- The Gothard Sisters explained the difference between an Irish jig and an Irish reel at a performance in Cleveland Ohio in 2013. Believe it or not, the words strawberry and rutabaga will tell you the difference. The Gothard Sisters are a dynamic all-female Irish music and dance group from the Pacific Northwest, USA. The three sisters perform and record new Celtic arrangements of well-known traditional tunes and popular songs, as well as their own original compositions from their 7 recorded studio albums. The video includes part of their performance. www.clevelandpe...
This helps so much! I have a music assessment and I always get confused on how to tell if a piece is a Jig or a Reel.
Thank-you!
A 6/8 jig has a different beat so if you clap your hands to a jig it will be 1 23 like a gallop the beats in a reel are even 123, Scottish jigs are slower than reels, hope this helps
Three most gorgeous angels to listening to and I love them
I'm a tragic accordionist in Australia, I used to play a lot of Scottish, some dancers told me they couldn't tell the difference between a jig and a reel and I used to try to explain it by hand clapping, your demonstration would have been ideal, you are pretty girls and great players.
reels and strathpeys are indigenous to Scotland. jigs are english
@@brucecollins4729 I call them all music of the British isles, many people passionately disagree with me that they are not Irish born
I'm an Australian musican... so would it be accurate to say a jig is accented in 3s... and a reel is in 4s.
@@adamjacksonmedia Reels are 3 even beats jigs in 6/8 are 3 beats but the accent is on the 1st note of triplets rum tata rum tata
This ruined me, lol. Forever more, I'll be listening to lovely Celtic instrumentals, and going : "Strawberry-strawberry strawberry-strawberry, strawberry-strawberry strawberry-strawberry..." XD
Adrea Brooks lol me to. Is this a strawberry? I wonder.
Could be worse - One of my dance teachers once encouraged me to say "Carrots and Cabbages" along to Jigs...
Jigity -jigity - jigity works for me 😀
Fantastic and fun clip. Have to keep an eye-out in the Bay Area for The Gothard Sisters!
have often wondered about the difference...this really clarifies things. Thanks.
Yeah, one is a fruit, the other is a vegetable.
Oddly enough, that was actually helpful out of all the viedos I've been watching!!! Thank you, ladies! You're amazing musicians, and I love your humor and inviting presence! Keep playing!
Reels are in 4, jigs are in 3 that's the difference
That's great stuff. Thx for the info. Someone asked me that question about Irish music a few nights ago and I didn't know the answer; now i do, strawberries and jigga me jigga! hahaha-love it!
It’s ‘rutabaga’ not jigga me jigga. It’s what they call a swede in the US
Thanks for the explanation!!!

Would love to know the ethnicity of these lovely girls. Gothard is not a name that reached Ireland, & with one of the girls being named Greta, I'm guessing they are of German ancestry. Doesn't matter, I like them.
Maybe their irish is from their mothers side.
Thx Dan
I always wondered.
What if it's a horn pipe?
Your mom!
John Stephen Dwyer a hornpipe is a wee bit slower and has a kind of "swing" to it, usually written in simple time
Most hornpipes go 1. 'one banana...', some go 2. 'banana one...' (eg. Captain Pugwash theme, the 'Trumpet Hornpipe') & some skip a beat to get 3. a "YAH_wobble" - eg. Kate Bush's 'Rocket Man' combines reggae & hornpipe. ('YOUR momma...' also works but, rhythm-wise, 'Your mom' is a polka;-)
@@differous01 Thanks!
My Sisters Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year to my loves
How do you get that blond without bursting into flames spontaneously?
What’s the “reel “ word?
"Rutabaga "
But "Coca cola " works for me 😀
I love this...my wife and I were just discussing the difference between a jig and a reel and found this on Google :-). You guys are the best!!!! And happy belated Saint Pattys Day!
Love it! I’m gonna go Jel-Ly-Bean instead of strawberry though to help associate with jig.
Strawberry!
Rash-ers and sau-sa-ges for a jig and Black and Deck-er for a reel
do any of you know the name of the reel they play?
+smiley doughnut It's toss the feathers. It drove me mad trying to remember where I'd heard it!
+Will Ashworth thanks! :)
Toss the feathers? That's not the version I've heard. Not even close. Maybe there's more than one.
Yes, there is more than one reel called Toss the Feathers
There is a D, a Dm, and an Em version, This is the D version which I learned from the Corrs.
That was so pretty :')
So jigs are 3/4 or 6/8 and reels are 4/4? And whats a hornpipe? Its 4/4 is it a marching song?
Too Funny! Love it!
So... at the end the played a jig or a reel? xD I go for a jig but I'm not sure at all.
It is a reel
My mom says a jig-and I do too!
So the song at the end was a jig?
what is the name of this tune?
ok then so whats the difference between a jig, a reel and a slide?
Ur mom
So glad to hear atleast some children have good taste in music!
6/8 for jig, 4/4 reel, 12/8 slide. that's a basic difference. the rhythm is what matters.
I love 🐲💝💎
Feckin' awesome!
So a jig is accenting triplets... and a reel is 4s.
Ola
Sounds original
So, in fact, Marilyn Manson's Beautiful People is a Jig. Sweet!
strawberry strawberry strawberry all i sing is strawberry and i jig all day
And here was me thinking that for playing jigs you only needed 3 fingers :)
