Can I Upgrade To The Later CV Axles In A Renix Axle? Let's Find Out!

- To my knowledge this hasn't been attempted. The older 1984-1990 Jeep Cherokees use a different front axle setup in many ways. I wanted to cover the axles to the 1991-2001 axles without changing much to make it possible for everyone else to copy what I do to make them work out. Little speed bump but watch to see what happens. Enjoy!!
Axle part numbers. Oreilys Precision CH8220 and CH8221
Conversion seal - Precision 471765
The most genuine jeep stuff on the tube. Period.
I appreciate it!!

Hey, we appreciate you😎☕
The thumbnail shots at the end😂
Vanna White would be proud
reminds me of Mr. Bean LOL.
Posing🎯😂
Dex is a good human😎
The one thing I really liked about the cad axle was you could weld the diff, but still drive it on the street. When not in 4wd it drove the same, in 4wd you were fully locked.
Thank you so much for this video dude!!! my 89 Manche is getting a spartan locker in the front, and A friend of mine gave me nearly brand new(487km's) CV's and hubs when I bought his v8 steering stuff. So ive been beating my head looking how to make this work. You are a god amongst men
Glad I could help out!!
Call me crazy but I LOVE the look of the old xjs and mjs with the clear coat all faded like that, Idk why but its just the patina that you can't replicate, if you see that you know its a real survivor, and the nostalgic look gets me
Figuring out cool shit yourself is one of the best feeling out there. Good find! My buddy could use this info
The 87-89 axles use what you call the Renix bearing. The hubs, brakes and knuckles changed in 1990 to the current Chrysler style. 90-99 used the one hub, short snout, and the 2000-2006 used the later with larger snout. You can swap the knuckles on any D30 from 84-06 XJ, MJ, YJ, ZJ, TJ WJ (WJ has a few other differences to deal with).
One good note about the 84-89 knuckles is that the bearing hubs are rebuildable as the bearing have their own inner and outer races. The 1990 and up, use the inner spindle as the inner race so therefore cannot be rebuilt.
Hands down MY FAVORITE RUclips CHANNEL thanks dex
you never fail to amaze me with your hack-job skills. loved the HVAC tape and red lock-tite. thumbs up for creativity. 😂 @ 30:16
Thank you very much! It’s who I am 🤣
@@dexjs You do this well,,VERY WELL🎯😎☕
( one of these days, I will be contacting you, and see if you have a few pieces/parts for my

Dex that's a pretty wild swap 😮 I think it's awesome you try this stuff and share it with the rest of us 💪👍👍
I really enjoy it and glad it helps yall out
I like the dexj rebrand.
Comanche is visually drawing to the eye for me I can't explain it.
Good job getting it together.
Always enjoy ur vids!
Some of my Wheelin buddies used to run the CV’s on the regular D30, to save the ball joints. They won’t wad up like a u-joint axle & pop the ball joints on the trails. Not as strong! But, saver never the less.
Great point! That’s exactly what I tell people myself!
That is really cool. Well maybe we will see more of that one. Thank you for all your videos.
The back spacing is different to center the balls in the cv joint as compared to the u joint, the bearings for the xj/mj with cv shafts are properly spaced for a cv axle.
I cant believe it worked. I'm getting older and tired of pounding ujoints. Next time I'm going this route
Very Glad To Learn something New Everyday and this was it !!!!👍👍👍
Loved the irritated flash light flick. 😆 🤣
When the time comes to replace the axle joints on my 05 LJ, I'm going this route.
damn I just went to a junkyard to pick up grand cherokee axle shafts wtf?!?! I needed this video at the exact right time because I noticed the hubs were not fitting in place so thank you so much
A true genius at work
We welded the front diff on the axles because you could disconnect the axle.a true 4x4 when locked in
Hey Dex, I've done the conversion on mine last year, so far it has been ok, especially at 70-80 mph
The thumbnail shots are the best part of the whole video. The info is great but that ending was awesome. 🤣😂
Not sure what you mean..??
The ending was great😂😂. Cant wait to hear more about ujoints vs cv
Did the cv swap on the 94xj "the fn zebra" and went ahead and revuilt the stocks with new u joints as a backup set but if these work its a game changer! Will follow up.....thanks dex!
So glad I found your channel!
