  • This '69 Porsche 911 hot rod is just so good...and is, in fact, 100% better than the super rare Porsche 964 I just sold.
What I love most about this Porsche 911 hot rod is just how engaging the driving experience is. Without question it requires skill and practice to get the most out of this car.

I'm looking for a top-drawer 69 coupe, not quite a show car, but a fine driver. The pickings are slim with Singer and all the other refitters out there. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Love the car Will - great colour & with a few minor changes will be mint! Personally I love the minilites but its your car so you get to choose wheels - that’s the way it should be.
Blue tach is probably too much - the look & retro appeal of the gauges is one of the cool things about long hood cars I reckon.
Enjoy! Oh & looking forward to the next vids on this one.

Congrats! Welcome to the long hood club! Love the 2.8 MFI and the fact the car does not have flares added to it. I would love to know what that drives like compared to my ‘71 911E with the 2.2 MFI. Personally If you are going to change any of the gauges I would go to the green gauges that came in the very early 911s but it’s your car, do as you wish!

Beautiful car. Congratulations. Love the blue. It already being a restomod, you could keep going and customize it to your taste. Nothing wrong with that, but I would keep it as original as I can with the refurbishing. This cars are museum pieces. Not that you will, but originality will help with a resale if you decide to go there down the road.

Good looking blue, but adding blue in the Tach is too much for an older 911, todays cars seem to have that change fit the car but keeping it black fits the car so much better. IMO of course.

Congratulations, I love the car and look forward to following your progress. I love mini lites I had them on my old MGB and they looked great. However they don’t look as good on the 911. I would swap them out too. As for the tachometer I would do it. I love that blue and a little of it on the interior would set it off. Just my opinion. Thank you for spending your time putting this channel together I have really enjoyed getting to know these cars.

Awesome purchase! I had a 1970 E that my father and I autocrossed and put many years and miles on. My dad bought it in 1980, I foolishly sold it in 2003. I am not a fan of body match gauges. That’s just not 60-70s aircooled Porsche but to me. I think a 10k scale and an updated redline would look good.

  • @rajdhaliwal607

Awesome car. I’d definitely have the blue tach done to match the car. I’d even have the seats replaced like you mentioned but period correct lookalike leather ones with blue tartan (like you did on the 993 initially). I would even go as far as adding an additional mirror on the right has side to add a bit of symmetry to the look of the car. It’ll be interesting to see what wheels you have in mind for this car, so I’m looking forward to that reveal. I’m looking forward to seeing the mods you have so don’t keep us waiting too long 😉

I drive a 2.4 MFI and it’s an absolute joy to drive. Now I wonder how a bumped up 2.8 MFI is like!
I suggest before you even start personalizing this car or choosing to paint the tach Ossi Blue you may want to decide on a theme or a concept first so everything ties together aesthetically & mechanically.
After that tweak the all important suspension based on your personal driving style and intended use like torsion bar size combo, spring plates & bushings upgrade, shock absorbers, etc.
I’m happy you made the decision to buy an Early and a hot rod at that. It’s a long & gratifying journey and you will make plenty of videos for your fans like me to enjoy!

Congrats on this wicked score. Looks like a ton of fun. I am with you on the wheels. Erik will whip the breathing/spark into shape as well and sanitize the the look of the engine compartment. Refresh the gauges to a clean, sports purpose look, but the rev counter in a "special color" is a bit too "Singer want-to-be" in my opinion. I am sooo happy for you and I am excited to see how you make this machine your own!

Awesome ride Will. I’m gonna say “no” to the blue tach…I think you may tire of it eventually. Heading down to GSO after the fourth. Was thinking of driving my SC down from Montreal, but 18hrs seems like a lot with no a/c in July. Not sure…kind of on the fence on that one. Cheers and congrats again; if I ever trade in the SC it would be for a long hood! Look forward to your driving experience videos and comparisons with the G-body.

