  • Just some updates in this video. I have put it in more of a story board format, showing progress throughout February in the same video by editing short clips together. I hope you find it useful. All comments are welcome, as always!

    Keeping the bricks horizontal on the ramp wall was definitely worth the effort. Looks fantastic. :)

    Looks superb Dave your attention to detail is amazing plus I wish I had your carpentry skills in making the bridge.
    That brick paper looks great and I do like the girders you've made with the weathering.
    Cheers for showing Kev

      Kev, thanks mate. I am pretty happy with that girder if I am being honest. Surprised myself with the weather. Love learning new skills. Dave

      I hope it turns out well, thanks for your confidence. You know what its like, having your own layout at a similar stage, you want to get it finished, but at the same time you don't want to rush it and screw it up! Dave

    Looks good Dave, the ballasting has come out nice. The layout will really come to life when you ballast for real.
    Good to see your adding the cable trunking. Peco make some dummy scale point motors that look really good with scale wiring and cable trunking.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Cheers, yeah I have some of those Peco dummy motors, they look pretty good. I will just paint them and put them on the layout prior to weathering the ballast...when I get around to that! Dave

    Great video, Really nice work with the ballasting taster, Its very neat ;), I think I might have to buy myself one of those ballasters as they seem to do a cracking job!

  • @Oorail
    @Oorail 10 лет назад +1

    Excellent work. If you plan to weather your track (especially if you plan to weather it manually and not with an airbrush), you will want to weather it with the appropriate paint mix before you apply the ballast, its a lot easier that way! :)

    Loved the format and being able to see the progression as you go along. The layout is looking fantastic and I can't wait to see it once the ballast is down! Hope you enjoyed Model Rail Scotland as much as I did; your layout is on course to be of exhibition quality itself! :)

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Hi Shaun, yeah Model Rail Scotland was great, but was it just me or was it not as big as in previous years? (no Hornby stand etc!). I cant wait for the ballast to go down too...but jobs to be done before that, so I better crack on! Cheers. Dave

    • @Katketty
      @Katketty 10 лет назад

      DaveClass47 This was my first year attending having missed it last year. The lack of a Hornby stand was somewhat of a disappointment though hopefully they will be attending Perth this year. MRS was smaller than I had expected but after attending EuroSpoor in Holland, I think anything will be in comparison! Good luck :)

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Two years ago the Model Rail Scotland took up two halls of he SECC. That's my 5th year in a row, having only taken u the hobby again recently. Hornby usually have a large exhibition area, but I think the A4 "The Great Goodbye" was on the same weekend, and as Hornby are a major sponsor in that I think they'd put all of their resources in to that!

    Excellent video as usual, Dave. I'm deep in Scale Scene land at the moment and would advise anyone reading this that it would be a good time to buy shares in Epson, Stanley and Prit Stick just now! I'd do find the kits very rewarding though and recommend them.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Yeah I have gone through over 20 Stanley blades, 4 pritts, easily 8 tins of spray glue, over a dozen tins of spray varnish and several ink cartridges to date. But you're right, they are rewarding. Dave

    • @ruralaccentwoodcraft604
      @ruralaccentwoodcraft604 7 лет назад

      Hope Park Junction Hope the shares are returning well! Do you find ink jet printing works OK and lasts? Do you spray matt varnish to finish?

    Just a thought... if you're grey cement is looking too green, it could be your overhead lights. If you have fluorescent lamps there in your workshop (even one), the color temperature is around 2700 K and will often have a sickly green cast to them. Our eyes adjust to the greenish tint, but not color surface. The color surface (especially grey) may look off green-ish or blue-ish. If you'd like to see true color, try using "white light". A bulb or lamp with something in the range of 5,000 K to 5,500 K. Look for bulbs labeled "daylight balanced". This is the color temperature observed outdoors at midday in bright sun and will give a much more realistic look (color wise) to your layout.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Hi, yeah I do have fluorescent tubes. Thanks for the advice. I suspected the light was having an effect on things. But not sure if I can change them just now. ;-(
      Cheers.

    Great update, you know, this card your using really looks nice. Your adding the realism to with some of the modifications your making. Really makes it all stand out and look great. I have never seen the cable run items before, can you point me to a link to these on the web somewhere? They look really interesting. Thanks for sharing!

    Looking really good. I use the same tool for my ballesting. I then spray with a sleeper grim from rail match. Those cages look really fiddlely

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Yup I have loads of sleeper grim ready to go when the time is right. Cages were fiddly, but they are worth it, I am really pleased with them. The 3 of them took about 2 hours to build. But as I build more I 'hope' to get quicker at it!!! Dave

    Dave that walling looks epic now, will steal your bridge idea with the half girders it changes the appearance completely and looks fantastic, and a great job with the ballasting, you layout is really coming together now.
    I got my 47 from Hattons last week in BR Exec livery, very please with it, any joy with Hornby and your class 43, or is that a stupid question Andy

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  10 лет назад

      Andy, thanks for your kind comments. By all mean 'steel' my steel girder idea...I have no copyright on ideas lol.
      As for the HST....what do you think? lol. June its coming out apparently. But not getting too excited about that yet as I will just have my hopes dashed again. Its bizarre but I have been told (by hattons I think) that the east coast region HST is to be released before the Western Region one...I cant work that one out as the Western is over two years late but still a new 2014 release of the eastern region one is coming out first! Hornby and Simon Kohler were not at model rail Scotland this year so I could ask about that!

      Terry, thanks for the kind comments once again. I have learned everything from watching others on you tube! I like to plan things out and take my time to try emulate some of the excellent layouts online, yours being one of them.
      I am working on cable trunking and relay box placement now, along with some CR Signals, not wired up yet. Learning about signalling and wiring for the Heathcote electronics stuff as I go along! Dave

      I had a layout when I was 6 until the age of 14, but that was more of a 'train set', so maybe I don't qualify for the 'first time layout builders club'? hehe. Dave

      Cheers Terry! A bit of advice needed please?....what do you use for your orange cabling that goes under the rails, joining up cable trunking? And how do you install it? does it require any major cutting of sleepers etc? Cheers

    The bridge area provides a very dramatic effect for the layout. and has been beautifully crafted. Having made about 4 scale scenes buildings I know how hard it is to get the perfect finish. I am really impressed.
    A few more questions. How deep is your cork? Not sure if you said 3 ml. Mine is 3 ml for the main lines but I think you need to exaggerate some vertical distances in n gauge to get the desired effect.
    Are the quoins just paper and stuck onto the corner or were they backed?
    Have you tried using the Humbrol weathering powders on any scale scenes buildings.
    Continuing to enjoy the series. Thanks very much.
    Regards,
    Anthony Ashley

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Anthony Ashley Hi, my cork is 1/16" thickness for the station area (as I didn't want track sitting any higher when trains were at the platforms. The mainline is 1/8" (3mm?) and allows a bigger ballast shoulder, just like on the real railway.Not use powders on the scalescenes as yet. The quoins are scalescenes, glued on to the corner with a healthy covering of pritt stick!Dave

      Hi, I used Woodland Scenics Medium grade grey blend ballast. I will use this for the mainlines and for future TMD area I plan to use a finer, darker grade. Cheers for your comment, really appreciated! Dave
