I remember seeing Spy Kids 3D in theaters, and the 3D effects only happened when the main characters were also wearing 3D glasses. Dumbest thing ever, but I loved every second of it.
One incredible detail you guys didn’t cover: In Astartes when they shoot the guy possessed the Captain’s cape actually blows backwards due to the force of the gun as it shoots.

It's REALLY BAD when one dude working at home over the course of several months can make a better animated short film series than major studios with dozens of people.
well, here's the thing, he's his own boss, any changes and creative directions is in his own discretion in a studio, your art director and maybe even the executive above will demand revision also, his clip is mostly in 3D with, albeit great character model but still not many of them, once he got it done for the first episode, it's not that hard to reuse assets story is kind of different for a 2D tv series and lastly, most studio dont have several months for an episode, they'd be lucky if they have a month to do one episode
I think the "several months" part really is the key here. Major studios are sometimes given only weeks to do a major scene. Even with dozens of people working on it, they still need to make sacrifices to get the product done on schedule
He has actually been working on them for at least 2 years. At some point the RUclips channel was hacked, so the upload dates on the RUclips videos right now are inaccurate. When you consider it took over two years for about 10 minutes of footage I think that puts it into a more realistic context. It's still amazing for one guy, but it definitely took more than a few months to get it done.
Seriously! It shows that CGI artists are really good at what they do but it’s the studio exec and/or director who doesn’t know what they want or doesn’t give them enough time to do a good job. It shows that the people who are running the studios in Hollywood have lost all creativity. Example: Indy 4 & spy kids.
Now that I've been learning blender I actually understand what they're saying when they talk about displacement maps. Love this channel so much, keep it up guys !
So, on the topic of that whole "things flying at the screen in 3D movies" gimmick that they mentioned for Spy Kids 3-D, I thought I'd share an interesting anecdote about a similar shot in the IMAX Space Station movie from 2002. There was one shot where wanted to film a Soyuz launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, perhaps to take maximum advantage of the 3D effect with some smoke and debris flying past the camera. So they installed the camera in what they thought was a blast-proof box on the ground, some distance away from the launch site. Well, the rocket lit and large chunks of either rock or concrete started to fly past the camera. But at some point, one of those pieces of debris flew at the camera in its box, smashed through the blast-proof glass and hit the right lens of the camera. Everyone in the audience gasped and many took their glasses and honestly, I did too because it really looked like it was my right lens that had shattered into 4 chunks and started falling out of its rim. The effect was spectacular for the audience, but disastrous for a lady who was in charge of the camera and in the DVD commentary, she said: "well, I thought I might as well stay in Kazakhstan, because I had just destroyed a very expensive IMAX camera." Turns out, shortly before the launch, someone else had put just one extra filter in front of the lenses, I guess for better colours. And that last layer of glass apparently made enough of a difference for the camera it self to survive. So the reason that effect was so convincing is that there was, in fact, a piece of glass just in front of the camera's actual lens that had shattered. So that's one case where this effect was completely for real rather than made for the film. But I wonder if it may have influenced the decision of the Spy Kids movie to add a similar shot. There's roughly 1 year between the movies, so I don't know if that would be even possible though.
YEdwardP i remember that oh my god!! the scene with the fruit flying around the space station always stuck out to me because i remember reaching out to grab it bc everyone else did the same thing and my hand legit went through the fruit like a hologram it was insane Edit: honestly bro bless you for commenting because i never stopped thinking about that movie all these years and could not remember the name of it
Well, Rodriguez is, over everything else, a visual guy. There's a reason he worked with Tarantino, they both love cinema, so taking inspiration from that shot wouldn't be a far stretch. Rodriguez, during this, was experimenting with the Cameron/Pace Rigs (the same beam splitter or mirrored kind Cameron used years later on Avatar). So, he mentions, there wasn't a clear workflow for stereoscopic 3D effects. If you watch that scene in 3D, you'll notice the brains have the full 3D pop out effect, but the crack is laying on the screen plane, on both eyes. The point you make, about being on only one eye, would actually make it a lot more convincing and fix the entire shot. Sometime ago, I bought a dual pack Bluray 3D of Spy Kids 3D and Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D, and is interesting to look for all this stereoscopic nitpicking now we have full color 3DHDTVs. The CG camera doesnt always match the real 3D camera, multiple layers of 3D effects are switched, making some background layers appear in the foreground, all thing nowdays could be easily fixed with the original data, on premiere or even Sony Vegas.
In the movie "Anaconda" near the end of the film, as the characters are escaping , the footage of the boat leaving is reversed, and you can see the waterfall flowing backwards.
Possibly the greatest space battle ever put to film. Prior to Rogue One, I would have said Return of the Jedi was the best, but RO is fundamentally a (mostly) superior version of what is, conceptually, the same battle in RotJ.
Really taking a critical eye to the effects of Spy Kids, it gave me chills of embarrassment on just how ridiculous it was. But you let me remember what made me love the movies even to this day: Because of how awesome it is to watch!
Someone has to be a real kill joy to say Spy Kids is to childish whens it’s based on the imagination of a kid And I’ll still watch them even today... except for the fourth one because that one was not as good
I remember enjoying it with complete sincerity as a kid, without any awareness that it might be hilarious to my dad and the other older people in the audience.
I’m not sure if you’ve done this yet but you should 100% do Death, Love, and Robots! It’s the coolest Netflix show with crazy crazy good CG. I would love to see you react to such a great series.

