Sporting Lisbon had been without a trophy for 19 years, they were struggling financially, and had just sacked their manager after 6 months in charge.
They then turned to someone with only 10 weeks top flight managerial experience, Ruben Amorim.
Who is he? Why was he so sought after? How has he managed to turn Sporting’s fortunes around?

I'm expecting a lot of Liverpool fans watching this tonight.
😂😂 We're here
We will all start watching Portuguese league
True
What do you mean I am a Liga Nos connoisseur
You would be correct
"He's been linked to the Manchester United and Tottenham job but he wants to stay"
Wise man
hahahahaha
Its good to do it at as roma as they all to fight for
Now Tottenham has players that work hard and actually try but I’d avoid this MU at all costs they are great players with no tenacious personality on the pitch, if smth goes wrong they all despair😂
lol
and now hes going to villa
Hopefully this video sparks more interest by the fans abroad. Here in Portugal what he did in Sporting is absolutely insane. Not only did he won the league after 19 years, he did it with a very young squad, mainly from Sporting's academy. It's like he's playing FM irl!!
And it's not only from a results perspective he's being successful. He managed to truly unite the fans for the first time in many years, and I have no doubt he would have achieved that even if he didn't win the league. This guy has a bright future ahead
Well said pal - I agree with you 100%!
He will be the one who brings CL football to Wolves
is he like klopp? sounds like it. I mean he's setting his own legacy of course
@@MarkWTK yes, I'd say they are similar in communication skills and taking the best out of the players
@@MarkWTK Yeah I was thinking the same when I read that description. Klopp came from Mainz to Dortmund and won the league with a young team that produced a lot of later stars (Hummels, Kagawa, Götze, Lewandowski, Gündogan,...) and he did so by getting everybody behind his vision ("Gegenpressing"). Naturally this takes time and some transfers but man that Amorim is fast with getting his ideas on the pitch
Welcome to all my fellow Liverpool fans 😂
In my opinion comparisons are always unfair. In this case we are talking about two trainers from totally different generations with different behaviors. Let's hope he becomes Amorim, a great Portuguese coach.
Agree but I think amorim can suppress Mourinho
As a Portuguese he is a good coach but he only won the league because Sporting fail do qualify to europe league group stage and ended up haaving a rested squad that was very important to win the league
guilherme gajo estas a falar merda!
He’s already Amorim
@@mathewholman927 Have you ever been awarded for your humor? Nice 😉
I'm not a Sporting fan, I'm actually a Benfica supporter but I have so much damn respect for Amorim and what he's doing! I hope he has a very successful coaching career in the years to come!
Me too, and im also a Benfica fan. I love Amorim
Loving this new style of combining the classic Tifo animations with the stylized shots of the real world
He sounds like a perfect manager for Dortmund, inter Milan, Tottenham, or basically any ambitious team with strong academy
It's Ibrahim Sangare, isn't it?
Always has been
you start to be annoying with Sangare.
I'm a F C Porto fan and i can see that Amorin is improving at a fast pace, but he needs a few more years to develop more variety to his game with more options in his squad.
Who is here to check out this Amorim guy, after Klopp said he'll leave?
Been aware of him for almost 2 years. He’s my top pick to replace Klopp. Many similar qualities and shows a lot of promise.
the only similarity to Jose Mourinho is that he is Portuguese. This would be like saying is Graham Potter the next Brian Clough. It is a meaningless comparison based only on their nationality.
So winning trophies after years of droughts, beating teams when against the odds and having huge short term results isn't a similarity?
Click bait wangu
He is just an Portuguese Guardiola
@@itsnotmily You do realize that Mourinho took over a Porto team that had won 5 league titles in 7 years, right?
@@hugoumero9723 cap
to be honest, I didnt know anything about Amorim until 2 days ago, but of everything ive seen, including his strong english ability, tells me he would be the ideal klopp replacement. formation, personality, commitment to sports science. the ideal FSG coach
As a Porto fan I have to admit that his Sporting has made themselves a more annoying, and fierce rivals versus FCP. Really heated games. Also it’s Taça, pronounced with a soft c that makes the s sound not the hard c (k) sound. Appreciate your content of covering Portuguese football!
Phonetically you could say ‘tassa’ 💪🏻
unfortunately the Porto fans became more arrogant and whiny
Our players literally almost brawled with them after the 2-2 draw a few weeks ago
God dammit, now the cats out of the bag and everyone is going to want to take him away from us 😭
Just two things worth mentioning about this video: Taca is actually spelled Taça (with a cedilla) and it's pronounced more like "Tasa". And one thing that wasn't really mentioned but something that should be pointed out about Amorim is that his strongest suit perhaps aside from his tactical prowess is his ability to unify the locker room. After the attack on the training grounds by the Sporting fans that caused Bruno de Caravalho's downfall as a Sporting President, the Sporting locker room was completely tarnished (it was already bad before but got worse after that), Ruben Amorim was able to bring all the players together and make them all feel at home. All the players in interviews constantly mention that Sporting has one of the most enjoyable locker rooms they have experienced in their careers, so much so that players are competitive in training, but, when it comes to games, their will to win surpasses their need to play on the field (i.e. players don't complain about being on the bench).
Great video regardless!
Wasn’t mentioned? The whole video was about that
@@MakedonskoChojek lol ur right
@@MakedonskoChojek My bad, after rewatching the video, they did mention that ability of his. But the context behind what I said and what happened at sporting's tumultuous time was also important (and makes what he did last year feel even more impressive). The string of poor managing (not necessarily the managers themselves but how it turned out) Sporting had is almost a direct comparison to what has happened to Man United in recent times.
did you watch Ted Lasso, the TV series? sounds like him, a real life Ted Lasso
So glad to see an animated video. Just feels so smooth and gives a good story.
interesting watching this 2 years later as Liverpool are now tipping Amorim as their first choice now that Xabi has declared he wants to stay at Bayer.
Took you long enough to make this video but I'm glad you did. Amorim work here in Portugal is incredible. He really feels part of a new generation of coaches that prioritize communication and player well-being in order to strengthen their work on the pitch as a team.
Here's hoping he as a brilliant carrer in the future (after winning the quadruple with Sporting some time in the next few seasons).
I love their team, so many young promising talents
Abel Ferreira, Sergio Conceicao, Ruben Amorim, and Bruno Lage are all excellent coaches. I think that all have claim to be the “next Mourinho”. They all excellent organizational and tactical skill, and while Ferreira is more explosive in press conference, I think all these guys will speak there mind regardless. Personally, I would to Conceição be the “next Mourinho” but I’m a Porto fan.
You forgot about Nuno, even though his performance with spurs was very poor, he still a very good coach helping wolves promote and making them a mid table league teams just a season after promotion
@@yanuarandre6924 nuno is average
@@kjelvin4593 he is, that's why he mostly coach mid table team, but he really makes wolves into strong mid table team, he also coached by Mourinho while he is still player at Porto
@@yanuarandre6924 well he coach some big clubs to, like porto spurs and valencia.
@@kjelvin4593 prolly not used to a big pressure job, nonetheless his wolves journey were pretty great tho
Thank you for this brilliant video!
The ironic thing about all this is that despite his clear inspirations, Amorim is basically the anti-Mourinho when it comes to man management. He's always the first one to defend his players even when things terribly wrong. His press conferences are usually down to earth and he tries to avoid the off the pitch drama that is so prevalent in portuguese football. It's incredible how much he has been able to improve the atmosphere of a divided club.
Actually if anything, it is exactly like Mourinho especially when it comes to man-management. In press, after a loss he always made it about himself or the pitch or bla bla
So a Guardiola disciple then
@@atty.fernandog.madarcos8724 no
@@rockingttalent3666 Exactly. People think Mourinho is trying to make excuses by talking about referees or the pitch but he's just trying to shift the blame from his players.
@@rockingttalent3666 I disagree. Mourinho has repeatedly thrown this Roma squad under the bus, as an excuse for their failures. Even if it is true, this is not something that Amorim would do. He had the opportunity to do so, in the past, and he never did.
You should do a video on Sergio Conceição. If you think Amorim has been impressive, then imagine Sergio. The man is going for a 3rd league title without ever having a competitive squad since he joined Porto. Adding also to the fact that has reached the quarter finals of the ucl twice. He’s the first Porto manager that fans value more than president pinto Da costa. He’s holding that ship on his own. Without him Porto would be screwed big time.
This video looks amazing. I hope you keep this aesthetic
This is why I love Tifo!
Excellent video guys.
Great video as usual, what about a video on Celtic coach Ange Postecoglou... how he has turned Celtic around within 1 season is amazing and if you look deep into his background he has a real exciting philosophy and actually at one point early on was a failed coach but found his way to where he is now, its all interesting.
Finally a video on Ruben Amorim!
As a sporting and tifo fan, thank you 4 that 💚
No one can have mourinho's personality. Truly one of a kind
I think there is a caveat to be made for SCP success last season which was that they were only playing internal competitions. No Champions or UEFA Leage (knocked out on the playoff). This season with a better team they're revealing more deficiencies physically, with more injuries (they were the best team last year, but rest time is a factor). Amorim might be the next Mourinho, but Conceição has shown to be an amazing coach and anyone who cares should analyze the different rosters he's had and how he's been adaptable with his approach to fit the squad and the financial constrains FC Porto has been in.
Exactly. The same with Conte at Chelsea.
Having no European football makes it much easier
I love how his Sporting played against Ajax in the CL groupstage, and love to see the technical capabilities of this Portuguese team. I hope that Portuguese clubs in general will remove their defensive minded thinking. I want to see more players like Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, João Félix and Dani in football. Attacking, technical teams will always be remembered by football fans, and it is more joyfull to see :). So I will cheer for more Rúben Amorim''s :).
Defesa tbm é importante
Amorim has done a spectacular job, a Premier League move would be nice for him sometime in the upcoming years.
he's gonna coach us dawg if potter rejects us😭
Sounds like a great future coaching talent. We should be seeing him in the top five leagues in 2 years max.
He already is!
Portugal is already ahead of France
Probably Wolves 😂
Portugal is top 5

And trust me when I say Rulani is at the back of that.
Back 2 years later. I knew the PL was beckoning for this guy
I thought this was a video about Mourinho's revival at Roma hahaha. Glad to have been taught about another bright new coach instead!

Do a video on Abel Ferreira, Palmeiras' portuguese head coach in Brazil.
Uses Youth effectively, coached a team to knock off the usual top 2 in the league and gets the team to score an unusually high amount of times in the 90+ minute mark. Fergie with Aberdeen vibes from me I like it.
Is this the new Liverpool manager?! I certainly hope so.
Portuguese football is evolving at all levels, this is graet video also
Can't wait until the tifo album drops

I came here expecting the Portuguese coach of a Green and White team, but not Amorim, Abel Ferreira, Palmeiras' coach
Casa Pia are currently 1st in the Portuguese 2nd division!
Great video! Just one thing, the correct way to pronounce Taça is "tassa" not "taca". Cheers!
Football knowledge aside one thing I had learned from Tifo is that the special offer of 1£ a month for subscription for The Athletic doesn't have a time limit😂😂
Finally! Almost a year later after he won the title you notice him 💪
Mentioned Mourinho’s name for clicks. There will never be another José Mourinho.

5:41 this just shows what a coach guardiola is.... City scored 5 against the best defence
Well tbf, that was last season. Sporting's defense has been visibly worse this season, mostly due to concentration issues/inexperience.
But that obviously doesn't take away from City's brilliance.

@@Chels-ce4vihi mate i would say so. but only if he gets the players he wants because he doesnt change the tactic. So whit the right players he Will be more than ready to manager a club like Liverpool(although i dont like that idea ahahahaha)
Mourinho is called the Special One for a reason even though he called himself "A special one" what makes (made) him unique was his ability to break barriers in record time. People tend to forget that the man became both Uefa as CL champion with Porto in 3 years after being an assistant then after he changed English football forever on his 433 against the 442 then he went to Inter and won the CL being totally pragmatic. In a age dominated by high press and possession football of Barcelona, he defeated then without throwing a single punch and this is without highlighting his personality. Man genuinely is funny
Hot question if he went to a premier league side who he manage and how well do you think he do?
Conceição deserves a video on his own too because he manage to make a broke Porto competitive again

Great video, as always, but 'taca' is pronounced like "tassa", not "tacka".
Portugues não é Espanyol, mano.

Taça = "tassa"
it's not "taka"
To be fair , Tottenham would not be a good move for him. He can grow a few more years in sporting before thinking of going into a burning house like United or spurs. He could really damage his growth with a failed tenure in the premier league, and most likely with spurs he would probably wouldn’t even have the chance to compete in the champions league. Give him time. He has patience and is extremely calm , so I reckon he’ll make the right decision. Other clubs in the future might be interesting such as borussia Dortmund since he has excellent managing of young academy players and has that little star against more developed clubs, and it could be a good step up without having the England media tripping him.
Sporting Lisbon? I didn't expect Tifo to make this mistake.
Get over it. That’s what the team is known as by many abroad.
@@Jay-in6dl I am okay with it. Just stating my view that I didn't expect Tifo to do it. Cheers.

@@ankaramesi3824 Many fans try and stress that Sporting Lisbon isn’t the real name of the club, it’s Sporting Clube de Portugal. Doesn’t seem like such a big deal, but i guess it be weird to say something like London Arsenal or Glasgow Celtic
@@Jay-in6dl It is. But Tifo started being a channel with a massive respect for fans, players, clubs and leagues outside the UK. That involved serious research on topics as basic as the name of a club.