Awesome car Will. Congrats on the purchase. Prefer the look of the black gauges, but it is just personal preference as I never really gravitate toward colored gauges.
Minilites don't bother me, but there are lots of options that would look great, so looking forward to seeing what change you make there. Same for the seats. Maybe just change the inserts if they are comfortable. Pepita inserts would look great.
Agree on vented rear quarter windows. Bet it cools the car nicely as well.
As for cars and coffee... Would definitely hold its own there. An interesting car and looking forward to the backstory.

Love that 912 to be honest, I agree on the wheels though. I’d run some Fuchs like the rs had, but I’d run some white face gauges it’d pop pretty good. You could always do some blue lighting for the gauges as well too, but it’s a gorgeous car congratulations on the score.

Great find! Love the car. On the gauges, I wouldn't do the blue, but it's your car. If you want it, do it!! As an alternative, have you considered any of the late 80's ruf designs? They were a little retro in style in my opinion. Hard to go wrong whichever you choose.

Congrats on the car the silhouette and blue color look oh so nice. I would have those gauges refurbished to original specs to freshen up the interior focusing more on getting the seats right. Not sure on the look of that shifter...does CAE make an optional shifter for that older Porsche? Wheel wise I'm sure you're going to go with either a set of gold or a chrome. Looking forward to see the progress 💙 🔧🏁

I drive a 911 T 1969 signal orange not so hot like yours but 2,2 original engine with inox ssi, front bucket seats and black momo prototipo…super fun to drive and I love to keep it mint. Yours in ossi blu is super, I personally would prefer 15” fuchs wheels and viper stripes in white or cream and round number plate on doors and hood…but they’re just inspirations…I think you have plenty of race period correct ispirations out there…
Final sexy touch would be rear rs arches but on a narrow original body I understand it’s pretty invasive…just talking about it 😅

I went through the car in my head as you showed it and I picked out the same changes I would make, and it was everything as you stated! Clean up the motor and engine compartment, wiring etc., new seats, new wheels, fresh guages. 😎 I get where you are coming from wanting to keep the vintage...yet, tidy it up. I would consider possibly dry ice cleaning the under carriage if your taking the motor out for cleaning. But they have ways to keep the patina. Oh btw, regarding the guages color change, I would leave it, but provided it's not overdone I could see a pathway, singer style center. It would look nice, personal choice though.

Cool car and great color! You need an early-style tach that goes to 8k with a redline in red, not orange. Where the redline should be depends on your engine build, but most likely more than the current 6500! What you have now is a later G-model tach for an SC. And no, don’t make it blue. 🙂 By the way, MFI is the best for an early 911 and once it’s dialed in, you shouldn’t have any problems. Check that it’s not too rich, a common issue that will lead to fuel-oil dilution. Enjoy it!

Please don't do the tach face in blue. To me, it would really cheapen the look of the car. I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

I didn't hear any shout out's to Charles Stanley and Rotor Supply, but i'd say he's helped you make some great purchases! Anyone who actually reads these comments should reach out to him for help with your next air cooled Porsche purchase.

Stay tuned. Charles and I are doing a dedicated collaboration video in which he will be talking us through the backstory on the car along with walking us through the build story during his ownership.

The blue tach is a little overkill. I’m a fan of minilites but in a natural alloy finish. I am curious as to what wheels your getting

Hi Will. My biggest bit of advice for you having watched many of your videos of you burning up money on decisions you then change your mind on. Live with the car, go to your various car meets and run outs, and as an owner of a longhood, you’ll now view their mods through different eyes, of what you like and don’t like. Take your time making your mind up. But please don’t do stuff that isn’t easily reversible. It’s not a 993 living in a world of singer style mods where anything goes. Longhoods require a different level of respect and modification IMHO.

@@Rennthusiast good luck with it. I have a ‘72 running 2.7 MFi pushing 250bhp at last dyno, but I’m going to detune it a bit. Really think about OEM+ for this car. I really wouldn’t be putting 16’s on it and bet you’ll remove them. Some nice deep six or 7R replicas on the back, or any of the early 15 fuchs would be better than a set of 16s. Please do drive her and understand her before chucking money in to mods that you typically see on backdates - you’ve got the real deal, keep it honest.

