In addition to annual costs, we cover the cost per hour and cost per mile to operate. We also cover key performance stats so you know what you're paying for.
Costs of airplane ownership vary widely from owner to owner. This video takes an average of the various expenses from existing owners and boils them down to simple to digest numbers. Your ownership experiences will be unique. Авто/Мото
The context and humor turned up to 11, and the audio clips of the engine noise were just "chef's kiss" 👌
As someone who owned a Pressurized Skymaster for many years I wanted to clear up some possible misconceptions one may have from watching this video. A Pressurized Skymaster uses the same engines (not exact part number but same turbocharged HP tsio -360) as a newer vintage Piper Seneca. The Skymaster has better performance than the Seneca in every category, except useful load, which is the same as the Seneca. As opposed to the 160 knots cruise quoted in the video, a P-337 will cruise as fast as 205 knots at max cruise power, even faster if equipped with aftermarket intercoolers. Climb rate on both engines is similar to the Seneca but single engine climb and ceiling are significantly better on the Skymaster (due to the centerline thrust).
The Seneca cabin is definitely bigger but you cannot fill the Seneca with passengers and still have enough range to go anywhere. It is virtually impossible to load a Skymaster out of CG limits, whereas most twins have to be careful about loading.
I think the biggest issue with maintenance on Skymaster is that you can buy one cheaply but maintenance is the same as any other 6 cylinder twin, so a lot of people buy one and then don’t properly maintain it. A P-337 has 2, 6 cylinder engines, turbochargers, a pressurized cabin, retractable gear, even deicing systems, etc, no these are the same systems as used on any other pressurized piston twin, so they cost just as much to maintain. Think of it like buying a 2000 BMW 740il. You can pick one up for a few thousand dollars but maintenance is the same as it would be on a new $100,000 BMW.
Like all piston aircraft, the Skymaster is noisy but, not more so than a twin with engines on the wing. There is however, more vibration in the cabin of the Skymaster than on other twins.
Thanks for your reply. I'm considering buying a P337 so it's nice to see your remarks about it.
I just bought a 75 T337G 2 months ago....I love it
Have you considered doing videos on your 337 ownership experience?
Very nice and congrats! Is that a pressurized cabin? Would love to see a vid on that
Good review and love the humor. As an owner and pilot of a Skymaster, the vibration level people speak of is not noticeable. I have Noise canceling headsets and it is very comfortable to fly with regards to noise; no fatigue. It is a solid and stable aircraft to fly, great short field performance and I even operate it on and off grass airfields. The alternator and mags on the rear engine are a little tight, but most maintenance is pretty much the same as a Cessna High performance single.
The illustration of the clothesline on a 337 deserves to be on a tshirt!
This ^
I was fortunate to fly one way back, late 70s, naturally aspirated. As I recall...very stable, not all that fast, on takeoff lead with the rear throttle to be sure rear mill is running, etc.. And dont forget, the military used them for quite some time!! I may be slightly wrong but I dont think they had an inflight breakup. Great videos!!!
I flew in a Riley Skyrocket, valued at 500k. I couldn’t think of a single way to upgrade the plane, including avionics. The owner was long time airforce.
@lee161 I don’t think it was super. All I remember is it was pressurized, and therefore turbocharged.
@lee161 that "super skyrocket" is bad ass!!! 2 TIO520-NBs 300 + hp a pop. That is how it should've been built from day one. Could've also used IO520s on the NA version.
@@gregbuck701 hopefully someone will finally finish the gross weight increase so you don't have to break the law everytime you want to fly with someone else
The booms may not be sonic, but at least you get TWO of them!
I like the sound of the Skymaster. Just such a cool airplane.
I own a Cessna O-2A the military version of the 337 Skymaster. Beautiful and rare.
I've seen video of them being used as spotter planes by the US military (Army)??
Mine was a FAC plane in the Air Force during Vietnam. She’s got the patched bullet holes to prove her combat history. I purchased the plane 2 years ago and am in the process of restoring her. She hasn’t flown since 1978 when the Air Force delivered her to the boneyards. Unfortunately Covid slowed the progress and dried up the funds. So sadly she sits and waits till I can get back to work on her.
Good video. Luckily enough my annual expences are much lower. Hangaring 1700€/ year, insurance 2600€ / year , annual around 4000€ .
This is one of the only twins that's a decent bush plane if I'm remembering right. That's a cool and unique ability in my book.
I have flown off of 1000 ft grass strips many times
Great video, thanks for the early showing. Happy to be a member!
What a coincidence, I just saw one of these at my airfield the other day. It was a Vietnam era one that was all original and unchanged. Weapon mounts still functional and all. Such a cool machine, even cooler to see it fly.
" Bat - 21 "
"I'd expect a steak dinner with that."
I was going with high-end electronics, but you do you.
You have to have a real sense of humor when you own a Skymaster. Every time you pull up to the ramp someone's going to say " Huff and Puff, Suck and Blow, push me pull me, and a host of others with sometimes obscenities about your airplane!!!
I've owned a fixed gear 336, several standard 337s, the turbo and pressurized models along with highly modified one with three bladed props and IO550s, much quieter.
