I am Japanese and I could find little information about him even by googling in Japanese. Just a forum of his fans from 20 years ago. How could someone find about him. It's so mind-boggling.
Could you write a couple of lyrics from this album? Even without translation, just in Japanese, it would be very cool, I have long wanted to find someone who understands Japanese, I myself could understand only 20% of the lyrics
Tbh I would love to see you discuss more obscure or straight up weird folk music. As after only just checking out a bit of Kengo Iuchi I am absolutely loving it.
I would love to see more videos like this, Metal is such an easy target for disturbing topics, but in a more intimate genre where lyrics can be a focus, Folk can be disturbing on levels that Extreme Metal can’t reach.
Man, I love your videos. I discovered so many great bands thanks to you, like Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes, who became one of my absolute favorites. And you were the one who intoruced me to Kengo Iuchi, thanks to this video, and man, this guy sounds just like my depression. I am so glad that I found your channel. May Kami-sama bless you!
Two other bands that play around with folk music that I think you should really check out are Badgerlore and Natural Snow Buildings. I’d KILL for a video on the latter band btw lol.
very good video man, thank you so much for checking this out. kengo is one of the interesting figures in music ever and it makes me happy that his work will now be a bit more recognized.
you bringing up sun city girls also reminds me of the 90s psychedelic garage rock scene in Japan, some of my most recent favorites come from them. Les Rallizes Denudes being the most obvious but theres also dope bands like white heaven, shizuka, high rise, LSD March, and my personal favorite Angel'in heavy syrup. Theres also the crazy experimental and improvisational stuff futshitsusha along anything Keiji Haino related and acid mothers temple. Those last two get lumped into the harsh noise scene with les rallizes denudes but ultimately overshadow an awesome subsect of comforting and "chill" music as one would put. Nothing crazy but im sure you'll like some of the recs hopefully
I took the time to listen to Utsu after you shared it on Instagram because the artwork really caught my eye. I loved how even the quietest moments of it sounded completely unhinged, like the musician was right at their breaking point before going into a complete meltdown in the more chaotic parts.
Awesome vid, have you ever checked out the boredoms from Japan . Even John zorn has a ton of albums of noise experimental that he released from Japan , like Naked City. Awesome channel 👍
Hey dude (Wyatt?), you should check out Grim (Japan) if you haven't already, especially Factory Ritual LP.. On a par with Linekraft, yet totally different. On a different note, try Space Machine (aka Masonna) which is really visionary. Good luck. Good pod.
That album art for ‘Depression’ is…something else. Unsettling is an understatement. What is it with Japanese artists and their knack for crafting some of the most nightmarish and bizarre imagery you could possibly imagine?
this seems right up my alley, i find folk/(people often ask how) realms of (screa)Emo/& Black Metal comfortable" - just a sound i am so familiar with. i never heard of this dude before and sounds like a good listen.
I'm definitely up for Japanese folk music. Jazz is my music of comfort, though maybe not the jazz you might be thinking of. It's closer to Swing, but the era it was written there wasn't as much of a distinction between the two. French Jazz is kind of its own beast.
Maybe I should check him out once more. Before I heard "Anata no Kyouki no Haru ga Saku" years ago, I already knew Keiji Haino's "Watashi dake?", so this kind of music wasn't that much of a surprise.
you really should delve into john fahey's discography, as you'll find both comforting works and challenging, unsettling works along its course one of them in particular is both at once and is a record i hold very dear
I’d say Jandek and Kengo Iuchi are really similar. I prefer Iuchi, I’ve been listening for years. Absolute masterful project. I found him through his collaborator I believe, or that split he was on with the Japanoise project. But yeah it was from Japanoise and experimental music from Japan (and I’m an extremely causal enjoyer of Japanese noise btw)
Hey Wyatt, maybe check out Spires that in the Sunset Rise (whole name), in particular This is Fire or Curse the Traced Bird. Not quite as visceral as what the Japanese specialize in, but atmospheric for sure.
Dear Wyatt, do you know by any chance the Chinese noise musician/guitarist Li Jianhong [ 李剑鸿 ]? I was suggested some of his works by a cultured fella, in particular San Sheng Shi [ 三生石 ] (a free impro ultra-psychedelic guitar solo album from 2008) and his latest collaborative project from 2023 歲寒三友 Les trois amis de l'hiver
i guess it makes sense since they both come from this Japanese avant-folk tradition but tobari is more on the "indie" side of it, to put it so :). check him out, both records are great. @@wyattxhim
Bro, i know this is not really on the topic of the video. Checking now japancese grind/noise scene. Do you have any explanation or info about Endon's "Mama". I cannot find lyrics or anything about lyrical content of the album or its purpose. I know that this is more about music, yes but still (about musical structure, production and so on i could find but nothing about their debut)
'Noise Folk'........jeeez..... is this where i tap out or just keep on going? I hate bbeing old. Not got much room left in the grey matter. In fact i'm losing it quicker than i can fill it
@@wyattxhim I had to cut my hair short when I got a job as an underground driller on the north of siberia so I could wear a hardhat without lots of hair getting in the way. First I had to get used to it but over some time it felt refreshing because my head became much lighter and it was easy to wash
I think my old comment got nuked... Great. I Found Tougher Than Nails - Delusional Blasphemies Destroyed, full rip. If you are still curious, let me know, I'm down to drop it via mega or dropbox to you, just tell me which way you want me to contact you. Cheers :D

