"All of this for 89 pounds 99, you cannot go wrong" made me laugh because you seemed like a QVC seller lol I need a book recommendation video with that same energy
The Pokémon Adventures manga isn't actually based off the anime at all - different characters, much different events, and a darker tone especially for a "kid's" manga. I read through it a couple years ago for the first time, and as a lifelong Pokémon fan, I found a LOT to love. Definitely one of my favorite pieces of Pokémon-related media, such a pleasant surprise to discover it for the first time as an adult.
I think it would be really fun if you did a Shoujo manga tournament! And include Yona of the Dawn! It's a fantasy, adventure, coming of age story with a bit of romance sprinkled in. It's amazing! It's got an adventure vibe similar to One Piece! 🏴☠️
@@Moody.Smiruai Highly recommend you read it. The reverse harem isn't about them all being in love with Yona, they all have unique relationships with her. Yes, some of them love her but they aren't pushy with it and it's lovely to watch their friendships form! Also highly recommend Snow White with the Red Hair. Very similar to Yona but it isn't a reverse harem and is a beautiful read :)
The good thing is manga are quicker to go through than books. Definitely take your time to check out all the series. In the end only you can find out what you enjoy most and others can only suggest. Manga are as divers as any other literature and I think generally most manga that got released especially in the 90s and 2000s were quite good or they wouldn't have been translated. There's a manga for every mood. Edit :a lot of these have anime too... If you don't like the manga you could still really love the anime or the other way around
AHHH so happy to see the return of Monster! The anime was recently added to Netflix for me so I’m glad I get to watch it after finishing the manga. I never thought I’d be back in my manga phase but here we are. I picked up alice in borderland because of the show.
I will not stop recommending D.Gray-man and Pandora Hearts because they are so goddamn underrated!! Anyways, welcome to your Manga era, Gavin. Enjoy the ride ;)
Yay! So happy you got the first volume of Fruits Basket, it really is such a good read. And you pronounced Tohru’s name correct. It’s a completed series, so enjoy it!
i would recommend dr stone , short summary - the world gets turned to stone and our main character senku (who is a genius) wakes up and has to try and restore humanity and reinvent everything in a primitive stone world - its so wholesome and makes you feel great about humanity and what we have accomplished ( which we need with all the horrible things)
Haikyu is so good! My favorite of the ones you bought. Spy X Family, Monster and Hunter x Hunter are other favorites (and Berserk of course). Sailor Moon is an all time classic, definitely worth checking.
Watching your excited manga haul makes me so happy and nostalgic. One of my manga GOATs is Black Butler. I’m sure it’s one you would love Gavin! Victorian London setting, mysteries, demons and of course… Sebastian 🖤 Would love to see you read it one day if you have time!
I will once again recommend Bakuman. From the creators of Death Note, it follows two young men (middle school students at the start of the story) who want to be manga-ka, and their journey/career in the manga publishing world. The characterization is brilliant, but so is the authentic inside look at the industry, from idea inception to rough storyboarding to editing to publishing to fan reaction. It's criminally underrated and my life's goal is to get a booktuber or mangatuber to talk about it so everyone will see how amazing it is.
I love your manga videos! I recently got really into them and there's not many channels that I watch regularly that talk about them. There's so many I need from this video! Can't wait to see your opinion on them all
Some of my favourite manga that I would recommend are: for shonen: Magi (from Shinobu Ohtaka), D. Gray-man for shojo: Yona of the Dawn, Ouran High School Host Club(has a box set), Skip Beat, the webtoon: Solo Leveling the historical, romance, slice-of-life manga: Young Bride's Story the detective manga: Case Closed/ Detective Conan Hopefully you will like some of them:)
I'd like to again submit "Golden Kamuy" to your long list of recommendations. Golden Kamuy is also about finding a stash of hidden gold, but it's a historical fiction set in mid-1900s Japan/Siberia. Really unique premise, and I promise you will not regret giving it a shot!
@@Moody.Smiruai Gintama is fucking amazing, but imo it's a little different from GK or OP. With Gintama it feels like an arc is either a "gag arc" or a "serious arc". It doesn't seem like there is as much blending of comedy and seriousness, and more like it switches between them, if that makes sense
Gavin the passion you have for manga really shines through just like it does for your middle grade. I've been watching for ages but now it's me and my son watching as he loves manga. I'm definitely getting into it more. Keep doing what you do your passion is infectious.
Yes, we love a manga era!! A lot of the ones you mentioned are fantastic. Other good ones are Rurouni Kenshin and Prince of Tennis if you like sports manga. So excited to see what you think of the ones you hauled!
