Today, 2 years later, in episode 114, you have officially finished the first cabin. What a journey.. I am so so so very happy for you.. thanks for the ride 💚
This series has me again asking myself the question of whether it's more enriching for ones soul to see 1000 different places or to see one place, in a thousand different lights and a thousand different moods on a thousand different days and a thousand different nights.
I love how you phrased it
Well said. That is a very good question. I'm sure over a life that One Place experienced in many different ways would just as good if not better than seeing a 1000 different places. The latter would be too hectic.
I so think the 1000 ……..
What a deeply beautiful question 🤔
The experience is relative, you have a very poetic thought process .
👍🏻For all of us who are here today after the episode #114 🙌🏻❤️
If you found this, you found the single best thing on youtube. Congratulations. This has brought so much joy to my wife and I as we watch this in the evenings. Thank you soooo much Martijn. Calling this series a masterpiece would be an understatement.
Is it only me or this is just refreshing to watch... I like that there is no background music just you and the sound of the wind, work...this is amazing project and wish you all the best...
Amen to no music that is loud and drowns out what’s said. I like the sounds of nature and what’s going on too.
agreed agreed! love it when creators have a feel for when music would just be in the way :)
It is refreshing
Hits a challenge @08:17 ...turns to the view....all is well
That was like therapy watching that. Felt so emerged into the surroundings and a tad envious at what will he such a beautiful simple life, which we all now crave! Waking up to that view!! Wow!
I respect you showing moments of struggle that are often absent from so much video blogging these days. Life is never perfect and in those moments, you rest, regather yourself, and try again. Wish you all the best on this project.
Is making the video the motivating factor ? It seems so many people are doing this . But are they genuinely inspired or doing as they've been influenced

I follow you on that one. I strongly believe that watching so many movies and series have negatively altered our way to approach life. Nobody goes to pee or poo in almost any movie, doors aren't locked, nobody farts... Very freudian description but not on purpose ^^ it's just what easily comes to mind. But I guess you can see the point.
Thanks for not putting ridiculous music all the way through. I love to hear the natural sounds of landscape and activity.
I am Italian from Milan, and I am based in Australia. Watching this video makes me think what an heritage and how many beautiful spots we have in Italy and Italians ignore or are not even aware of their existence. I am grateful to people like him, valuing our land. Thank you

...yes, Italy is beautiful
Totally agree 👍
E io sono di Como per quanto belle siano le nostre zone purtroppo sono inospitali per parecchi mesi l'anno, dato il clima estremamente rigido... impossibile vivere off-grid qui a meno che non disposti ad una vita durissima e di grandi sacrifici...
@@matros1493 yeah I was wondering what this place would be like in the winter. that road must be impassible and that’s quite a hill to get up and down. Maybe he’s gonna put in a zip line 😂
When I grew up I used to visit my grandfather in Italy, he would have used those 2 homes to keep his sheep, as he rotated them eating grass all over the hills. Keep them there at night, then return in the morning. We sold milk and cheeses. I miss it. Beautiful spot you have.

