My favorite Steve Merchant line is when he was on the Norm MacDonald show and at the end of the episode he said “This saves me a trip to my senile uncle”
One of his very best lines. The problem with Karl is that he's so funny he has about 30 one liners which are comedy gold which you could make a case for each being number one.
I think steve provides a large amount of the humour in these old shows, i think if you took either him or karl away there would be a lot less comedy as the 3 of them work perfectly together.
It's short but so unbelievably quick and sharp lines like "play it again" that Steve is just so good at! His brief interjections are such an underrated but amazing part of all Ricky, Steve and Karl's audio material.
Does anyone know of a similar dynamic for a podcast? Running out of these but they are just so funny. I also think david mitchell would be a good guest appearance with these three haha
@Johan Hansén i sorta decided that there aren’t, you’ve got people like Seth rogan who just talk about a reddit post to some nodding idiot for an hour, or you’ve got some people who just talk and laugh together but rarely say anything particularly funny, even if they do its like one thing in an hour. so non of that works for me. Where as xfm just constantly laughing even on the 10th rewatch..

Once I found the XFM files and subsequent podcasts back in 2007, I was absolutely hooked. Can't remember how it came about but it's the thing I go back to time and time again, it just never gets old and I can almost lip-sync every show, it's pathetic. I just love it. They're a perfect trio. Ricky provides the hype, outbursts and the risqué button pushing. Steve provides the more considered and clever quips, one-liners and unexpected comedy timing, and Karl...well, Karl just opens his mouth and gold pours out. Absolute peak ridiculousness, it's insane how this lightning was captured in a bottle like this.

Can never tell with his Manc accent whether he's called it song as a phrase or songs of phrase. It's obvs the second one but genuinely sounds like he's saying the first sometimes🤣
