Real question is: Where the fuck was Jiraiya? Dude's explicitly Naruto's godfather but didn't meet him until he was 13, which was a chance meeting at that. He couldn't have been "acting as Konoha's spymaster" because he never knows a damn thing about any of the big events coming up (i.e. he "thinks Orochimaru has a connection to the sound village" when there's Sound Ninja openly stating they work for Orochimaru)

Sasuke trying to "go band for band with Kakashi on misery" was when you knew that fucker was just completely lost. It was the second time Kakashi had stated everyone he cared about was dead. The first time, he could be forgiven for forgetting since it was months ago and just after Team 7 was officially formed so it might not have stuck out to him. But then he tries to go "Oh I'll just kill everyone you care about. Because you clearly have never lost anyone and don't understand my pain", only for Kakashi to tell him "Yeah, you're about 13 years too late for that, brat." and Sasuke didn't even have some reflection of "Oh, other people, have suffered too. Shit, maybe I should stop being so self-centered."
I mean it did work and make him reflect. Sasuke was on that tree branch contemplating late into the night then the Sound 4 pulled up to instigate
