Those old column-mounted gear shifters beat modern floor shifters by a landslide. IMHO, they are much more convenient since they are right in front of you.
Man I LOVE the 80's Centuries. I love the dash design. Our old Mechanic used to drive a 1989, it was in horrible cosmetic shape, but he kept it running like new. It had over 300,000 miles when he got rid of it.
Thanks Kyle for these (nowadays at least) odd cars. It brings back tons of memories, because in the eighties it appeared that every second car was this type or its GM siblings. The Chevy Celebrity, the Olds Cutlass and the Pontiac 6000. Each one had their stylistic personality, they were quite popular in their segment and thus they held back the import invasion for awhile quite well.
This brings back memories for me. I had an 89 Century Limited for a while in high school. It was a nice car, ran great. I got it from an elderly relative and it only had 33,000 original miles back in 2006. I sold it a year later for a 99 Cougar. Century's are pretty good cars. Not real flashy or anything really ground breaking but still good dependable cars.
My first car. Dad bought it from the salvage yard and fixed it up. Drove it till I was about 20. Started 1st time, every time, in the South Dakota winters. I trusted Buick so much, my "upgrade" was to a '96 Skylark.
We had one of those! 87. loved it. my mother was in 2 huge accidents involving a produce truck and an 18 wheeler, and that thing held its ground. She had to have shoulder surgery, but that's a lot better than being dead.
I always associated American cars with V8 sounds, but I have learnt they made some mean sounding sixes as well after binge watching beaters by saabkyle and some others. This one has one of the best exhaust notes I've heard. Sounds like a GM New Look bus with Detriot 6V71. Both products of the General as it happens.
We had a 1984 Century, Los Angeles Olympics Edition, with all the bells and whistles. From 1989 to 1995. It was the car that got me to and from college. It had the 2 barrel Dualjet carb and a little 3.0 V6. Super good ride.
We sold it in 1995. Looking back, it had some issues that if they had occurred today, I would have gladly and easily fixed today (just due to my increased knowledge and experience with cars) . It was a nice ride.
I had a '89 Cavalier Z24 with that 2.8 but w/MPI w/ 5-speed manaul. My muffler rotted in that same exact spot 4 times in the 10 years I had the car. Usually left it off for several months before replacing it. Sounded so good.
jake mann yeah mhmm... i doubt that. You're just saying that to show your love towards this car but anyone who doesnt have the brain of a fish would pick whatever is more expensive. If it's your dream to own one of these or restore it or make a build then you could sell that lambo and end up with a 2 cent century, and a million other things. im done reading comment sections now... like The King said... enough youtube for today.
I own an 1988 century and it’s great, I’m 17 and it is my first car and I got it for 1600, it’s fun to show my friends since most of them don’t know a lot about cars and when they see it there always like “wow that looks just so old and cool” 😂
@@johnaldrich2074 I had a 1990 with the 3.1. They were more or less the same engine but the 3.1 had a little more guts behind the grunt. The 2.8 had a nice heavy/hammer type sound, but when you actually tried to lay into it, it ran out of steam very quickly.
I love those old buicks. Thats an awesome sounding V6. I actually like the older cars better. I do like how you have a great variety on here. Everything from a lamborghini to a old 60'd car. or even a John Deere :)
the 1984 and 1986 Buick Centurys are my favorite cars and I love them and I found a grey 1986 Buick Century and I like that car and it's the first vehicle I am going to get next year when I get my license
All of you guys are nuts! These were great cars, the best from GM in the 80's sounded great and were bulletproof. I owned an 84 Pontiac 6000 STE. One of the best cars I've ever owned. Kyle if you ever come across a mid 80's STE, without further adieu, you know what to do.
I think mine was a 1987. Everything was the exact same as that car. It was my first car after I graduated high school. I paid $860 for it. Never had any issues with it until I bought another car. I sold it to a guy who abused it and the transmission lost its forward gear and could only go in reverse. That car was super comfy. Paint was fading just like that one. All the older people I knew at the time, made a big deal about the "Body by Fisher" sticker on the car lol. Had a cassette adapter that allowed me to play my cd player through the stereo.
Couldn't agree more. I have a very mechanically similar '89 Cutlass Ciera I just bought today. It's been in the family since '98 and currently has around 170K on it. I intend to see how far she'll go!
i had a gold version of this car w/ the 3.8L. paid $50 for it in 2000. beat the hell out of it. it had open manifolds (exhaust rusted out and was ripped off going over a hump bridge). it was loud as hell. fun car. won my 1st street race in it against a 3rd gen IROC Camaro.
i remember back on 1986 when my aunt brought one of this buick century home it was a burgundy one.but back then it was like wooow like having a nice 2012 in our actual days.it was really fancy.really nice.but as time goes by you could tell its been more than a thousand sunrises.and sunsets.and look really old.its good that you still people find them intersting now ive turned down so many oportunities to get one myself.is one of the old cars i wouldnt make it a classic.when i could buy a stang
In my opinion, this is back when GM actually cared about the products they produced. Everything is all plastic now...you almost never see cloth on the door panels, or comfy seats like those. And when you did this video, the car was 25 years old. You have to admit, it's in decent shape for its age. Give it a new dash panel and some clear coat and she'd shine like the day she came off the assembly line. I wonder if it's even still going to this day.
Funny because I own a 90 that I bought for $400 like this one but with tricked- out flip flop colors changed from black metallic with sparkles in the day to grey, black, flat grey or flat black at night, its a 4cylinder that only needed 1 fuel injector a pretty simple job, had 89k in 2011, was smooth on the way home while I drove as my sister pulled the car and nearly tore out an engine cradle bushing with our mom's truck! It has 147k miles now yet I've only driven it for 7 months on off between I and my sister, then she kept it for her daily commute, later I and my sister got different vehicles 2012, 2014. the buick sat from 2014 till 4/25/2016 still starts like butter lol now my cousin will be driving it, she says half a year but idk it's sentimental value to me now as it has always been, I jus want it back so I can truly give it a run for the money that I put into it! pun attended :-)
My dad had a 84 century custom in a metallic grey blue nice running car bought brand new from Heritage Buick back in 84 was the last year for that color 85 had a navy blue which was used through out of the late 80s🇺🇲
I like the way the last owner either let the muffler fall off or cut it off to make it sound that way. Lol just kidding, but I do like the filming of older cars to see the upkeep of them. Are some of the cars filmed for sale?
brian versansky This happened to my dad's '92 Buick Century, the mounts for the muffler had rusted out, and when we got home, I just pulled the muffler off and put it in the garage, where it's still at, even as I write this.
If you really want some entertainment watch that "one owner car guy" he's hilarious with the clunkers he shows. He'll be like "look at this seat, its barely been sit on" and its like all cracking , LOL!!!! Hilarious.
He is funny and entertaining. I like his videos., I think he goes by the name CerealMarshmallows. He is based out of California, which explains why the cars he has look so good.