It’s extremely rare to begin watching a channel previously unseen and to know, within just a few seconds, that I want the episode to last for hours. I have serious ADHD and it takes something very special to keep my attention. What you’re doing is special. Thank you and the very very best of luck to you.
Beautiful and creative! My sister and brother-in-llaw did the same thing in mountains up in a past a little town called picket burg in South Africa.
I’ve got silly ADHD
Guess you have just found what really interests you...thats a rare gift.
I am not sure, but could living in such kind of environment be beneficial for your ADHD?
@@joachimguth6226 They’re not talking about living like this. They’re talking about how this show holds their interest.
I really like that you show the real picture. That you show when things go wrong for you, not giving a false expectation that everything will just go right in life but instead showing that shit happens and life goes on. Feels like a very honest account of your experiences
Re-watching the first episode at the homestead. Martijn just rebuilt the campsite and outdoor kitchen after the terrible storm.
What a great beginning! All the hall marks are here: staggering drone shots of unspeakable beauty; Martijn's work ethic and serious skills in full view.
Johannes the Priest just over the mountain. And the vistas of Val Pellice a constant astonishing presence.
Easily my favorite RUclips subscription!
Thanks Martijn!
Savagely painful to watch because I always wanted to do this after a life of building, with a love of stone. The roof! Those slabs of rock, the precision stonework. Genius and passion frozen in time. You are a lucky man indeed.
You are so right, savagely painful to watch, but so rewarding when it's finally cleaned up and livable. Then come all the niceties.
The fact that building nowadays is an impossible thing to do if you don’t have the money. It doesn’t even matter where you live anymore, it’s that expensive. It’s just sad. So many of us probably would love to have their own home to live in
٠ط
Do it then man.
Reminds me of the huge slate slabs used to roof some old properties in Tintagel, Cornwall.
To fill in the void during the week, I started watching the first episode again!! How far you’ve come in a short 2.3 years!!!
He certainly has. I enjoy watching the first one again and seeing where he is now.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dear Martijin, There will come a time when RUclips will become sophisticated, it will have matured and reach the stage where awards and formal acknowledgements will be assigned to those videos that over the years that were most remembered and were most influential in the beginning of this new medium. Whether you realize this or not, and long after you have moved onto different projects and avenues in your life, this body of work will be enjoyed, discussed, shared and remembered by millions of individuals scattered across the world for years into the future. Sending you my best. Sincerely, Joseph Blanchette
We found this purely by accident and immediately became obsessed watching it. I love both ends of enriching livestyles...whether its an English Manor /French Chateau or a mountainside rustic cabin!
This video has brought me so much peace. I sometimes feel alone in desiring to be free from the superficiality and materialism that is advertised by modern “Western” culture. There is something that seems so purposeful about this journey and it inspires me. I am grateful for the time and effort you have put in to share your experience with us.
The peace and desire for freedom is very relatable, but realistically speaking without that modern "Western" culture there would not be a video platform as such that you could enjoy peace from in the comfort of your home.
Well said my friend...I would welcome this journey
You have great merit. I wish you much fulfillment w your undertaking. Peace from the U S..
@Molly Finn you are not alone!! ✌🏼
You are not alone! 🙏❤
4.9 Million views, so glad to be able to travel with you from the beginning Martijn. Your storytelling and filmography are award winning transporting your audience into the magical land that is the Italian Alps.
Thank you🙏❤
The stone roof is amazing. First thing I noticed. I work with stone and my eye was immediately drawn to them. Those stone buildings are gems.
Discovered the channel about a year ago, and now going back to the beginning to see how the place looked originally and to appreciate how much was done before I started watching.
Awesome production value, this is really something that stands out on RUclips, taking the time to experience the moment. I grew up close to the Alps, and this video feels like I am there. It's rare these days that one doesn't feel the urge to click to the next video.
It looks wonderful there. I wonder how one finds land like that. Amazing
Dear Martijn, thank you for sharing this with us. It has helped me with my depression. I love all the progress you've made and the fortitude you have in building your home. It inspires me to change my life in some way. Don't know what that will be yet, but to live someplace where I can find solace and beauty in nature. I was a landscaper for 20 years and various other jobs as well so I appreciate the heavy work you're doing. Thank you again. You're very brave. Your coffee looks delicious!
Just finished watching episode #32 and wanted to come back to check out the 1st one that got me hooked. 4.6 million views at this time! Wow Martijn! I'm not surprised at all. This series is so wholesome it is literally one of the best things on the entire internet. Carry-on Sir, please.
Well, here I am, a year later, like you I felt compelled to watch it again as this series is indeed "one of the best things on the entire internet" :o). As I love to read the comments section, I'm delighted to notice many of us are back, the "re-watchers"!
I just found this and watched this episode together with my wife. I can do understand why the location with the view appeals to you Martijn. While I watched this my comments must have altered between ‘this place is amazing’ and ‘goodness me, what is getting himself in to’. But you’re doing it. And we will keep following your adventure here cause the footage you created, while wrestling with everything you were facing, is amazing.