Edit: Dang, I was waiting for some hot u-joint talk. 😪
It’s on the list. Probably loose some subscribers over that topic
I wish i could meet an honest mechanic like this guy bc i have an awesome 80 model El Co/GMC Caballero that became my daily driver 6 years ago...
Yo! Best video I've seen in awhile...I was with ya the whole way...I'm pushin my 1st wj...very interesting! Love havin a laugh wit ya...too much! Keep turning that wrench...one love
Glad you enjoyed. I will sure do. Want to do more with the WJs soon
Could you change the wheel bearings to the newer style? That way you don’t have to take the tone rings off at all just throw the new cv’s in it
Yeah probably hub and maybe rotors. Was trying to stay on budget for the viewers!!
I am going to do this aswell thank you very much we need an update on the swap i want to see how the axle seals are holding up!!!!
Sure thing! It’s doing great.
Yes.
And you can use a Dana 35 locker on a front 30.
27 spline baby!!!
No the rotation is the opposite and they are called d30 and d35 because they are different axle sizes/carriers/bearings ect.
Napa had also carried Precision parts as like their mid range priced parts. I did not know that they had a warranty though. Knowing that the axles fit, now makes me wonder if the unit bearings will also fit.
Love it when you say, I'm looking to learn something new.
I enjoy it!!
Great video man. I live in alabama might have to come check out your junk yard buddy!
Gas Mileage and wear, Though the mileage is negligible. They could use a 2 u-joint front drive shaft vs the double cardan they used when they moved away from the CAD.
Even after 91 the YJs still used the CAD up until the end of it's production run. The TJ introduced the non CAD axle to the Wrangler line.
Ps the shafts will bottom out against the spider gear shaft and shorten the life of the cv joint and the wheel bearings without using the ptopper hub assembly.
I did it a couple years ago on my trail Cherokee when I had to swap in a early model high pinion I’ve used the life time warranty a couple times
I didn’t crack the dif cover, didn’t put in a new seal, and used the late model wheel bearings, never have had a problem
Win,win.
Thanks Dex.
My '87 came with CV axle from factory, if you take a look in the factory service or parts manual you can further understand why all this worked.
👍👍 I have never even thought about doing this. You should do a test video to make sure that it does good
Later video show him using them while Wheeling and he does not hold back
You need to put a axle seal in by the carrier. I used a xj seal and cut the outer shell off it
Best tec tip .I'm gonna use it .thank-you Dex
Couldn't you put the newer hub assembly in too
I am getting my first jeep. It's a 99 Cherokee classic. Hopefully driving it home at the end of this week. I just found your channel and started watching some.of.your stuff. You seem to have one hell of a collection!!! Do you sell parts? Or do you just fix your own stuff?
You rock, thanks for the videos
Thanks for watching!
I have an 04 wrangler with a cad axle in the front cause its what I had at the time just running Dana 30 ujoint shafts with 91-06 wheel bearings and hammer in cup seals to the tube works like a dream 🤷
You must got lucky. Seals are way different sizes
I swear, my "95" Sport has a odd size U-joint for the front shafts!? I looked around w/o measuring them and got all kinda answers, so? I went with a cv on the Dr side until I can get the bad u-joint apart. Btw, the end of the video was funny 😁
I was just debating if it would work my the 89 Cherokee I just picked up. One of my crew did the swap on his 96 on the trail when he snap his ujoint
That was great video I've been wanting to get rid of the split shaft thanks
Glad I could help!
Hay Brother I don't have free access to a bone anymore but I think a really good clip would be if there's a way to make maybe bronco 2 or maybe a range knuckle and hub assembly lock out hubs work on an xj What do you think???
It's interesting that it's on that vehicle I don't know what year that jeep is but mine's an 87 cherokee and it does not have that lock collar you spend one wheel it'll spin the drive shaft i'm only out of four wheel drive when I take it out of four wheel drive only my 2000 Dodge Ram has that slide collar
I’m in the process of doing this as you came out with this video 😂😂
I did the oppisite with my wj and had custom inner shafts made by dutchman axles an went from cv axle to ujoint style was cheaper than rcvs
Always informative, live the VIDs
Wouldn’t a newer model unit bearing just bolt up instead of trying to make the old unit bearing to work
When the CAD on a Renix era axle is disabled, the 4WD light on the cluster will not light up.
If I have a non cad dana 30 it would use newer style wheel hubs not the thicker one like in this video?