My dad has a '92 Buick Century, it has a 33 HP V6 engine, fair transmission (my dad thinks it's starting to go out, it tends to slip at traffic lights), good tires and brakes, decent radio (tape player doesn't work), air conditioning and heating (heater works, but not the air conditioner), power seats, power trunk release, and finally, the doors (front only) automatically lock when you take the car out of (P)ark.
I actually said OH JEEZ when I saw the front... and ooooh that buzzer says it all........ BEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeEEEEEEeeeeEeEEEEEEEEEeeEEeeEEeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
The car isnt in really bad shape, its not rusty!! Come to Canada to see how winter is tough for cars here. Sadly, we doesnt see nice cars like this one since few decades...
God, that thing sounds sooo mean! I love the sound of the older GM V6's and have since I was a kid. I had an '88 Century Custom as my 2nd car. It was similar to this, but it wasn't anywhere near as loaded and it had the 2.5 "Iron Duke" 4 Cylinder in it. It leaked Power Steering fluid pretty bad, but it was still a good car. Wish it would have had the V6, though.
i dont really like to see the new cars.mostly just fast forward to the stuff that is interesting but reviews of cars like these make are fun to watch.even full length.i always imagine how nice it would be if someone restored cars like this one
I been wanting my favorite car like this since 2018, I been waiting and waiting to buy one, but I know they are hard to find for sale, I still haven't bought my favorite car still 😭 I'm upset that I haven't bought my favorite car like this since 2018!
There's a "magic" resonance around 2500 for these older V6s, even without the muffler as this video proved. Too bad GM did something to get rid of this awesome sound by the time the LG8 rolled out (which was what was in my Malibu I had). If Wikipedia is correct, that's the LE2 version with the 2bbl carb - something I thought was extinct by 1986 in those cars!
It needs a new exhaust. Over all, however, it looks pretty good and quite comfortable. When you talk about the big 3, I like more General Motors vehicles, having Oldsmobile and Cadillac as my favourite ones. And for 75K mileS (I bet on 175, or maybe even on 275K miles), it could be better, but its showing to be a good warrior. Thank you very much for sharing, Kyle! Good vibes.
My nanny had this same car. The external was white and the interior had red velvet seats. Only problem was if she exceeded about 48 miles per hour, the car would shake
The exhaust sound on these was very cool. My aunt had a Berreta that had the V-6 and it always sounded bigger than it was. I always liked the wagons, kind of a "low-sleek" design. I would've loved to have taken one and souped it up a little. Or, how 'bout this, Jay Leno the thing. Modify it to rear drive and stuff a turboed V-6, LOL.
The car looks good for it age. All it needs is some minor comestic work, a complete and thorough tune-up; a rebuilt/cleaning or replacement of the 2bbl carb found on the 2.8L V6 from sources like Edelbrock or Holley and a new complete exhaust system and you have a comfortable ride that will get you from point A to point B very easily without much problems.
@paintedbird Buick knows how to build a car, whether it's a base car or an upscale one. I just purchased a 2000 Park Avenue with 73000 miles, it purrs like a kitten. First Buick I have ever owned and I am definitely satisfied with it, i know it will be a very dependable car especially with that 3800 V6.
1986 was the last year for the carbed 2.8. The MPFI 2.8 is a huge improvement. These cars can take a lot of abuse and still ride nicely. Another thing, its odd how no indicator lights work.
Man I would KILL to have been able to buy this just to restore it to factory condition. This car is obviously determined to keep running, just like my old high mileage Toyota 4runner.
Those old column-mounted gear shifters beat modern floor shifters by a landslide. IMHO, they are much more convenient since they are right in front of you.
i wish you would do more videos on older cars like this again
Yep! That would be great!
David Mollard agreed
me too and cheaper cars
Yes
He died

