Hi Robin I will go next week to Red Sea for Diving. And I will have the same cameras with me: Sony RX100 M3 and GoProHero 3+ black. Can you give me some advise for filming underwater with this cameras? What are the settings you used for this great video? Have you used ProTune with the GoPro? Have you used redfilters and/or Lights?
THNX for your comment Marcel Frei! The settings used for the Gopro is quite easy to set up: Protune, Cam raw, 60 FPS, wide FOV... (This gives you lot's of options, you can slow down your footage to get great slowmotion shots and also, protune mode gives you great control when editing) Just keep in mind that protune mode is very time consuming, but in my opinion it's very well worth it! Gear used: Backscatter flip filter (red dive filter) + Sea Life Aquapod. I normally use both lights, and red filter for the best result with the gopro but in this video i didn't since most of the shots underwater are shot with the RX100... If you wanna see the footage with the gopro combined with red filter and lights check out my other videos:
Marcel Frei With the RX100 I used lights only, tree video lights form I-torch, also i did use a wide angle lens from inon to get a wider field of view... The RX 100 is much trickier but produces better video for sure. If you are new to underwater videography I would recommend starting with the GoPro. If you however have a good housing the gives you full control I would recommend shooting in the highest avchd quality possible, 60 FPS. You should also customize your meny so that you have easy access to the features you want to control like white balance and ISO for instance... I you shoot in manual mode: Set focus mode to center, use manual white balance (note that mine just said error the entire time so you might wanna check for updates) set aperture to about F8-F10 depending on the amount of light available, control exposure by adjusting the shutter speed. Hope this helps!
Hey Robin that is awesome...there is a ton of questions around editing I'd love to ask you! I loved the music for this video...are you a recording artist? would you have any music available for other (beginning) video makers?
Steven Baker Hi Steven! Thanks again, I'm really glad you like the video! Wouldn't say that I'm a recording artist in that sense, I don't really don't have enough time to create and record as much as I'd like... So in other words no, my music is not available for for sale or free downloads i'm afraid:S (unless of course you'd like to use this particular tune). I make the music specifically for each video, it's not exactly the easy way to go, but I like the result! Thanks for your comments once again, I'm more than happy to answer any question regarding editing!
Robin Widéen Thanks Robin...I'd love to use that piece of music...my wife has heard it playing and has asked me who it was and that she would like it be on her next playlist...I'm shooting all the Salmon fishing footage I can this summer and into the fall. I want to do a few different projects after October when the season closes. That 'Home' theme would be awesome for a video that would be showcasing my brother-in-law who works 3000 miles from here, and is never really 'Home' until he gets on the rivers. I would credit the music to you and provide links to your youtube channel at the end as well. In regards to editing...I'm ready to out grow the GoPro bumper at the beginning and end of my videos. I love your Rowi Design logo at the start of your videos, is that something that you can do in Final Cut Pro X? Also, how do you do the end piece with the video in video links? One at a time, export then import it back in and add another? I think I might be able to accomplish this with iMovie. Do you do any colour editing with the GoPro studio before you use Final Cut Pro? I'm a little worried about editing colour if I shoot in protune and can only edit in the GoPro studio. I would like to get the Final Cut Pro, the price went up on it right after our Canadian dollar tanked against the American dollar. I just have to sell my wife on it, could be difficult. Maybe I'll wait until I see her coming out of the Michael Kors store with a bunch of parcels then I'll bring it up. We're leaving for Grand Cayman tomorrow morning...really looking forward to the adventure!
Thanks very much! I will try it hard to get good videos. I'm doing lot of vidoes, but quite new to scuba diving...
