chris. ..get your back and full shoulder turn
I don’t really roll over the club but I take my arms inside. The club face stays square to target. Difficult habit:)
What brand of net is that????
It’s a Quickplay Meganet 👍
Looks like Matt Wolff’s backswing!
Yes very similar moves 👍
What is bad about an inside takeaway?
My downswing is nice and shallow, and I find that when my backswing is too steep I have trouble getting back on plane.
I’m just wondering what types of
... problems can occur due to an inside takeaways.
Thanks for the videos, great stuff!
