What do you think about laser cataract surgery? Do you need cataract surgery?

I'm 52. They said I have a cataract in my left eye and a small one in the right. The only reason they gave me was sun exposure as I didn't need glasses until 44. I'm terrified. I was told I wouldn't need glasses after. Is this true?

Had cataract surgery in both eyes extremely painful. Still have floaters. Had to have an additional surgery to fix it two weeks later. Worst experience ever. Had it with a good dr expensive and can’t see as well as I used to especially at night. Still have floaters that make me think I’m seeing bugs in one eye, really annoying. Have nothing good to say about cataract surgery.

This was the first time I've seen a video where a relative gets the surgery. Following your mother's experience was an excellent approach to explaining laser cataract surgery. After all, this wasn't just a patient--it was your mother! It certainly makes me feel better about my upcoming surgery. Thanks!

I'm 43 years old and in October 2022 I was diagnose with severe cataracts. I just had laser surgery on both eyes- my right eye was done first and three weeks later the left one. I didn't have an IV though. The entire operation lasted 20 minutes and I didn't have to wear a patch afterwords.

I had laser cataract surgery nearly two years ago. My doctor recommended the premium lens for one eye but said I would be OK with the standard lens for the other that Medicare would pay for. The premium lens cost me $1,200 but it corrects things the other one won't. In hindsight, I would pay for both to be the premium lens only because I get some blur off the edge of the standard one. I guess you get what you pay for. Since that surgery, my cataracts grew back in both eyes. I think they are call "yags?" I had no idea cataracts could regrow and so quickly. The treatment is simple and easy. Takes just minutes to perform and you can drive yourself home. Problem with mine is that my vision is not nearly as good as it was after the original cataract surgery.
I would be interest for you to do a video on Nevis growths inside the eye. I have one that has been monitored now for over 8 years and it is a real chore to go in every year and have it ultrasound and photographed. Not comfortable at all. Perhaps if I understood it better, I might feel differently about having to go in for this exam every year. They would actually like to do it more often but I refuse to go.

I had cataract surgery about three years ago, but must have been put to sleep as I recall nothing until waking outside the OR. Shortly after surgery, maybe 3-4 weeks, my vision went from perfect to worse vision than prior to surgery. I had to undergo an additional procedure. Since the surgery I have had to wear contacts which have been changed every few months as vision has changed drastically. (Do recall exactly but slowly from -25 (?) to +250(?) maybe the other way. In the last month I went from -50 to -25. My doctor has admitted that this is very much out of the ordinary but it does scare me as I am blind in my other eye. Oh also developed a torn cornea since surgery.

At 64, I was already seeing halos when driving at night, and some yellowish fuzziness. I also have astigmatism, abnormal saccades, and recurrent corneal erosion. I saw the eye doctor last June, and he said I would need cataract surgery in 6 months. I’m hoping to wait until Spring. Would love to know what you think of using toric lenses.

Great video ! May I ask how do you manage patients with (moderate) ADHD during cataract surgery with toric lens implant ? Does IV sedation work well or is general anesthesia required ? I'm afraid of moving or not understanding the instructions in time (as often happens to me). However, the idea of being under general anesthesia makes me even more anxious...

If you were near sighted like me, be prepared to need cheater glasses for the rest of your life. I am now 20/20 in both eyes after the surgeries and have cheaters in every room in the house. Eventually I will resume wearing glasses all the time again, just for reading now.