Excited for you to start Bleach (absolute favorite Shonen). I also recommend Hellsing which you can get in the same style as the Berserk Deluxe edition and there's only 3 deluxe/10 volumes.
When you said haul , I didnt expect you to pick SOOOO many good ones. Theres literally only a few here I haven't heard of (some like fruits basket , I watched the anime of) but the ones I know are all pretty solid!
Man, seeing all of the manga you accumulated really brought back memories from high school. My favorites were Bleach and Fullmetal Alchemist. My other favorites were Yu-Gi-Oh!, D. Gray-Man, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Black Butler, and Attack on Titan. Get ready for the emotional roller coaster in Assassination Classroom.
I don't recall if anyone has recommended it to you/you've mentioned it in a video before but I highly recommend you check out The Girl From the Other Side. It's beautiful!
I second this! The story is a bit vague so I don't know that everyone goes for that, but it's 100% worth the price of admission for the art alone. The atmosphere is 😚👌
I'm doing a reread of berserk right now! When i first read it it immediately became my favourite series (next to one piece) and somehow upon rereading it i love it even more? It is dark and grim, but at the same time i find it comforting, cozy and hopeful. Can't wait to see you read and experience it, it truly is a masterpiece
Good to see you in your manga era ! It’s always nice to see people getting into series for the first time ^-^ some recommendations for you that I have are; I Hear the Sunspot, Fangs, DekoBoko Sugar Days, and Kageki Shoujo ! Have fun reading :D
I've just come across your channel by having your book review video of The Vampire Diaries recommended to me! I was literally thinking while watching "I bet you would love manga." So happy to see you do! I highly recommend Yona of the Dawn and Snow White with Red Hair! They are my ALL TIME favourites and I would love to hear your review of them! :)
I've never been a manga reader but I decided to try one out when I was feeling slumpy. It was Spy x Family and I loved it, binged all volumes in a couple of days and I keep up with new chapter releases on Manga Plus. When I was done I ventured into the world of fanfics for this manga on AO3. It's just such a funny and wholesome comfort read to me at this point and I'm so glad I discovered it
It's so great to see you going all in on your new obsession! I think you'll find the best part about getting into manga is finding all the people who've already been there for years and can recommend you everything good that came out. For me I always tell people to read Inuyasha, because it's the icon of its genre. Fantasy and ancient Japan, hell yeah. Nextly is Case Closed. You like murder mysteries don't you? Well that's what the entire series is about! Two solid series in their genres, a bit of a product of their times but not ruined by it. You're welcome~
Wow! That's an incredible haul! Lots of shounen too :O. Glad to see monster, berserk, hxh, parasyte, pun pun , spy x family, tokyo ghoul, witch hat and blood on the tracks there.
It's going to be fun watching your manga era. I'm reading Berserk right now. I'm on the 5th deluxe edition. Ass Class is a series that's very near and dear to my heart. I read it at the height of the COVID lockdown and it was the kind of series that I read when I needed it. I picked up some Pokemon stuff too recently. Before they released the manga, the Pokemon Adentures story was released as single issue comics. That's what I actually read as a kid, and I found some issues at a secondhand bookstore recently, so I picked them up. Such a good time. Hope you enjoy your manga!
here’s my contribution to Gavin’s long list of manga recs!!!! Mob psycho 100- one of my favorite animes ever the action art and characters are impeccable Dress-up Darling- sexy romance about a cosplayer and her tailor= true love happy reading gavin 💐💐💐!! welcome to manga madness
one thing i should mention big 3 in manga does not mean the best it just means its the most popular in terms of sales its like saying marvel avengers is the best movie because it made the most money, the are many many series out there that are far better written more critically aclaimed than big 3, in general the most critically aclaimed in most review website is 1 berserk(generally regarded by majority as the best manga ever written) 2 Steel ball run(7th part of jojo as the best part) 3 one piece(King of shounen best out of big 3) 4 vegabond 5 pun pun 6 vinland saga 7 monster any many more so dont get dissapointed if certain series dont work for you regardless of their ratings there are always something for everyone
I love reading horror, dark, and psychological mangas and my fav atm are Gantz, No longer human, psycho-pass, a boys abyss, and dead tube. The genre is not really a lot of people are into but I recommend it if you want to explore.
I am little sad that Assassination classroom didn't rank high in the tournament but I hope you read it someday. Story may feel slow sometimes but the manga mostly focuses on character growth of each student and teachers which is really great. Also,it is one of few manga which has really excellent ending.
