Last time when I was travelling around Western Europe, locals didn’t want to help me out or responded to me just because I asked them for guidance in English. I thought they didn’t understand English (I think Malaysian English accent is very easy for anyone to catch), soon I found that they actually CAN speak English, they just being patriotic I guess... I encountered this situation many times, but there were some people who helped us. Glad to see Malaysians (from cities to villages) are being very open, friendly and nice to outsiders. They even take the extra miles to explain things to foreigners (like the stall girl who explained about Nasi Kerabu), IN ENGLISH!! Now that is impressive don’t you think?
We are very sorry that you experienced that in Europe, in Portugal for example many people don’t speak English specially older people but in mostly every country we visited in Europe we found it easy to communicate, in Europe it’s harder to find friendlier people, in asia is super easy that’s one of the reasons we love asia so much and spend most of our time.
Travelgramers Thanks, it wasn’t your fault. I was just a bit frustrated about those unfortunate encounters. On the bright side, there were indeed a few friendly people who were willing to help me and my friends and they showed us around the city etc. Overall, my experience in Europe (specifically Western Europe) wasn’t entirely bad. There were some memorable events! 😊

Other countries such as Belgium & Netherlands on the other hand are just so friendly and have excellent English speaking ability. The rest of Western Europe are normal too I guess.