Again, thank you. My goal is to keep this car true to its’ vibe and roots. I really don’t like the 15’s and the tires from a handling standpoint. I have gone up 1” on all of my cars and have been happy with the result, both aesthetically and from a performance perspective. The rest of what you say I definitely agree with though.

That is beautiful. Love the color. Engine size is just right. Some people, I think, put too much engine in these hot rods. I would prefer MFI. I think carbs are more of a headache.
I don’t like the wheels or wheel color although minilites is a period correct wheel often split with Fuchs in the front.
I would be careful about getting too big wheels. The thick (vintage) sidewalls look right and help with the ride quality.
    Big no to blue tach.

What seat’s are you planning on?
I like the GTS Classics Monte Carlo or Granturismo. I personally would avoid any fixed back seat. Maybe some Pepita or plaid inserts.

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  2 года назад

I really want fixed back but I am not sure I can sit comfortably in them for long weekends in the mountains. I plan to spend long weekends in the car on drives, so comfort is key.
These seats look semi-period correct and offer the reclining seat back: www.classictouringseats.com/product-category/seats/lemans-s-type/
But then there are these which look killer and some guys find perfectly comfortable: www.classictouringseats.com/product-category/seats/rs-touring/
The real issue is I can’t easily find fixed back seats to test out before I buy a set.

Gorgeous car, I love the simplicity of it.
I would try to keep it in that spirit, very minimalistic, maybe with a set of steelies, more rally like, and I agree with John, 15” max, thicker side walls look so good on these older cars, maybe with some reedition pirelli tires, to give it a vintage feel.
Just my 2 cents! Very lovely!

i've watched 2 of your videos; 76 with the 3.2 and now the 69 with the 2.8. As a 15 year owner of a 2.2 70 E I'm wondering if you've ever experienced the wonderful 2.0 (that the 69 came with or a 2.2? You might be missing out on the purity of the early designs!!! Try one!

No blue tach. I think the guages look good in black and they all have a black background so one being blue would stand out abit.

Ok, coming from an owner of a 1970 911S - Restored by an excellent shop as also owner of a 1973 Carrera RS original -- the 1970 911S has been a nightmare to dial in the MFI and I've taken it to the best mechanics around the country that I know. In fact, I have it going to another specialist in Texas in a month. I've owned the car for years and I still have not had it right. the 1973RS 2.7 starts up like its new. I think the pre-72 cars are difficult. I am curious to see how yours works out.... Please let us know.

Will do. The car runs well as it sits today, but I’m definitely aware of how challenging it is to get right. Let’s hope it stays dialed in.

Will; beautiful car. Good luck with it. I have a question; as a fellow North Carolinian, I know we have to pay an annual tax based on our car’s market value. I’m just curious if they’ll give you some kind of exemption because of the car’s age, or will they hit you for current market value?

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  2 года назад

I *think* they have some sort of tax table that assigns tax value to a vehicle and the amount they tax seems to decrease with the age of the car.

    • @Brian9379C
      @Brian9379C 2 года назад

That is true, but I think they do recognize market value of antique/classic cars. My 1987 911 was previously assessed at a value of around $3,000 for two years, and then last year they upped it to around $30,000+. While I wouldn’t argue that they over-assessed it, they did suddenly recognize the value being a lot closer to reality than what they previously did. You may or may not be in store for a nasty tax surprise.

Do NOT change the gages. You are already putting new tires and seats, don't make it so Ebay-ready ... she already has that fantastic older 911 hot rod look.

Popping on over-run is the MFI not working correctly. Over-run solenoid not cutting fuel supply. IMHO early 911's only look right on 15" wheels .. Square 15x7 Fuchs look great. 16" Fuchs lips don't look right. Don't get me started about 17"s
