wow now i understand why photographer need a good assistant. This assistant know is job and he do it well. Good jod guys (sorry for my english i speak french)
“He just has hops!!” Lol these are some crispy photos!! I’ve been looking for a good video to help me get starting with a basketball team as their team photographer and this helps me a ton!! Appreciate you!
All I can say is WOW ! ! ! So that is how its done. Thank you Jaren and Gabe and your staff for sharing these BTS videos on technique. I am going to save this to watch over and over. I can't wait to get the chance to practice taking shots like this. I am good friends of the local high school wrestling coach so maybe I can borrow a couple of mats.
This has been phenomenal! As a student of photography - seeing a full athletic shoot is so rewarding and educational. Now for questions on your light and camera settings 😁
@@byuphoto well, i know you do mostly sports journalism videos, but I would like to see more topics about the business end of it.. contracts, pricing, getting jobs, stuff like that. I saw some videos elsewhere about real estate contracts that I got tremendous value from.. and I think it would be awesome to get your take on it..
This has been awesome to see how a major university photographs their athletes. Question though, what are your settings on the camera and strobes as you do studio pictures like this?
This is incredible and I can’t stress it enough how much good information there is on this channel, even if you’re not a total beginner! I am wondering about his iPad “tethered” setup, I am guessing it’s using the camera’s wifi, but the app doesn’t look like the Canon app. Care to share more about that process? And I am guessing the iPad is just being AirPlayed to the TV? Thank you so much!!!
Loved the video. Question: When you said "Free focus", are you in manual focus, setting your focus to a spot and then setting the camera to something like F8 to make sure you don't miss focus? I had to laugh because you said the same thing I do when trying to get the kids to do some movement..."don't get hurt". I can't image what the coach would do to me if one of the kids pulled a muscle. LOL
Sorry for the confusion, I'm actually using auto focus and I'm tracking focus on the athlete at all times. Most of the shots from this video were shot with the 70-200mm lens at F/5.6 1/200 sec - ISO 250.
Thanks a lot for sharing with us the BTS, it's really really useful. I don't have as many lights as you do, and was wondering if instead of using 4 lights behind the white fabric, I could get a similar result with two 600 W lights each with a 6 foot umbrella (one next to the other). What do you think about this "solution"?
Absolutely, I'm a big believer of making what you have work. You might be able to get away with just one light, but try to keep it a good distance away from the subject. If you are shooting football make sure that it isn't too high so that light will get inside the facemask.
@@byuphoto I do mostly basketball, and I was looking for a new set up to get more dynamic shots; because I could see some blur on the hands and sometimes the ball. I'll try with two 600 as the main on one side, two 400 as rim light and a 200 as fill light. Thanks for the quick reply!
Our graphics designers are usually doing cutouts and they prefer working on black. We have some white trim on our uniforms so I works better for us. We work with the designers on each shoot to see what works best for their needs.
@@byuphoto got it. I think that’s something that I’m trying to consider more since we are trying to do more with designs that involve actual cutouts. And do you only light the player and not have any kind of light on the background itself?
@@MDFariasMusic Correct, We try to keep any light off the backdrop, but the edge lights are key to give a good line of separation from the athlete to the backdrop.
@@byuphoto thank you a ton for responding and answering so many questions. I've been trying to put into practice a lot of the things you've shared recently and I definitely feel its making quite a difference in how i approach doing photos for sports.
Is a key light necessary? I have done intro videos for sport but am new getting into photo. The budget i am working with allows for the Profoto D2, and 2 continuous lights to use as “hair lights”. Do you recommend that I use these hair lights or use them as key light s. Great, very informational channel
I would use the d2 as key, usually you will need the most power and control out of the key. But you can switch it if your continuous lights have enough juice.
On this shoot here are the settings - Canon R5 - RF 70-200 2.8 - 1/200 Sec - f/5.6 - ISO 250. We didn't use HSS, It is the flash duration that freezes the athletes, check out our video on this at: ruclips.net/video/iybYU09-TaI/видео.html
Dave and I have been working together for long time and we realize what we create is a collaboration, we usually are on the same page before the shoot, but once in a while I will make adjustments or try something different. The athletes don't have a problem with taking direction from either chef.

Incredible coaching the talent. Appreciate the behind the scenes. I'm amazed at how fast your tethered connection is.

Do you always shoot in studio in front of a black backdrop? How do you determine if you want it shot in front of black, white, or a different color?

The key is the 20x20 fake silk, but the fill light is a profoto 10 light inside a 6" Profoto Zoom Reflector.
Well, guess I won’t be able to pull that off in my home studio..😅
Hello again, I have another question. What software are you using to wirelessly send the photos you're taking to the TV for review?
It is the shuttersnitch app, using an iPad pro which mirrors to an apple tv. We have a video on the setup coming out in December.

How many times can you say “good” on a shoot?

One question: is your assistant part of your team, or someone responsible for the football team?
The graphic designer is art directing the photo shoot, we work together in the athletic department.

And an endless budget
Great work!