when an experimental musician is from japan, you know you're gonna experience something incredible
[Hanatarash's bulldozer rumbling ominously in background]
so true jajajaj
perhaps
Tbh I would love to see you discuss more obscure or straight up weird folk music. As after only just checking out a bit of Kengo Iuchi I am absolutely loving it.
it's not as obscure, but the power electronics musician GRIM posts neofolk under the alias "jun konagaya"
This musician sounds very interesting. You gotta give it up for Japan for having some of the most avant-garde artists out there.
I would love to see more videos like this, Metal is such an easy target for disturbing topics, but in a more intimate genre where lyrics can be a focus, Folk can be disturbing on levels that Extreme Metal can’t reach.

Thanks for mentioning Kengo Iuchi .
Cool stuff. Reminds me some works of Jandek.

YESSSSS, I love their first release! Wasn't expecting a video on Kengo Iuchi at all, nice work!

Omg this is amazing to see!! I think I discovered Kengo Iuchi a year ago. They deserve way more attention
Maybe I should check him out once more. Before I heard "Anata no Kyouki no Haru ga Saku" years ago, I already knew Keiji Haino's "Watashi dake?", so this kind of music wasn't that much of a surprise.

Makoto Kawabata + MSBR
very nice video , it would be awesome to hear you talk about any kind of folk music more often
very interesting video, thanks for talking about this you gave me something new to check out
It reminds me of a twisted and unsettling version of Urfaust in a way
Check out Shikabane - Why do you live?
Inugami to Kachiku is his best album
Hey Wyatt, maybe check out Spires that in the Sunset Rise (whole name), in particular This is Fire or Curse the Traced Bird. Not quite as visceral as what the Japanese specialize in, but atmospheric for sure.
It would be great if you could cover Type O Negative.

Have you updated your lighting recently? Looks good!
My wife got me a new camera for Christmas cause she noticed all of the comments criticizing my camera quality haha
If you like this listen to Hachiman Mae
you should listen to the band uaral
Japan makes some cool shit.
Have you heard about Danielle Dax? Her debut album is quite unique.
1:23 Fleurety
Would love to hear you talk.a out merzbow in general
You should check out Hinnem Nihre by Trhä
Comus mentioned
Comus number 1
check out daisuke tobari - not really unsettling, but weird, beautiful, and low fi, similar to jandek in a way.
Funny enough I discovered him as he was a related artist to Kengo Iuchi
i guess it makes sense since they both come from this Japanese avant-folk tradition but tobari is more on the "indie" side of it, to put it so :). check him out, both records are great. @@wyattxhim
only japan would make something like this
Consider doing a video on post-rock?
Yes

Time for Kan Mikami and Kazuki Tomokawa too!!!
If the thumbnail has a "Live in Japan 2007 by Genocide Organ" vibe, you know the content will be unsettling to say the least
albert?
Do you know a band called Cultus Sanguine? It will be interesting to know your opinion about them. Pretty sick stuff.
What’s up?
Dax riggs
'Noise Folk'........jeeez..... is this where i tap out or just keep on going? I hate bbeing old. Not got much room left in the grey matter. In fact i'm losing it quicker than i can fill it
I like Kengo Iuchi... kinda. What's up with your hair?
you should do a review/video on Monggrel-Ceremonies. It's garbage
Why do you always tell everyone to drink water?
Unrelated but, is that a Triumvir Foul shirt?
Yes
yee yee ass haircut

Dude 'most cringey music you listen to'. Like Cyko Sam
