Thank you Lisa. Part of the reason I made it is to share with those who inquire me about coaching. I'm sure you agree that coaching is an investment of time on our part as well. Coaches have to be sure to protect their time and resources just as someone looking for coaching.
When I started I was assigned a mentor who was always busy, and didn't have time to mentor me at all. The next mentor was busy and barely attended the regular sessions and I found you, and I devoted my time to watch videos. In that way I found out many ways to do the intro-body-closure, then I found ORAI, English is a foreign language in my country, so I rechecked my EFL books. Now I use ELSA to Improve my pronunciation, and other apps. Thanks for your honest testimony.
My pleasure as always! I found online resources to be a huge help for me especially RUclips. ORAI is also a good piece of software to help with certain aspects of speaking. Especially for beginners.
Aaron, as a trainer and coach, couldn't agree more with your points here. I won't let someone hire me for short-term contests or TEDx views, it's too out of the speakers control. More terrific wisdom from you. Thanks!
Thank you Aaron. I was just thinking about get a coach but your video has helped me put things in perspective especially when it comes to my priorities 👍🏾
That is exactly why I made the video. It may sound counterintuitive for a speech coach to recommend not getting a speech coach, but I really do believe it should be treated like any big financial investment because it really is one.
Your perspective, insight, dedication to truth and most of all...your willingness to share these things (FOR FREE) are admirable and inspirational. Your words, actions and deeds keep those of us in the craft (coaches and learners alike) honest and driven. As always...Thank You Aaron.
Thank you, C.J.! It's part of my mission to help people vs. prioritizing profit. I'm glad that you have taken notice and more glad that you are finding value. Hope things are going well for you and yours.
Good advice, Aaron. I like the concept of accountability partner, but, as you rightly pointed out, if one is competing for a trophy, having an experienced coach might be a worthwhile investment.
Thanks Nonso! It's ok to compete for the trophy but it's when it becomes your main focus that I think coaching is a risky investment because success is determined not by your progress but by the subjectivity of a group of judges.
If I had $$ to spare, I might consider a coach qs a way to fast track some of the growth I'm looking for. But I have five kids. And they eat like they're 10 kids. Aint nobody got no extra $$$. Writers groups. Peers. Mentoring. It gets me to the same place, just a bit slower. I'm okay with that.
Hi @Aaron thank you for talking about everything concerning a need for a speech coach. But you did not explain exactly what a speech coach really do apart from being an accountability partner and helping you to be better communicators/speakers. Will a speech coach teach you about voice techniques and control, pronunciation of words or how to do that etc. Would be grateful if you could tell me exactly what a speech coach does and do speech coaches belong to a recognised body? thanks in advance.
What a speech coach does is really based on the specialty of the speech coach. For instance my specialty is speech writing and story structure. While I have knowledge of other aspects of speaking I wouldn't advertise myself as a coach who could, for example, help with your voice control or grammar. The suggestions to do your due diligence explained in this video apply to all coaches though.
I just found your video but I disagree, I want to invest in a coach for growth and starting a different career and advising me on my technique. Free is ok, some of us don’t have accountability partners or mentors but will find a way to get that money to pay for good instruction and invest in our future. Being able to actually talk face to face and get feedback n engage with an instructor is something that’s a dying tradition. Everything is online and videos people aren’t good with communication etc????the more we encourage the videos the more we increase this lack of interest in person to person communication and public speaking
Nothing like speaking your own bias into the world tsk tsk. For some a championship is a deeply meaningful goal. That shouldn't be judged, particularly by a coach. That being said, if people show a lack of commitment with a goal that doesn't see coherent that should be snuffed out and them moved on. However the wrong goal by our standards is not the optimal position a coach iMO
We will have to agree to disagree there. It’s not just matter of my bias. After all we all have biases including the reason why you replied the way that you did. It is a matter of what I have experienced and what I am trying to share from my experience. I don’t think I was able to truly appreciate the value of a contest until I stopped caring about the trophies involved in “winning” the world championship. What I simply share here is that you need to find the coach that you vibe with. To me that is the responsibility of a coach to make sure that that relationship works. If I have someone that is just focused on winning a championship, then I’m not the right coach for them plain and simple.
As a speech coach and a competitor, I REALLY Appreciate your realism and honesty! I’ll be sending this to everyone who approaches me for coaching!

Totally agree with this! Well said Aaron!
Appreciate it Mahathir!

Exactly! There are many resources out there that can help. If you're willing to put in the work, you can get just as much benefit.
Already know your weaknesses
