  • Hey there DCS brothers & sisters.
    This vid showing how I liaise with my JTAC units who are providing me with MGRS coordinates ( Military Grid Reference System ) thus allowing me to easily create Waypoints from those coords to locate enemy Targets in my latest mission "Search Seek & Destroy".
    Hope you find it helpful, cheers Gaz 😉
    My latest mission in both day & night versions relative to this vid.. go grab em & have fun 🙂

    This video needs to be shorter unless the guide is also about how to do radio menu comms with JTAC. Essentially the good stuff starts at 7:16 -- which is "how to enter MGRS coordinates for F/A-18 waypoints."
    Slightly extra material that would be helpful is this: understanding MGRS coordinates in general. MGRS coordinates are not all the same. After the letters in MGRS, there are 6, 8, or 10 numerical digits -- always an even number of digits. Essentially divide that number in half, so 6 is XXXYYY, 8 is XXXXYYYY, and 10 is XXXXXYYYYY. It looks like your JTAC gave 6 digits in the 9-line and it looks like the F/A-18 takes in exactly 6 digits so that's a direct input situation. But what if the JTAC gave you 8 digits or 10? I play on a multiplayer server (Through The Inferno) and MGRS coordinates through server comms (F10) features are given as 10 digits. The conversion is simple -- remove the same number of trailing digits per X partition and Y partition. Example:
    Say you're given 36RWU1234567891. You have 10 digits at the end, 5 X digits and 5 Y digits. First it helps to parse it out to 36R WU 12345 67891 -- now we can see the XXXXX part is 12345, and the YYYYY part is 67891.
    If your DCS module (F/A-18) is only expecting 6 trailing numerical digits instead of 10, you need to drop the 2 least significant digits from each part. 12345 for XXXXX becomes 123 as XXX, and 67891 for YYYYY becomes 678 for YYY. The entire thing becomes 36R WU 123 678. The removed digits is giving you less precise coordinates within the grid, but should still get you looking at the right area. I'm actually surprised only 3 digits of precision put the targetting pod right on target in this video.
    I'm not 100% sure on this, but in the opposite direction (you need more digits than given), I'm guessing you just pad with zeroes. So if you get only 6 digits, and you need to input 8 (the AH-64D needs 8), add zeros to the trail. So 36R WU 123 789 goes to 36R WU 1230 7890.
    I got what I came here to learn, but had to fill in some gaps.

      Thanks Michel_OK much appreciated. At the annoyance of most hard core simmers in DCS hehe.. I enjoy external views. That view you saw is simply F7 = "Ground unit view" & then I use "Zoom in slow" & "Zoom out slow" function, all of which I have mapped to controls on my throttle & stick. There are lots of different external views you can map to your controls, one of my favorites is to "Released weapon view" = F6 then I hit "Jump to free camera view" = L Ctrl + F6. It looks awesome & when your in your Pit you can use it too. That one I use a fair bit.. check my latest vid Operation Blackout & just before I takeoff at 07:30 I use it then. Again, all mapped to my throttle n stick. Have a look in DCS Options Controls all around F2 F3 F4 etc. Hope all that helped. Cheers 🙂👍

    Hmm why does jtac give me random mgrs data? If he gives the mgrs. input in as you do, and then is is an random spot middle of the desert or in the ocean and then he says it is infantry target? What is going on

    • @GazAce
      @GazAce  Год назад

      I'm not sure I fully understand your question brother. Firstly, JTAC Patrol here in a DCS mission can physically ID a Target for you as they are within visual range of that target. They then give the Pilot the Grid Coordinates for the enemy's location so the Pilot can convert them to a WP which he can then target. I'm not sure where the "random" part comes into it. Check this little vid I did not long ago on building a small bridge bombing mission & also setting down a JTAC Unit that IDs a Target for you. As well as a vid on easy log 8 digit coordinates.
      Hope that helps. Cheers GA 🙂👍
