I can only imagine the frustration for the late James Horner. He must have made bank on this score, but he hated that he was so rushed to complete the score and had to plagiarize himself so much. Yet Hollywood and all the fans ate it up anyway and it landed itself as one of the greatest modern film scores of all time. Such a great bombastic score, Aliens was a LOUD movie.
@@dannylerchYou could give Horner all the time in the world and he’d still plagiarize himself. Not that he wasn’t still a genius and he certainly wasn’t the only composer to reuse cues from past works, but he really excelled at it.
I don't know, I like this version better than the original with the music starting when the elevator arrives. In the move, thescore starts around 0:13 and the elevator opens up in silence. I like the original idea of Horner as it gives such a menacing arrival to the elevator. Thanks for your work David! I wish Horner had more time working on Aliens 😁
You know, I’ve been told that this cue has been used in more trailers than any other piece of film score ever wittten………..but I have yet to see a trailer in which I’ve heard this. Well, not one in which I was consciously aware that it was playing. And trust me, since I learned this fact, my ears have been constantly on the lookout for hearing this piece when watching trailers, both old and new.
Well, try the trailer for the 1993 Macauley Culkin thriller The Good Son. It was everywhere, all the time. Used to make some movies or shows seem better than they were.
It's true, it was in a number of trailers, although in some cases there's also a bit of a Mandela effect involved too, where people heard music that sounded similar and thought it was the same piece, when they were actually hearing other promos deliberately emulating Horner's style. A good example of this could be heard in promos for The Puppet Masters (1994) and The Iron Giant (1999) which were original promo music that was very clearly imitating Horner. Some cite these examples as "slight variations" even though they were distinct and original. I'm sure there are probably many others I can't name that tried something similar. The first teaser to Alien Resurrection (1997) also did this and cheaply aped Horner's militaristic percussions into a piece of imposter promo music specifically for that teaser, and some people might think it was recycled from Aliens, but it wasn't. However, trailers for the films Apt Pupil (1998), Deceived (1991), From Dusk Til Dawn (1996), Ghost in the Machine (1993), The Good Son (1993), Lake Placid (1999), Man on Fire (1987), Minority Report (1999), Misery (1990), Nightbreed (1990), Timecop (1994), The Vanishing (1993), Volcano (1997), and of course Alien 3 (1992) all feature Horner's cues from Aliens.
Wow incredible, how do I give 10 upvotes.. I'm glad you realise you need to be going through a lot of Aliens tracks. I request "Queen to Bishop" next and then you'll have to do 'Newt is Taken' and "Face Huggers" at the very least.
Would you also do "Going After Newt", the big cue beforehand? *edit: I accidentally wrote "Ripley's Rescue" before, which is of course the other cue. I mixed up the titles. Sorry about that.
I'd also love to see that one. I really like the orchestration in it, with that crazy feral dance rhythm :) Maybe the best cue in the entire score after the main titles.
For reference, the 40 megaton blast that Bishop talked about would be equivalent to the Tsar Bomba exploding! The plum of smoke went into outer space and the blast radius was 25 miles!
Actually 40 megatons(although still impressive) is somewhat smaller than the Tsar Bomba, which is 58 Mt, or one can round it up to 60 Mt which is 1.5x the atmosphere processor; BUT remember that the one tested actually had its power reduced by half- If the full-scale version was tested it would've easily exceeded 100 Mt and might've even reached 120 Mt, which is 60% the force of the Krakatoa eruption!!
@@faisalmemon285 Of course it would. The derelict is a few hundred miles off to the east, beyond a mountain range, more than a day away of driving. If it were within 25 miles - they would stumble upon it within a week of planetfall.
They should use this in a trailer!
I see what you did there ;-)
It would cause me great *_Misery_* if they didn't. It's so good!

@@Shadowfax-1980 Did he plagiarize himself here? This is one of the best cues ever! It's been used in countless trailers for other movies.
Me - "Mr. Horner, you did okay"
James Horner - "I did"?
Me - "Ohh yeah" : )
Ok?! He did phenomenal!

0:00-0:11 They should've included this part in the film!
Those anvils!
The Anvils definitely made this piece!

1:21 I like that you kept the entire crescendo for this video when in the film, it was cut off during the explosion scene.

Gotta love those snare drums!
The ANVIL is the true watermark of this score
Me in music class trying to learn how to read notes.

Damn! I was hoping the Derelict would survive and in a future movie Newt would come back with some army pals to see if it’s been destroyed.

Thank you so much :)
Love this so much. But what the heck is happening at 1:57? Is there some kind of implied fermata or rubato over those three notes?
Implied fermata or rubato lol
Great Work, dear David!
YES!! Thank you!!!!
nice👏👍