And flew an O2 military w/full smoke at over 100 air shows.
The planes always brought me home and I've done a lot of over the water ocean flying. If you lose an engine it slows down about 10 or 15 kts/ you feather the bad engine open up the C/flaps on the good one and fly home.

Thanks for sharing your experience 👍🏻
Fell in love with this plane after watching Bat-21. Always dreamed of owning a PBY, T-38 or an O-2
like that movie very much. Lots of 337 sound.
Your videos are getting better and better. 🥰
Man the extra details are so good!! Love the style, keep em comin!
This video made my day. I remember requesting a video on this airplane a couple months ago. Definitely a underdog beaut. Thank you!!! Every video you upload gets better and better.
Wow, talk about timing. Always been a favorite of mine. You are right, very unique sound. While visiting the Statue of Liberty a couple days ago, I heard one coming. He orbited twice & headed south. Rare treat.
Love these videos. My dose of “someday”
1:33: A Cougar sighting! But no mention.. haha. Great video
Speaking of unique twins, maybe a video on the Velocity V-Twin?
That would definitely be my dream twin to own. And swap the x2 160HP Lycoming IO-320's for x2 turbonormalized 220HP ULPower UL520T's.
@@johnnyboythepilot4098 It's a neat plane, always loved the Beechcraft Starship and this is the closest I can come to owning one and I can do whatever I want with the interior
I like the MOD that hinges the rear firewall so the engine swings out of the way so you can load frieght from the rear. The Bassler conversion is pretty nice too
What??? No kidding you can do that?
@@RADIOACTIVEBUNY YUP, Aussie Mod.
Just found this channel and I'm already in love jajajaja. Amazing video keep it up. Reminds me of Donut Media but for planes. Rotor Media.
"A Continental IO-360 sandwich....and you're the meat!"
that got me rollin 😂😂😂
What a beuatiful plane so gracefull in appearance, planes are never looked on as works of art like cars are but it definately is a looker.
I wouldn't say never
"But I'd expect a steak dinner with that" haha, love it. Thanks!
New sub! Liked ❤️😀
Love the humor ❤
I love my skymaster you heretic!
Kidding, kind of... Love your videos and your art!
New sub! Liked 🙏👍
I would love to see you do a video on a Cessna 400 series plane. Those seem very attractive cost wise for what you get. Great videos. I cant get enough of them.
I'm a fan. Are you talking 414, 421 or straight up 400
@@CompleteWalkaround yeah, im glad you said something here. I forgot the 400 was a thing. but yes either of those would be cool. I think the 401 or 402 is what I would love to see the most. Thanks for responding!
Maybe a Lancair 360 or Lancair evolution next? Also a piper tomahawk would be great. Or probably a Mitsubishi mu-2. Those are some fun airplane to learn about!
MU-2 is coming sooner than later. It's an odd duck for sure
@@CompleteWalkaround at my home airport, there's alway a few mu2 flying medivac in and out. They are loud as F. Literally everyone will get into the fbo building when we see one coming.
@@CompleteWalkaround I can’t wait to see the Mu-2 video, but please make one one the Lancair 360 or Evolution sometime in the future! I drool over the sleek, clean lines of an Evolution Turbine.
Osmanen, I love this channel.the humor, the subject, the simplification and the wonderful graphics.all top notch!
Twin boom pushers are a very cool looking configuration.
One of the best. Both the 337 and fixed gear 336.
Damn underrated is what you are!
This is Awsome! Can you do a Episode on a Cessna Citation M2?
Really unique plane!
Highly detailed high part count 337 Skymaster for SimplePlanes when? 😤
I cannot explain WHY I like these so much! My Uncle (who worked on them) HATES them.
You missed the Aerostar, that’s a gorgeous plane.
When I lived in Cromwell 'central otago nz' not too long along ago' every now and then I'd hear a plane going over with a distinctive raspy sound and I'd get out my binoculars and see that it was a push pull cessna ' I never imagined I'd ever see one'but ended up seeing it numerous times.
Still is my dream plane
Well, dream destroyed. Maybe I should set my sights on a nice C150 instead :)
😂. I have both.....one for going places....one for not....my wallet tells me which one it is that week
That got some genuine laughs out of me. And I learned a thing or two in the process. Thanks dude!
Performance (speed, load) - very similar to a C-210
Cons: higher cost per hour and per mile, due to two engines. Also more noise in the cabin.
Pros: safety margins of a twin. Without the asymmetric thrust compensating shenanigans.
At the end of the day, I'd prefer a C-210. But then, I'm cheap, and kinda on the higher side of risk tolerance.
But then, if I'd see a C-210 for $300k and this C-377 thing for $100k and both engines running a-okay... IDK. Tempting. Probably not a good let alone practical idea long-term though.
Beautiful airplane
Awesome
The noise of the skymaster even scared my dog!
Fun plane to fly!
Maintenace is not anymore difficult on 337
The noise he played is w props not synched
And they made 3000 not 2000
Yes i own a 337B and would buy it again
Finally!