Also do check out slam dunk. Its a basketball sport manga and highest selling sports manga of all time. It is extremely good and considered the best sports manga along with Hajime no Ippo and Haikyuu. It also has some insane artwork. Its author have wrote manga like Vagabond and Real which are really good. Vagabond is often considered as good as Berserk.
Thank you for giving me an outlet for my urge to buy more books/manga, which I can't really do right now since I want to move abroad and don't wanna move even more crap with me. Can't wait for more reviews of all of these!! 😊
You’re thinking of the big 3. They’re called that because when Dragon Ball ended (1996 I think) Shonen Jump had no big titles to support their magazine, until Bleach, Naruto and One Piece started. Those are the big three for that reason. A lot of people think it’s because they’re the best or whatever but it’s not that. They just were the most popular
Blood on the Tracks is definitely something you read when you’re in the mood to get traumatized. Beautiful art, thought. I’ve not read Good Night PunPun, but I’ve heard that series falls under a similar mood.
I love Fruits basket! It is complete, there are 12 collectors editions and then a follow up series called Fruits Basket Another which is complete at 4 volumes. . I've just finished collecting th e 3 in 1 editions of Fullmetal Alchemist and can't wait to read it. I'm in the middle of collecting the 3 in 1 editions of Bleach and Naruto though I read Bleach years ago on the shonen jump app. I've also just finished reading Black Torch, it's only 5 volumes and the art style reminds me So much of Bleach so you might like that too. I've always wondered what Dead man Wonderland was about, it sounds so good! Happy Reading!
Just a heads up Bleach is not a top 3 manga it’s a part of the “big 3” which is a marketing term that was used when Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece were running around the same time
if you're interested in seeing some classic series I'd definitely suggest Dragonball and Maison Ikkoku, Dragonball basically inspired and influenced pretty much every major shonen that came after it, in terms of story, structure, tropes and art, like there's a clear separation in manga art from before Dragonballs influence and after it, it's a must read, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and my hero academia's creators have all directly sourced it as one of their major inspirations, you'll definitely see a ton of where One Piece's inspiration came from especially. Maison Ikkoku is a slightly more mature sort of romcom from the 80s by Rumiko Takahashi (she's a pretty big manga creator who's wrote a lot since the 70s, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Rin-ne, Mao), it's actually getting a ton of love recently from the manga community because of a new reprint of the series, I don't want to spoil the plot of it, but it feels like one of the more real romances in manga honestly.
Barely even a minute in and I'm already LIVING for that huge stack of Berserk volumes! I read the Golden Age Arc as a teen as a teen and LOVED IT--I'm planning on getting back into it this year!
I was NOT expecting to see Madk pop up ! 🙈 You have to film your reaction as you read it. haha. Maybe you should do a "Month of Manga" to read all these first volumes and figure out which you want to continue with ?
OH MY GOSH FRUITS BASKET!!! That was my first manga,, a friend let me borrow the series when I was in elementary school and then I forgot about it for years. When I started reading one piece (which sparked a manga addiction,, help it’s such a slippery slope) it sparked the memory of reading it and I hunted down the original volumes on eBay(they don’t print them anymore,, so they can be difficult to find) Took me about six months to get all the books for a reasonable price!! Such a wonderful series,, I can’t wait for you to read it!! Also haikyuu is a wonderful and heartwarming series,, I’ve only watched the anime but I would watch it before my bike races to hype myself up lol!! I won’t spoil anything of course but there’s also a nod towards one piece in the haikyuu manga:)
Also I know this isn’t exactly reading,, but in the realm of manga/anime do you think you would ever do a video of Studio Ghibli movie reviews? Maybe have a movie marathon or something lol!!
I'm looking forward to more reviews on your manga journey! Haven't read a lot of your selection, so I may pick some up. Already looked into Berserk and Monster.
It’s great seeing more booktubers get into manga. Just some pronunciation advice. In Japanese ai is pronounced like the English letter I and if ts is at the start of the word (example: tsubaki) than the t is silent, but if the ts is in the middle of the word (example: Matsui) than the t is not silent. Also the letter i in Japanese is pronounced like the English letter e.
