    This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that's the way I like it!

    As someone who lived in South Africa in the mid nineties and flew them transatlantic many times it’s great to see them begin to make a comeback. Unfortunately the government spending money without any meaningful change is kinda par for the course in ZA.

      SAA will never be like before 1994,i flew SAA Jan Smuts to Munich in July 2019 and was so surprised in the quality of the flight, before that i only flew Lufthansa or SWiss air to Germany, and to be honest the food was 10 times better than the mentioned airlines ,staff was pleasant

    Thank you for this review. That is the SAA I remember, often better than just "world class". The airport lounges in ZA are miles better than any lounge I have experienced in Heathrow, JFK or Frankfurt. The loos at the Slow Lounge are immaculate. So pleased to see the airline is moving in the right direction

    SAA is my all time favourite airline. The service is always great. I have flown on all their short haul products in both classes including their old 737-800s. I also have flown their A330-300 economy and it was great. Hopefully, they will go into triple figures in age. They should reinstate their Dar Route regardless of aircraft as Airlink is sometimes Unreasonable with times and policies.

      I forget where i said it- maybe on a community post. But I think… if 5 years from now SAA is still expanding but perhaps haven’t left the continent yet, then we might see a long term success story. I don’t see any reason why they can’t have code shares and have LH group do the heavy lifting and then SAA just focuses on the region for a while. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

      but the chances of SAA ever flying again the full international routes is very slim,as we all know once you have lost your time slot routes like SAA had to the US and EU countries Australia it can take up to 10 years and longer to get it back, and SAA gave back most of its Airbus planes , as far as i know it only has 2 A340, flying the Dakar and Cape Town route, could be wrong

    The downfall of SAA is much more complex than that, and largely originated in the endless meddling of incompetent politicians, who simply do not understand how to run an airline - and it should actually have been shut down completely, before it abused the poor South African tax payer as much as it did with endless bailouts. Even now the transaction with the Takatso consortium is not complete, and if one looks at the structure of that group, it still means the government owns most of the airline - so those bailouts are not going to stop. For many South African's, myself included, who do not fly on SAA on principle because of this, the view is that it is best to simply shut it down. The people working there (if they are not on strike) will find work as the market gaps will be filled by private enterprises. Maybe Comair/British Airways, will make a return - competent, knowledgeable people there ran a good, profitable, operation until covid hit, but unlike SAA, did not get financial assistance and ended up being shut down.

      @@tfft Of course - I understand that - just felt it needed a bit of additional commentary!
      Incidentally, those A350's were not quite "brand new" - I flew on one - outside it said "SAA", inside it was pure Hainan airlines - all in red. Even the moving map showed the A350 in Hainan livery! In the short period they were part of SAA (in this case courtesy of covid - not their doing), I don't think SAA ever managed to change the interior to their own colour scheme, etc.

    • @eisbeinGermany

      as much as i agree with you that it should be shut down of which we all know it never will be as it is an easy milking cow for the corrupt ANC cadres its been proven that if a country does not have a national carrier other airlines make misuse of the system and raise their prices of which can be seen when booking a flight out from Jan Smuts airport to Germany, its around 6/7000 Rands more expensive now, British airlines price for certain times can be as much as R 25000 with two booked seats on the economy, thye use the excuse of the demand has become higher,,,

    CPT-MIA was one of SAA's better routes. Being on the coast allows planes to take off very heavy and fully fueled. JNB's high altitude meant that only their A340-600 could fly non-stop to the US. CPT to the US didn't have that problem. It was rank corruption and moronic routes to Beijing, Mumbai and Abu Dhabi that wrecked them.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  Год назад

      Better in what metric? I'm sure the seats were full, but both MIA and CPT- especially back then- are/were low yielding markets.

    • @stephenfienberg8765
      @stephenfienberg8765 Год назад

      @@tfft My father flew that route several times in the 00s. MIA like ATL is a huge hub despite not being one of the biggest cities. Traffic between the 2 countries will always be hub and spoke as most flights between the two countries are over 15 hours. SAA could only do JNB-JFK in the A340-600 with about 80% of the seats sold to not exceed the MTOW for JNB's altitude. The IAD route stopped in Dakar or Accra for the outbound route in the A340-300 but could make the return flight without a fuel stop. In the 747 days the JFK flight stopped in Sal Island, Cape Verde. Even Delta's 777-200LR couldn't sell all the seats for their JNB-ATL flights. Now they alternate between a ATL-JNB-CPT-ATL triangular route and 2 separate flights depending on load factors at different times of the year as I believe the A350-900 has more severe MTOW restrictions for the 16+ hour flight out of JNB than the 777-200LR.

    • @stephenfienberg8765
      @stephenfienberg8765 Год назад

      @@tfft But to answer your question more directly. You need to view the US, itself as the market, not the individual mid sized cities of ATL and MIA. MIA as you'll know is a massive hub, not just for a connecting flight anywhere in the US and Canada but also to the Caribbean and Central America. Since CPT is in the West of SA and at sea level, there's no MTOW restrictions and with such regular JNB flights, an urban area of 14 million, it just makes it an easy one stop option for most of the country to fly to a large American hub. Incidentally, United started flying to CPT before JNB after heavy lobbying from a Western Cape business association WESGRO for a direct flight from the US. EWR-CPT has been so popular since the pandemic that United has subsequently started EWR-JNB and IAD-CPT. American is currently being lobbied by WESGRO to start that same MIA-CPT flight. Incidentally, on a recent trip to London, the CPT-LHR used to fly many Americans on BA's large network of American cities. Now the flights are so expensive and with more direct flights to the US, fewer travelers use them that way. In Dec, the only chatter of a connection to the US I heard was about MIA. Heathrow staff were directing the passengers off the plane with signs to make their MIA connection in time. It's the only US city I heard talk of people connecting to.

      Airlink has taken over completely, go look on flight radar 24 jnb and see every second flight is Airlink, Airlink has so many flights now to countries around SA, even CEMair of the Oppenheimer family are having slowly more flights, SAA itself is not the problem its the ethnic group running the airlines that the problem,