Of course Patreon takes a cut (I think) and he has all the costs needed to create these things and be self employed, but still, a lot of money - But he definitely deserves all of it, amazing work!

Fun fact: Danny trejo is actually machete in this movie. As spy kids is actually in the same universe as machete. Confirmed by Rodriguez too. So he’s just a badass uncle

Would love to see them react to Catwoman with Halle Berry. It's a masterclass in terrible CG animation... basically the polar opposite of Astartes. Bonus points if they also check out the movie's infamous basketball scene. Liam Neeson's fence-jump from Taken 3 looks like a oner in comparison.
The Astartes guy does have MoCap, he demo'd it on his patreon a while ago. I'm pretty sure you actually used part of the clip where it's just the grey model but I can't remember.
THE EXPANSE, specifically: - Alex Kamal's solo scenes in Here There Be Dragons, ep. 211, drinking AND "ring" planning. - Retrieval of the Nauvoo in ep. 304. - The shaft ascension/chase scenes in ep. 313. - And the unassisted landing of the Rocinante in ep. 401.
Interesting detail: for the big "heroes standing together" shot at 11:53, they couldn't get everyone on the same day. They ended up shooting the blocking and timing separately, then splicing it together in post. Rodriguez was delightfully transparent about the creative process he went through making Spy Kids 3!

Not sure if you know but it's based off the Warhammer universe. They're getting a few shows in the future-- Angels of Death & Hammer and Bolter, both have trailers. 40k is really cool and I recommend you check it out. I was immediately disappointed by that and I didn't know why. But then it triggered a long forgotten memory, and I had to get my fix. I have rectified the problem now so I won't miss it again.
Wasn't the premise of the movie that they are in computer game/simulation. It makes sense to make it look like computer generated graphics, instead of been photo realistic.
They reviewed Spy Kids 3D but not any of the simulation scenes from the movie?... I assumed that's why people were recommending it, as opposed to the random robot sequence in the real world.
I just want to say that I really love all of your videos, yes I am a subscriber, and every video you guys put out is gold! But the thing I truly love about you guys and your videos, is that when you are talking about CGI and everything that goes into it, you don't just say the technical jargon about the process of computer animation and what goes into it, you actually explain what things are, how they work, and why they are done for specific reasons. And that to me is amazing! You're not just showing us stuff, you are teaching us and I think a lot of people can learn things from you guys. Especially if they want to get into the industry of computer animation, or stunts. And I just want to thank all of you guys for that! I've always Incorporated teaching and explaining while I'm showing guys that I work with how to fix or repair something. I'm a chief engineer of a hotel and when I get new guys in the maintenance department that don't know a lot, I take the time to explain to them and show them exactly how things work and why they work that way. So if they were to ever leave they can take that knowledge with them for future jobs. Keep up the great work guys! And keep on teaching future hopeful generations of people.
I believe Gavin Free did the slow Mo on that. I'm sure that he may be willing to turn up as a guest if you reached out to come up with a larger project that tickles his fancy.

I love how they never actually criticized or broke down the Spy Kids visual effects. They just acknowledge it was a bunch of friends getting together to make a kids movie, and then they just smiled and giggled at the visuals. I grew up with those movies, so honestly, as cringy as they are in hindsight I appreciate that level of respect so very much. Thanks, Corridor, that meant a lot.
Right, bad effects doesn't equal bad movie. A movie can be charming and entertaining with cringy effects.

It's REALLY BAD when one dude working at home over the course of several months can make a better animated short film series than major studios with dozens of people.
Amen to that, bro.
well, here's the thing, he's his own boss, any changes and creative directions is in his own discretion
in a studio, your art director and maybe even the executive above will demand revision
also, his clip is mostly in 3D with, albeit great character model but still not many of them, once he got it done for the first episode, it's not that hard to reuse assets
story is kind of different for a 2D tv series
and lastly, most studio dont have several months for an episode, they'd be lucky if they have a month to do one episode

The effect was spectacular for the audience, but disastrous for a lady who was in charge of the camera and in the DVD commentary, she said: "well, I thought I might as well stay in Kazakhstan, because I had just destroyed a very expensive IMAX camera."
Turns out, shortly before the launch, someone else had put just one extra filter in front of the lenses, I guess for better colours.
YEdwardP i remember that oh my god!! the scene with the fruit flying around the space station always stuck out to me because i remember reaching out to grab it bc everyone else did the same thing and my hand legit went through the fruit like a hologram it was insane
Edit: honestly bro bless you for commenting because i never stopped thinking about that movie all these years and could not remember the name of it

Jacob Buttarazzi en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Station_3D here’s the wikipedia page for the documentary short