For Pokemon: It was first a Video Game (First generation was Red, Blue, Yellow if you're American, but Red and Green first if japanese then Green got rebooted to Blue when it came to the US), then a Trading card Game (I was introduced to it through the TCG first before I got into the Gameboy game), Then Anime, and the Manga was written as a seprate direction from the Anime as they put in more stuff and references from the games. But they came out at the same time I believe. It doesn't follow the typical order of most series. Also, the Video games don't really have a "story" until you get to Generation... 3? I think? (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald). First Generation didn't follow a direct story, same with Generation 2. 3 had the more "formulatic" story where you can follow sorta, and then Generation 5 (Black and White) was when you really get the heavier stories to follow and where the rest of the generations follow along. Just a bit of a clarification so you won't be extreamly confused if you decide to play the games after reading the Manga.
Delicious in dungeon is absolutely fabulous fantasy with dungeons and Dragons vibes, and the author clearly put a lot of thought into how dungeons work as an ecosystem!
I highly recommend Battle Angel Alita! The film got me interested, and the manga is even better, about a girl cyborg discovered in a trash heap below the sky city of Zalem. If you get the Deluxe Editions, the original series is five large volumes. So good!
I really recommend you complete goodnight punpun it's only 7 volumes and it's a complete story I cried so much like so much it's one of mine and alot of people's favourites of all time
So exciting to see you start your more broad manga journey! I'm excited to hear your thoughts on each of these series. I think you've got a wonderfully wide range of series so sure you'll find some new favorites. Surprised to not see it here but a popular adventure series if you enjoy hunter x Hunter and one piece would be Vinland Saga. It's a seinen similar to Berserk and Monster which means it's content is aimed at older male audiences so it has a more Sombre tone at points but definitely another strong series and an amazing one to collect! Wanted to also mention that for FMA there's a new hardback version of the manga which are so aestheticially pleasing so you may prefer to try and pick those volumes up if that matters to you!
I have the new Sailor Moon collection as well! I don't think they are bind ups as far as I am aware, just a re-release. Also I do think the Pokemon mangas follow the story of the games but not sure what came first
Some of my favorite manga series are sadly out of print: From Eroica with Love, Mars, Vision of Escaflowne, Angel Sanctuary, Rozen Maiden, and Love Hina
Not finished the video yet, so I might comment again (probably not though). But I just wanted to say that 'Burn the Witch' does take place in the same universe as 'Bleach' but it's the Western idea of the location the Soul Reapers come from so it might be worth it to get into 'Bleach' and read at least that box set before you read 'Burn the Witch'. Then again I haven't yet read 'Burn the Witch' yet so I'm not sure if that's explained in the first volume (and I'm actually giving mild spoilers to you) or not and if it /can/ stand on it own with zero references to 'Bleach'.
A manga shop recently opened in my city and I'm really excited to get more into manga by visiting the shop! The only series I currently keep up with is Spy x Family & World Trigger
My top 5 of those you have: 1- One Piece 2- Berserk 3- Monster 4- Full Metal Alchemist 5- Death Note & Tokyo Ghoul (tied) All of those are in a masterclass of their own.
There are so many good ones you bought!! Just a tip for some of the manga to anime, do research cause sometimes anime is not as good as manga. But for Fruits Basket, the anime is complete with the 2019 version and a movie too, that way you know how it ends cause the manga is pricey. For Sailor Moon, I would check out the anime version, Sailor Moon Crystal, it follows the manga, not like the 90s version, even though it’s good too but they made a lot of changes. Cause Sailor Moon should be completely done here soon with the movies coming out this year. 💖 love you Gavin!
I'd recommend 'Moriarty the Patriot'! It's pretty much Sherlock Holmes but you follow William Moriarty instead (with some queer undertones as well and a bunch of interesting characters)
First I adore your One Piece shirt!😍 I think you'll have a blast with all of these manga, there are so many good ones. And omg yes! I also forgot about Highschool of the Dead I really liked the anime too. And so jealous you already have volume 101 of One Piece! I still need to wait for mine.
I havent read the Banana Fish manga yet I'm currently collecting it but I've seen the anime and it's one of my favourites, it absolutely killed me! Happy reading :)

one thing i should mention big 3 in manga does not mean the best it just means its the most popular in terms of sales its like saying marvel avengers is the best movie because it made the most money, the are many many series out there that are far better written more critically aclaimed than big 3,
in general the most critically aclaimed in most review website is
1 berserk(generally regarded by majority as the best manga ever written)
2 Steel ball run(7th part of jojo as the best part)
3 one piece(King of shounen best out of big 3)
4 vegabond
5 pun pun
6 vinland saga
7 monster
any many more
so dont get dissapointed if certain series dont work for you regardless of their ratings there are always something for everyone
Amazing haul I wouldn’t even know where to start, fruits basket is very comfort and wholesome read for me ☺️
I love reading horror, dark, and psychological mangas and my fav atm are Gantz, No longer human, psycho-pass, a boys abyss, and dead tube. The genre is not really a lot of people are into but I recommend it if you want to explore.