Direct bolt in!
So it does use the newer wheels barrings sorry I want to replace my wheel barrings when I convert to CVS and don't want to pull a hub just to put it back in till new ones come in
I tried the swap with the newer hubs timken 513084 and my rotors wont fit its to small do i need 92+ brake rotors? @dexjs
Another great video, thank you Dex.
Thanks again!
Wish this would work on a YJ Jeep that’s pretty cool
Cant you just get the hub from a zj and just throw that on because they dont have as deep of a collar and it clears the abs ring cuz thats what i did with my renix Cherokee and there is no rubbing or binding as far as i know
I'm going to try it on my 1993 Cherokee.
Don't the newer bearings bolt into the renix era knuckles? Couldn't you just swap them in
Is the axle tube in a CAD axle weaker. Than a axle that don't have the cast section
Very interesting might try this on my 89xj it needs new ujoints. Thanks for making these videos
What a surprise see you on here I watch your RUclips also this guy is killer
@@NorthGaLk1968 Thank you sir! I agree
Glad to help y’all !!
My 95 yj had a hp Dana 30 with the CAD
So V8 ZJ cv axles or stock ujoint axles? Which one is better
I’ll explain one day soon I hope!!
That’s sweet I’m going to do this
I’ve heard you mention swapping to CV shafts before. Do you think that the CV shaft is stronger than the U-joints? and I mean the larger style ujoints that came in the Dana 30.
Is the axle joint pivot point the same between the 2? It looks like the CV pivots farther away from the wheel side than the U-joint. So if the pivot isn't directly inline with the ball joints, won't you experience binding?
Pretty sure I checked it against the two model hubs.
Hay dex I've heard of this swap or something similar. But didn't know of what to order or if it did or didn't work ?Will this work on a 88 jeep yj with factory axle housing ?. Should right ? Haven't finished watching can you post the part # or what to ask for please?? If you did thanks.
Couldn’t you just use the new style bearing/hub assembly? Mine needs new ones anyway.
Crazy question. I can't remember which video it was but you were doing a tour of your junk yard. I saw a Jeep Cherokee with a high top on it. Any thoughts on saving that Jeep if possible? I am just curious. I heard that was a really rare Jeep but I can't remember where I saw that at. Thank you for your videos I really enjoy watching them.
Yep turns out it’s like 1 of 100 made
Wouldn't it be easier to swap to the newer style hubs at the same time? That way you wouldn't have to do anything other than add the inner axle seal.
Agree but I try to keep videos on budgets. Not like big channels buying all new stuff.
@@dexjs
I totally get that. Either way we know you don't need to buy them because you figured it out.
Outstanding
instead of red lock tight use green its good for oils and bearings
The thin metal part is a water slinger.
why not swap the hubs out too?
good info👌are those axles tuffer than oem ??
Nice
Cool video thanks for sharing
My nephew is doing a manual swap on his 97 Xj and needs too buy some parts , manual ECM and maybe some pedals whats the name of your place where he can hopefully order some stuff sir , u must have a few parts he needs outta all those XJ's 🤣😎
Is that a Dana 35 or 44?
I’ve got a question maybe even a good video for what seats fit what years in xjs but my main question is do 84-01 back seats fit universally between years
I think 84-94 and 95-01 but I’ll add it to my list to see what works.
great idea poor mans RCVs
I did this years ago but used ujoint axles. Not the cv.
wonder if there is a way to do ram 1500
Possibly a dumb question but I'm gonna ask anyway. I have a lunchbox locker in my dana 30 in my XJ, am I still able to run those cv axles?
Yeah no difference at all.
@@dexjs Thank you goodsir!
They make redi sleeves,
If these snap, can it still be driven ? At least to the nearest tow truck . 😉
Any reason for not using the newer unit bearings
Just for the viewers learning purpose.
Very informative
Love the ending!! 🤣
nice job!
Shop press?
How are you going to warranty it after you pound the tone ring off it brotha!
I saved them to re install!!
Genius
I like that Comanchee . No nice cherokees/jeeps in our location that’s under 7k
When a cv bust it won't bind up and pop a ball joint out
I try to preach that!!
@@dexjs I found this out the hard way
seriously learn something new on this channel. hack job or not not everyone has the funds or shop to do things "perfect". always looking forward for next vid. should do joint vs cv
