10 years, over 350k,1 transmission rebuild, all the normal periodic maintenance for a 4.5 " lifted with 33s and 410 gears.I still drive it every day and pull a tool trailer most work days. When it dies I'll build it again , I love the old girl. BTW it's a 98 4door 4wd.
I bought my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport brand new; I'm the only owner. It has just over 150K miles on it. I've had a blown head gasket and the headliner is falling down; otherwise it's been reliable. I've lived in Colorado, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Michigan with it. It's just now starting to show a spot of rust in the driver's side rocker; otherwise it's rust-free. I keep it garaged in the summer, but it's my daily driver all winter every year. Love my XJ.
I have been relying on my 96 4.0 with 260,000 now every day for about 6 years. It needed a lot over that time. The list is too long to put here BUT it was all doable and it made life interesting. My advice to anyone getting an older or higher mileage car is expect things to go wrong and if you care about the vehicle, be proactive so you can fix issues before they snowball. Im convinced these old jeeps could be on the road almost indefinitely if taken care of. As of yet, no vehicle can mechanically repair itself. If you take care of them they will take care of you.
My stock(ish) '99 2 door (240,000 plus miles) is my daily . . . And it also plows my driveway in the winter. Just normal maintenance on a 20 plus year old vehicle . . . Yes, rust, but again, old vehicle. Two thumbs up
I don't think I will ever sell mine. Mine came with the factory turbo diesel engine and I love that thing. I drive it every day and offroading for weekends.
My mom had a 92 jeep cherokee and she absolutely loved that thing shou bought it after a drunk driver totaled her camry that parked on the street when we were living in uptown Minneapolis back in the early to mid 90's. It was an absolute tank in the snow and it was a great daily driver for her. Back in the early 2000's we had to have quite a few repairs done to it like new transfer case new fuel fill hose and a bunch of misc stuff and it was fully loaded too leather seats and power everything. I'm sad that we had to sell it after she moved to Florida in 2008 cause it had pretty low miles on it but it needed too much work and I already had a vehicle that was running just fine so it had to go.
Mine runs amazing. Rust hasn’t gotten to the critical areas of the frame but the rockers need to be replaced. the roof eventually as well. I had it for 8 years now and it on,y died once and it was the cops in the summer.
I have a yard full of 98's currently. Bought them to keep my 2 new to me 98 cherokee 2wd red and newer to me 98 grand cherokee 4x4 silver going strong. Bought them with big problems, red needed a motor swap, silver a computer. Oh well, getting it done!
About a year ago I bought a 98 XJ 4.0 4x4 automatic as a daily, I put on 25k miles since then. Great daily, they need a little upkeep but that’s any vehicle over 20 years old. It consistently gets 19.5 mpg in summer and about 17 in winter.
I've owned my 1996 xj for just over 2 years now, and have put on close to 20k miles. The last 4 months, it's been used a lot (around 12k miles), and just a headlight went out. I've spent quite a bit fixing it when i first got it, but mechanically it's very good.
My 99 has been my daily driver for 16 years. Just now having the mystery misfire issue. It's my 4th Cherokee. I removed the rear seat so there's more room. Everything is in containers and my surfboards lay on top. As for safety, I saw the aftermath of a 90s Cherokee Mercedes head-on collision, and the Cherokee faired way better and the driver wasn't seriously hurt. The Mercedes driver didn't do so well.
I'm looking at picking up a 4x4 one soon. Gonna use it for camping and offroading. Id like to find a 4x4 5 speed but that combo is not very plentiful. That makes em hold their value as well. It doesn't need to be a daily cause I already have a TDI.
AW4 automatic is the better trans as it can handle hauling 5000 lbs along with the d35c. The manual only tows 2000lbs. Upgraded leaf springs, rear disc & auxiliary transmission oil cooler are required to tow 5000lb with a factory XJ. Up country package comes with 2 of them. Not the disc brakes. If you have AW4/U.C.P all you need is ZJ brakes to tow 5000lbs. Which makes you able to tow 3500lbs comfortably.
AW4 is also rated for 300HP/300#🦶 which the AMC 4 liter doesnt even get near. So it will last much longer than typical automatics. Probably the manual too lol.
I need that CAD disconnect in my 98 XJ as its a daily runner. I heard bad things though and may go with hub lockers. What do you think? If its computer operated I can make it work off an Arduino or something.
@@KyleSVT that was helpful. I live in a condo so what if every time it snows I just bring it to the coin wash and pressure watch it? Dumb question but after pressure washing it should I be drying it with a cloth or doesn’t matter?
Owners of XJs: the best thing you can do if you live anywhere where road salt is used is to go full-retard with something like fluid film once per year in the fall. Remember, Rust is the real enemy. My wife’s 99 XJ sport and my ex-fleet 96 SE get the annual treatment and there’s almost zero rust on either

Please never stop making Jeep XJ videos. Keep her clean and unmodified ❤️.

Love my 1996 XJ. All stock with up country suspension.. 205.000 miles runs like new. One of the best vehicles I have ever owned.
Nice! My very first bought new car was a '99 2 door Up Country. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

That’s how we se it too. Love the straight 6…!! 👍
Likely the best overall assessment RUclips post I've seen yet. Bravo, my man!
Thank you sir!

I really want an XJ. I just don’t want to get a pos. Had a bad experience getting a 2001 grand Cherokee with the V8 and it was nothing but problems.

This is a sign! Looked at an XJ today. it would be my fourth XJ I've ever owned. Want to keep the miles off by JK.
Do it!
@@KyleSVT 1999. Beautiful gold color with limited snowflake wheels to match the xj paint. It's awesome
I daily an 87 2.5l, it's a pain in the ass but it won't die
You can have the rear springs re-arched as long as they aren't cracked or missing pieces, it's a little cheaper and saves some $.

Do it mike!
I like my TJ but is definitely a cruddy daily because of the lack of space for us individuals who are vertically gifted.
It would be super cool to see a video on towing. Not much out there even though the ratings were 2000lbs to 5000lbs.

Hi Kyle thank you 🎉
Great overview, seems like quite the versatile vehicle with a lot of great use all besides the dying in an accident part lol
Thanks dude!
🤣🤣 Yooo you got me bro. "Well ill throw in some cons why not. If you crash you will die" 🤣

Great video!
Thanks Shannon!
1995 here in Texas I'm at 277xxx
I just like anything with a straight 6 engine haha
a year?! 2k miles? Hell, my daily is a 95 XJ Country and in 1 year Ive put 12k to 15k on it. Yeah, it does well as a daily!
It is only my winter daily. Shares the load with a few others during summer
@@KyleSVT Ahhh. I see! My daily before this is my 99 TJ but I got this to fix the TJ frame. When it is done they will both have to share the miles.
I have a 1998 XJ with 273k miles and it has 0 rust anywhere
would an annual rustproof help? i'm importing an xj that's rust free
Absolutely and I also do this ruclips.net/video/6YRo_n_9r3k/видео.html

You could dry it off if you want. I Don't, usually the water falls off the jeep to the ground then freezes
@@KyleSVT thanks for the advice! 🙏

the good ol race jeep.
Always will be the race jeep

If its got the 4.0 its the best daily
Have my 99 XJ for 7 months now with no issues and put 13,000 miles on it with in those months. Running strong, AC, heat, and a beast in the winter
Feest Spring
😂😂😂😂😂😂 had mine for years 270,000