I'm loving the manga era! ❤
This video brought me so much joy. Love manga
so happy you picked up Fruits Basket!
Thank you for giving me an outlet for my urge to buy more books/manga, which I can't really do right now since I want to move abroad and don't wanna move even more crap with me. Can't wait for more reviews of all of these!! 😊
Your enthusiasm for manga reminds me of when I was 15 and first getting into it, it’s so exciting isn’t it?
I LOVE blood on the tracks, you’ll have a great time, it’s an amazing triller
I would also recommend “Something’s Wrong With Us”! It’s so good!
I'm SO EXCITED that you're reading Tokyo Ghoul. Its one of my top 3 favorite mangas and animes ever
oh wow thats a huge haul but massively motivating to get also back into Manga.
I like that you’ve gotten some shoujo manga too!
This makes me so happy to watch ❤
Just a heads up Bleach is not a top 3 manga it’s a part of the “big 3” which is a marketing term that was used when Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece were running around the same time
Sweat and soap is a great manga about a relationship, the joys and worries that come with that. It's great!
Also, monster asap!
if you're interested in seeing some classic series I'd definitely suggest Dragonball and Maison Ikkoku, Dragonball basically inspired and influenced pretty much every major shonen that came after it, in terms of story, structure, tropes and art, like there's a clear separation in manga art from before Dragonballs influence and after it, it's a must read, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and my hero academia's creators have all directly sourced it as one of their major inspirations, you'll definitely see a ton of where One Piece's inspiration came from especially.
GTA Vice City and The Sims 2 was life when I was 12 omg
adding Birds of Shangrila to my TBR asap
I loved all of Blue Flag,, all time fav for me!
Death note volumes 1-7 is a MASTERPIECE.... all the rest of the volumes, however, should be burned alive
I LOVE HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD LMAO it's such fun trash. The anime SLAPS
I was NOT expecting to see Madk pop up ! 🙈 You have to film your reaction as you read it. haha. Maybe you should do a "Month of Manga" to read all these first volumes and figure out which you want to continue with ?
I do not read manga but I've been loving watching your manga videos and seeing you experiencing and loving them!
I actually went to look for Monster today and could only find volume 8!!! I bought Doubt volumes 1 & 2 and vol 1 of Delicious Dungeon.
I love how this is manga / book channel now 😍
This brings me joy! Live that manga moment!
Banana Fish is very very good!, i definitely reccomend
Heads up, Big three ≠ Top 3
The big three was a fan made name for the big SHOUNEN series’ anime that were very popular in the mid 2000s
So excited you have Fruits Basket! It's one of my all time favorites. I would recommend Rurouni Kenshin, Alice in Borderland, and Hellbound.
monster is SO good.. binged them all, haha. still slowly getting through OP right now 🤩
For Pokemon: It was first a Video Game (First generation was Red, Blue, Yellow if you're American, but Red and Green first if japanese then Green got rebooted to Blue when it came to the US), then a Trading card Game (I was introduced to it through the TCG first before I got into the Gameboy game), Then Anime, and the Manga was written as a seprate direction from the Anime as they put in more stuff and references from the games.
So good!
you've gotta jump in at the DEEP end when it comes to manga!
I really recommend you complete goodnight punpun it's only 7 volumes and it's a complete story I cried so much like so much it's one of mine and alot of people's favourites of all time
I missed Kingdom Hearts growing up so when I saw the manga on one of your videos I started reading them!
You might enjoy skullface book seller Honda-San considering your previous book selling job. It’s such a cute series and it’s only 4 volumes :)
I have the new Sailor Moon collection as well! I don't think they are bind ups as far as I am aware, just a re-release. Also I do think the Pokemon mangas follow the story of the games but not sure what came first
That monster summary reminds me of royal pains on USA network lol
That was literally the first episode of the show
Some of my favorite manga series are sadly out of print: From Eroica with Love, Mars, Vision of Escaflowne, Angel Sanctuary, Rozen Maiden, and Love Hina
My top 5 of those you have:
1- One Piece
2- Berserk
3- Monster
4- Full Metal Alchemist
5- Death Note & Tokyo Ghoul (tied)
All of those are in a masterclass of their own.
GAVIN
you go too hard! oh my gosh, you're too powerful STOP
incredible haul, for sure
First I adore your One Piece shirt!😍
I think you'll have a blast with all of these manga, there are so many good ones.