I sit in the comfort of my small home and watch your struggles in awe. May the power that is guide you and protect you to a successful renovation. Amazing videos of your home and surroundings Your patience and determination are naked for all to see. Take care. We applaud you for your tenacity and willfulness.❤️
Beautiful words!!
What an absolute joy!
Such a welcome break with all the grim problems of western modernity!
I find this idea very, very appealing!
FANTASTIC VIDEO! I am so tired of watching American homesteads, finally something EUROPEAN, very relevant and relatable! thank for posting this.
I stumbled upon your videos as I recuperate with long-COVID syndrome. The long-COVID journey has been a discouraging 12 months, so far. Your story inspires me. I love your determination to use traditional materials and traditional ways. I love your being so grounded in the natural terrain and beauty. I love the presence and attention to detail which permeates all that you are doing. Thank you for sharing your journey. It is a peaceful, bright, hopeful spark ... in a sometimes discouraging world. :)
The humanity, the humility and the picturesque beauty is wonderful to watch. I wish you every success on the journey Martijn. Sláinte from the emerald isle of Éire.
Lovely comment ❤🇮🇪
Hey neighbor, I'm just a few minutes in and have to go outside now..., but: great pacing, great shots (the sparse lighting in the hut with the texture of the stone walls looks awesome). Ilike the minimalism combined with narration segments. Looking forward to watching the rest and the coming episodes!
There they are!!
Those foreigners coming to Italy, buying old derelict buildings, fixing them, probably, making them nicer than before and, last but not least, repopulating areas that through the years are left deserted by its population.
You darn good people!!
Thank you. 😸
@@paolagrando5079 Hats off to him !! I'd rather live like him than in any apartment in a large city, where you are dependent on the 💩system that could be closed down at anytime they wish to do so. Plus the advantage of far less expense. The biggest drawback that I can see so far is not having a road right up to the house. But maybe in future this could be feasible. Auguri di buone feste.🎄🎄🎄
@@angelaberni8873 There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways of life. As you pointed out in your comment.
A major issue with living in the the mountains in Italy is a) that you are entirely dependent on having a car, and b) you can have a long drive down steep windy roads to get anywhere else, which can be a problem for example in snow and ice, though no doubt that is part of the attraction.
When I bought in Italy the place was surrounded by hundreds of sq km of hills/mountains, but I could walk to the shops in 10 mins. And I have lived in a rustico, an hour's walk from the town, and without a car, which in winter was not easy.
Anyone who decides to live in a remote place in Italy, or anywhere else, has to think carefully about what they are doing, though it looks on the face of it that this guy has done so, either that or he has had previous experience. Whichever, I wish him luck.
@@jonathannewby5795 What a peculiar comment. You decide to live up a mountain, but please be warned you'll need a car!... Are mountain locations in UK/US/Canada et al served with underground/subway stns next to your house? In Italy/Europe it might be hours to get to the nearest shop right? In the US/Canada it might take a day(s) before you actually reach what some might call civilisation. "Steep drives down winding roads", who would have thought when you live up a mountain! Snow and ice , bloody hell(!), I thought Italy was always sunny! You must certainly be some clueless UK townie on a mid life crisis...
@@luiginiolu6842 You miss the fact that I was replying to a comment about the drawbacks of living in the city, that there are pros and cons to both, one of which is that you don't need a car in a city.
I live in the hills in Italy ( and I know all about the rural life), but not halfway up a mountain, been there done that, the difference being that I prefer not to have to drive 40 hairpin bends (closed in winter snow, at least where I live, where you get a metre) to visit a cafe, etc. Great if you like the challenge. Canada/US, both of which I know, in particular the Northern Sierra, cannot in any way be compared with Italy.
I've seen several people buy and sell up near me. Why? I know an agent who has 300 properties in the hills on his books, and has difficulty selling anything that is remote, needs restoration, lacks mod cons, or does not have a pool. Does that tell you anything? I wonder why these properties are cheap? Is it because people are stupid? In case you didn"t know, rural properties, with land, are two a penny in Italy, I've got two for sale myself, one unchanged in 300 years, stupendous views, built in stone, (including the roof), in the back of beyond. Wanna buy it ? On second thoughts, not to you, I'd rather sell to someone who is courteous. I'm fully aware of the charms (and problems) of country living in Italy, which is why I bought the properties in the first place.
''Chi vive in questa frazione della montagana circondato dai boschi di castagni arrampicata sui margini estremo della terra, e rassegnato ad una pace ed un ritmo pacato degni di un tempo in cui la technologia non era che un sogno'.
Fine work. The composition of the shots, the various camera angles you use, the minimalistic but perfectly sufficient script -- a pleasure to watch.
I can feel piece and quiet. I can smell the soil. No background music. No one talking fast and alaud. Love it. WTF I'm even weeping.
Great to watch! A few tips considering the stove: position it at the highest point in the roof. The draft will be better and you will gain more heat from the longer indoor stretch of pipe. Also you will get less smoke into your house from outside. Replace the bend in the pipe by two 135 degree angles, this will also improve the draft.
That sounds like really good advice. This guy must have the heart of a lion and the balls of a bull!
Going to be tough going in that location during the long winter.
Good luck to him!
I encourage you to learn everything you can about the art of drystone walling. As a waller, there is a massive amount of skill and knowledge that goes into building a structure like that. The buildings are in incredible condition.

I'm doing a renovation on a chapel myself and I know just how much work goes into it. I take my hat off to this chap. The frustrations are huge, but so are the rewards, when things come right.
It’s amazing what one person can do with a little determination and a few handy tools!
Amazing. What struck me was how similar all the vegetation is to the woods here in Scotland.. if only we had forests like that and we hadn’t ecologically devastated this country
Sadly also Italy has been devastated, far more than UK I'm afraid. Some nice spots still survive tho and I hope that nowdays people is more environmental friendly
"devastated"? That is a heavy word and not sure it's truly accurate and seems like hyperbole. For example, devastated is Ukraine where Russia has bombed and destroyed.
@@jasonstone3894 absolutely nothing to do with each other...one is devastation of nature. The other is devastation of civilization and people.

Martijn, my ancestors were Waldensians, and lived in Prarostino (Borgata Cardoni). I also have a couple of ancestors from Rora. @Keith Godown lol same thought. I was thinking it might be haunted place 😀
I would strongly advise the purchase of wood cooking stove (cucina economica); it will heat very efficiently and economically as well as providing a large cooking surface and oven. Some models have a hot water container as well. They are very popular for mountain houses (like mine). Beautiful place and beautiful structures, by-the-way. Good luck with the renovation and enjoy.
I live in the mountains of Colorado at an elevation of 8200 feet and I use a wood cook stove all the time to heat my homestead and cook on.
Yeah, and check beforehand how many KwH the stove is said to have, because they do not all have the same heating capacity ;)

When you watch videos of this type of activity that are made in North America, when the person stops for a coffee break it's invariably instant, which yields tasteless brown dishwater. But this gentleman breaks out his Bialetti so he can percolate real ground beans. From that moment on, I was hooked!
I’ve really enjoyed this. I’m enjoying these kind of restorations over the ones where everything old is ripped out and replaced with all expensive and new materials. With this project, you really have to think everything through and be quite resourceful. I’m sure you’ve been told a hundred times, but I’ll say it too, be careful and don’t get injured. Looking forward to the next video. I’m watching from Southern California, my grandparents from Italy. The mountains are breathtakingly beautiful! 🌿

I am approaching retirement age but still kind of young, and strong by the grace of God, I have been thinking myself of selling everything, and do my own soul searching, I live in Texas seeking anywhere but city life. This video you started has giving me hope if you can do and a local priest can do it perhaps, I can do it too. I do have great memories of my travel in Europe the most memorable is a train ride across the Swiss/Italian Alps. From Basel, Swiz to Florence, Italy, views of the small towns and open country were spectacular. I can only imagine the real thing of living there. Thanks for the hope. Gracias

It's encouraging to see people just doing their projects, thank you for sharing that with us!
Good luck! I have a property in Tuscany, but much more established. Can I suggest that you start with infrastructure and get an even, flat path layed down to move your items to the house. That will make everything so much easier as you move materials and supplies. Don't underestimate how much easier this will make it! Also, less risk of twisting an ankle or knee and stopping you working all together!

And very relaxing to see, although you do all the hard work. I can't wait to see all your endeavours !!! I wish you lot's of luck, persistance and building fun and satisfaction. Keep it coming.
