The extra wires on the 87-90 TCM are for the comfort mode switch. Would be interesting to know if the newer TCM responds to it and which mode it gets stuck in without the switch.
For whatever it’s worth I’ve bought a couple of things from Dead Jeep and I have nothing but nice things to say about them. Their customer service is lovely and they do a good job of describing the part that’s being listed. I have yet to feel like they’ve been misleading in anything they’ve advertised

I plan on doing a 4.0 with a 4.2 carb intake, and the new Holley 2bbl system with a turbo in the next year. I'll make sure to do a write up on one of the forums. Doesn't seem like it'll be terribly difficult with a manual Jeep.

The near bad battery you can take the caps off and look in the holes, top them off with electrolyte so the liquid is above the metal fins, hook it up to battery charger on engine start until the cells are bubbling, and it's usually good for a while after that.

Thx dex im still working on my 96 fire victim.. Using 99 wire harness its coming back out.. I got a dang 98 ram that wiring makes more sense and will work somehow i saw a video on the dodges working on certain jeep setups.. pretty cool cuz i just blew up the dodge 318 dang oil pump quit.. dont know what all flew apart it was a 300 dollar truck..

Dex, Justin or any other XJ owner and lover of this tried and true vehicle that has continued to make a reputation for itself. ❤ I need some advice and guidance from my fellow XJ owners and family 😊 I have an early built 97 XJ (build date 02/08/1997) with manual windows and locks. I've thankfully owned this ole guy for the past 5+ years and I absolutely love it and would be lost not having it. The XJ is factory black and been repainted Black from the previous owner(my favorite color) and my little boy helped me name it "Vader" 😊 He loves Star Wars and Darth Vader. ❤ Now to my question, Since I've owned it all these years, there is a clicking sound in the steering wheel when I turn it a few times. It has done this the past year or so. I oiled and greased the bushing above the brake pedal and it still does it. Could it be a worn out clock spring? My horn still works fine and I have never had the Airbag light pop up in the dash cluster....

They are interchangeable, im currently running an 01 tcm in a 98 xj, the numbers or color dont need to match, the unit just needs to match and obviously fit where the old one was
@@Tpbmods i know that… my point is if its the same transmission, the control module doesnt need to match identical, you can use them off of different years as long as they have the same transmission, nothing on the tcm has to match in order for it to work, i knew exactly what my man Dex is talking about thanks very much for your concern, i had an example, yes i know it wasn’t exactly what Dex meant, but its very closely related to what Dex was saying, so i put it fourth in case anyone out there was wondering, but yea i know what he meant my dude, thanks anyway
Oh and btw renix to ob2 or vice versa obviously wont work, its not the same computer, it wont be able to read it, its like sticking an xbox game into a playstation, a child coulda told you that wasn’t going to work lol i honestly didnt think that needed to be explained and im sure Dex will figure it out soon enough, but i just wanted to let everyone know that aside from renix which isn’t very common anymore, more obd2 xjs are on the road than renix, if you got a renix xj all i can say is goodluck and have fun, they are a pain compared to the ob2
Are you referring to the TCM connector? Or connectors on the transmission itself? Sometimes, if the wire color code is same, and only the plug shape is different, you may be able to just change the plug connector end, swap wires one at a time... There are tools made to slide in and release the wire end connectors, from plug body. Sometimes , , the right size plastic straw can do the same...

And I don't personally feel hate for them, however it would be useful to be able to use 93-01 cherokee aw4's only having to swap the tcm without any rewiring after the first time. As opposed to the 42re, which needs a year specific trans, unless your willing to go through and rewire it each time for the new years tcm.
@@HawkeyeMobileAutoRepair the problem we had with swapping 42re was the flywheel had different timing marks. just as the aw4 flywheel was different in the renix era to obd1. im doing an 94 ho swap in my 88 commanche
I have a '95 that I've been trying to troubleshoot. In the video I heard mentioned that with no power to TCM, you only get 1st and 3rd.. which has been my situation. Can anyone please explain how to check for power to the TCM?
Dex... I'm having an issue. 99 xj. Led headlights. When used for long period the will sometimes not shut off. Is that switch problem? Or do I need upgrade harness?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but are you sure you're shutting the lights off before the car? There's a shutdown timer if you turn off headlight after turning the car off. That system also could be a general issue with getting headlights to shut off
Hey I own a 1996 RWD jeep, recently I bought a front differential and a 231 transfer case from a 1988 jeep to make mine a 4x4, do you have a 1996 4x4 transmission for sell? I don’t know if the 1988 transfer case can be use with a 1996 transmission
They both work for both, some people say the automatic ecu has a better idle, and the only other difference is the 89/90 ecu has an extra 7 hp from the tune
doesn't make sense...when they went from Renix to the HO. the transmission control was moved to the ECM....well that's the line of crap i was fed.....If you need an old TCM, I've got one somewhere in the Garage.
@@jzawhorodny06 theres definitely a way to do it. You need a 2000 wire harness and computer. Did 91 have a carb?? Is that the issue? Bc youre obviously going to be using a obd2 motor.. u can run it on a obd one but watch dexs video on standalone wiring harness. I found a real good one ill give you the channel name in a few

I cant stand the " what you should do" guys but... maybe stack and weld steel wheels together to sit the jeeps on so theyre not sitting on the ground. Im in ohio. I could probably sell clean floor pans and rockers.

The newer ones default to power mode
Default is Power, and you can do a Comfort switch bypass to always be in Power.
I think they could until 95 or 96, there's a forum post about it

I bought a 231j from dead jeeps and a front axel for a dana 30. I had a good experience with them. The parts were as described.

My Renix Comanche has the dual TPS. The Fuel injection uses 0-5v and the TCM uses 5-0v.

another idea for a transfer case video - JK NP241 case compatibility and swapping with older jeeps, and also GM transmissions (for "LS" swaps)

Usually in my Experience it's always a Shift Solenoid or Solenoids that are bad and not the TCM.

01 to 98 isnt Renix to Chrysler. The issue is the Renix/AMC aw4's to Chrysler

Ok so rookie mistake I put a 96 transmission in a 98. There's one plug/connector different. Could this work swapping a 96 tcm into the 98 ?
That’s actually a great question that I can’t answer. But I will one day.

Find the pinout for both and get the correct connector...

I run an '86 ecm in my '84 chevy because converter lockup is sooner and the '86 reports more PID's.

Tcm between 2/4wd should be the same. Just know which year you need.