I love these old car videos. I try to imagine what they were like when they were still in the showroom.

There's something really appealing about 1980's American cars. They look so comfortable and well made, not to mention the attention to detail!
I always associated American cars with V8 sounds, but I have learnt they made some mean sounding sixes as well after binge watching beaters by saabkyle and some others.

smithraymond09029 was the 84 Buick Century rusted out
100% California car. Zero rust.

I'd have this car over the newest Lamborghini
same gotta love these buicks built like tanks

My mother, r.i.p., owned a 1987 Buick Century Custom Sedan with rosewood paint. Beautiful.
The amount of ashtrays and their placement in these older cars always cracks me up. Car sounds awesome! haha wasn't expecting it! Thanks for sharing!
I love the sound of those old 3.1 engines. The 4.3's sound pretty cool also.
It's a 2.8 litre not 3.1. This is a 1986 and the 3.1 came out in 1994.

Great video!!
This was like GM's FWD answer to the Plymouth Volare.
Nice sound, is it a straight pipe?

I got the same car in a dark gray color. Fun to drive, not the most reliable thing on the planet, but it's sure fun to drive.
The Centuries were the best Buick cars. Plus this generation of the Century and its Cutlass Ciera twin both had a very long run. ^_^
It needs a new exhaust. Over all, however, it looks pretty good and quite comfortable. When you talk about the big 3, I like more General Motors vehicles, having Oldsmobile and Cadillac as my favourite ones.

Finally A Review Of A Car That I Can AFFORD :]!
This is the perfect definition of a beater

Nice. Kyle was going a bit too upscale with all the newer and expensive cars. Gotta love the junkers and Kyle's diverse approach to cars.
idk y but love old cars like this
these cars are straight up TANKS
Kyle, just so you know, thats the carburated 2.8, which makes 112HP and 135lbft. Same motor thats in the 1985 Chevy Celebrity I might be buying :D
I love these old cars, but I like it more when you find the good sort of well kept or better survivers, but it´s all fine.
Man I would KILL to have been able to buy this just to restore it to factory condition. This car is obviously determined to keep running, just like my old high mileage Toyota 4runner.
BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL
