Mercedes-Benz Citan Tourer - Kangoo With an A Class Face (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Mercedes-Benz Citan is a compact van based on the Renault Kangoo. Another sibling is the Nissan Townstar. At launch the Citan is available as the Panel Van and the people carrier called the Tourer. Later we will also see the Mixto with a 5-passenger cab and separated cargo space, as well as a long-wheel base version. Mercedes also announced the T Class, which will be a luxury version of the Citan, as well as the eCitan and EQT electric vans.
All this is badge engineering, but the front vaguely resembles the A Class, and rear lamps look like from the V Class. Everything in the middle is a generic compact van optimised for cargo space.

    @MarekDrivesENG
I like your review and I consider it really useful.
THX for your effort and professionalism.
I spent three weeks wandering around Zagreb/Croatia all middle class (Skoda, Peugeot, Citroen, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Renault, Dacia, Suzuki) car saloon's with SUV and checked literally every single car that could even (at least) close fulfill the needs of my family.
At the end, Renault/Dacia salesman concluded we should look a Kangoo.
It turned out THE ONLY Kangoo has almost all specs we wanted, but among them, at least it has all crucial (safety) specs.
And then, when I decided to compare Kangoo with its more expensive "twins" Nissan Townstar and Mercedes Citan (as I did with Toyota Proace City Verso, Opel Combo, Peugeot Rifter and Citroen Berlingo) I saw this video.
Because of the author's comment about the driver's position after folding the second seat row, I went again to the Renault saloon.
Situation with the driver's seat position IS NOT even near so dramatically bad, as the author resented by leaning forward, off the seat back and hugging the steering wheel.
Nobody is hugging the steering wheel like that when driving.
It is true, if you fold the second row of seats, you lose some driver space, and that is an ergonomic and even more a safety !!! flaw (because of airbag), but not as near as presented, particularly for the 175 cm tall person (leaned back with extended hands).
OK, the belly, as standard equipment of professional drivers, could be a problem, but you can work on that...😉
For my driving position (long legs) full folding of the second row takes 2-3 clicks of the seat slider, but if I remove headrests, as I always had to in my present car - Peugeot 307, I lose 1-2 clicks = 5 cm.
And, for me, that is really acceptable (a small) compromise.
I agree, for a transport car like this, for a 2 000 km trip, everybody would like the driver's position to remain the same.
But for a few hundred kilometers trip a few times a year, or for some home appliance delivery (10-20 km) it is a compromise everybody must accept.
There is a long version of Kangoo/Citan/Townstar, and I really hope that issue is not present in it, because of the longer front-rear wheel base/distance.
If you really need a more often, or daily use of the car with folded second row of seats, maybe you should buy a N1 = cargo version of this car or take the second row of seats out.
This is a passenger version of this model, with ability of folding second row seats from time to time.
IMHO, this car is intended for three kids families with two still in isofix seats, or company five adults daily commuting car with versatile options of occasional transport of larger loads that demands second seat row folding.
    I choosed Kangoo instead Citan.
    Even I drowe Peugeot 307 20 years (165 000 km), I don't expect I'll drive this one that long.
In a five-seven years we will see what will be actual.
Mercedes has 40 000 km service interval (Kangoo 15 000 AFAIK), but for both of them it is recommended to cut it in half, and If I'd drive that much (taxi driver or bussiness long distance transport car), I'd consider Citan, but for small mileage, and not so sure future, I think it is smart to choose cheaper option, with almost the same properties.
Mercedes seems to have nicer infotainment and steering wheel controls. It is quieter and better for drive (softer).
Kangoo has lower price, probably cheaper parts, annual service, insurance etc. a bit lower fuel consumption and LED front light.

I lost some weight since then :) I'll give it another try after facelift, but to me it's an unacceptable compromise in what essentially should be designed with versatility in mind.

Please don't tell me it is OK for you to stretch that much to reach the infotainment or A/C controls in Toyota Proace City Verso.
You are shorter than me (I'm 183 cm), and to me it is too far, farther than in any other car I tried.
Above all, don't tell anybody it is OK to place a door opening lever/handle behind the knee. When I wanted to get out of the Toyota, and realised I had to move inward my leg/knee to open the door, I went out of that car and never looked back.
What a moron designed that (part of the) car!?
How to "Dutch open" the driver's door? Right hand behind the left knee, and a proper hit in the steering wheel with the right ear?
BTW, the position of the right leg is too upward, and the knee outer bones are touching/leaning on the central ridge.
It become really painful after a very short time, and it seems to me as pure masochism to drive this car.
I wouldn't drive it even as a gift.
I'd rather put it on sale or give it to the enemy.

Actually I don't know why Mercedes persisted (persists) in its collabs with Renault, the latter is just making the former look bad. Where I come from people avoid the 1.3-litre versions of the GLA and B (which has a waiting list well into Q3 2022!) the moment they know it's a Renault-developed engine.
The previous gen Citan's interior was an example in how to pay for the Mercedes badge and get next to nothing...