This was too funny! Favorite video by far
Do Pitts S2 please 🙏 (I would actually love to buy that plane one day)
The Cessna 337 Skymaster is my favourite aeroplane. I want one so much. I would get my twin engine verification immediately. I have had dream of flying the rattle-bird. I do not care if it is loud and vibrates a lot. I would not need the pressurised version of the Skymaster at all. I would fly her low so everyone could see the glory of my rattle-bird. However, the video also shows an Antonov An-2, the longest production aeroplane in history! I would not mind an, "Annie," either.
Nice, That sounds like a fine plan 🤠
Once you get your Multi engine in the 337 which is single line thrust is the only twin you can fly but nothing else
Please please do the Islander and Tecnam P2012!
1:11 That's a cartoonized and mirrored shot of C-GBWT which was shot by TheHDAviation.
Some wag once said a twin is an engine failure on takeoff just waiting to happen. Sounds like his name was Murphy. In any event from what I've read this was a major cause of fatalities for P-38 Lightning pilots and ironically the 1980's aviation journalist I read who said this in his magazine article about the P-38 was very unfortunately one of them a bit later. Perhaps this is not a good or fair comparison between a high performance WW2 fighter and a commuter aircraft but any design that would eliminate fatal crashes due to an engine failure has to be just a superb feature. Its a shame this wasn't the case with the ATR that crashed on climb out just after takeoff due to an engine failure where the PIC reduced power to idle on the good engine.
I’ve liked these since I saw air America
Can you do the piper m600 so we can compare it to the TBM 850 videos you already made? That’d be awesome!
Eventually yup. Meridian is there already too
What about a walk around for the Bell UH-1 Iroquois.
please do shark ul plane 2 seater, The one in which Zara Rutherford completed her solo circum navigation of the globe at 19.
That one is in the works
Thanks!
Thanks !
Will you doing ultra light airbike review
ATC: Cessna 123 alpha bravo, are you a Skymaster?
Pilot: No, but my instructor says I'm doing real good so far.
"the underdog skymaster is still out there flying, annoying everybody in earshot"
Overall The best one that I’ve flown in was the Riley Rocket 337
You have the model, any chances of an AN-2 video?
I laughed harder than i should have at the sandwich joke.
Yeah, did not see that one coming.
Ergo, a great joke.
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 15 Jun 22.
Good Morning Bill
Any chance a BD4c video will come out one day?
One day. It's up there on the obscure list
Wheres the fabric?! Do a colt or tri-pacer next please, there's one for sale in my town and you're better at research than me!
1914 was 11 years after the Wright brothers. Pedantry accomplished! Unless you were referring to something else the Wright brothers did, besides the obvious thing.
Haha, yes, the year Wilbur ran a 10 minute mile. You are correct, Got my dates crossed, dang
My dream plane, idk if it’s realistic to own and operate because of the age and supply of parts.
Piper apache with and without the Geronimo stc!
Piper Colt, please!
All of the cost of a twin with the only upside being that it has no critical engine. The fact that you can't get a twin rating in one says it all
Having an engine that will go through your head in a survival accident scares me
sky mixer, push pull. suck and blow, mis master one in Chino is cursed and doesn't want to leave
used to work on these and these mixmasters were a pain to work on as so many controls underneath the floor so you can add 25% onto what a normal lets say avionics antenna cable upgrade would be vs a single engine aircraft, although single engine aircraft the share the floor rib with the outside skin like a mooney are a pain also and expensive to maintain
Thanks for sharing your experience
But there Sooooooo sweet 🥰
At today's $7+ per gallon, the fuel at $100/hr equate to less that 15 gals/hour and I don't think you can begin to achieve that kind of fuel burn rate.
I use $5 for all the videos for easy comparison.
What happens if both engines fail
Comment for algo
Appreciated 👍
You think the sky master will shake something loose we'll the seaman schuckert was obviously worse.glad it was a open cockpit!
Looks like a cool little human eggbeater.😳🙊😅
i found one for 15k
im not able to buy it for 2 reasons
im 17 with no money
and im 17 with no training
When Pilatus PC-12
A sky master just crashed near Los Angeles a few months ago. He got distracted and forgot to fly the plane. Twin didn’t help. It killed him.
Cross that one off the list.
If you want to own a 337 you better be an AP/IA
I agree... it looks like... unique haha
Is a twin? I thought is a multi engine
Isn’t that the same thing?
@@billmoran3812 many moons ago when I was getting my PPL my instructor told me a twin has one engine in each wing and a Cessna 337 is a multi engine centerline. Perhaps I understood wrong or definitions changed with time.
Two different things on your ticket, one is multi-engine, the other, multi-engine center thrust. If you have one you cant fly the other until checked out. Just a quickie explanation.
Up the front engine and pop some EC135 doors on the back. Boom homemade OV10 ish...
u forgot Do-335
Ah technical review thats entertaining? Why had nobody else that idea before?
the Mix Master was a copy of a homebuilt aircraft that Joe Holster built. Joe plane flew better! It is also one of the worst planes I have ever worked on. Most pilots said they would park the planes behind the hangars so no one would see them getting out of it!
337 is a good mission oriented aircraft. Not a good family hauler.
