It was a good video for about two minutes; then it turned into a bizarre, stories-of-this-guy's-old friends, "Oh look at me, I make myself laugh", thing. - Simon Whistler recommended this trash, and I don't see why. This is about 20% "fact", and 80% really cringey attempt at comedy. - Glad you can laugh at yourself, nitwit, nobody else is.
I also found this channel through Simon Whistler, and I love it. Different take on the fact videos, more of a fact with cometary, which I really enjoy.

I'm born and raised in Stockholm Sweden. In my 31 years I've never met a single person who doesn't like Swedish Chef.
In Germany, the Chef was called Smoerebrod the Danish Chef.
In Denmark he was the Swedish Chef.
My friends in Copenhagen thought the Swedish Chef was absolutely hilarious, but when I told them the German version of the Muppet Show had him as Danish, you could have heard a pin drop (until someone said BASTARDS!).
PS I love Swedish; Danish and Norwegian people. No offence intended.

I'm a Swede who moved to England and when I first heard about the Swedish chef (from every single person here I met) I found it hilarious, but I gotta admit that nowadays the fact that people will still mimic that chef when they first meet me is just getting a bit old 😅 luckily my accent got good enough that people can't tell I'm Swedish anymore
I'm from Wisconsin, my brother told me about a friend who invited him to the gym with another buddy from the south. The southern dude was convinced that my brother was in on the stupid accent joke and was horrified when he found out it's really the southern wisconsin accent and couldn't believe we can talk knowing we sound like that. Which prompted my brother to bring up my speech impediment, which people used to mimic for years (until I learned to mostly avoid letting it slip out) and said "my sister talks a lot for someone who sounds stupid with her speech impediment".

Well, the average Canadian sounds mostly like an average American. A boot v. About are the only differences that pop up regularly, so I don't think that analogy holds up...
Plus Brits seem to think all Americans are from Texas or Kentucky, and frankly (as an American,) I find that hilarious.
Americans aren't usually too sensitive about being made fun of for our culture since we usually do it to ourselves before anyone else gets a chance.

I think why we don't like the Swedish chef is that we sort of expect him to give us some recognition humor, but then he doesn't because he really doesn't sound Swedish to us in anyway at all... He is more like some random thing that somebody slapped "Swedish" on...
I thought he was danish. Because here in Germany he is called Danish Chef.
At first I didn't realize the Italian guy wasn't singing in English. That is by far the funniest thing I've heard all day! Additional detail is I'm American.
Most Swede's wouldn't use so strong words as upset or pissed off, we would just clench our fists in our pockets and move on :P

Concerning dubs and sweden: We dont dub that much stuff. Mostly cartoons and shows where the major demographic is 10 or younger. We put subtitels on everything else.
This places The Muppets in quite a strange place. The movies from the 90's and 00's have a swedish dub IF they released in the theatre. I have memories of seeing the muppet christmas carol with a swedish dub as a kid, but at the same time Muppets Tonight aired with subs.
Fraggle Rock, muppet babies and Sesam Street was dubed. We also made our own Sesam content under the name Swedis Sesam (no street). I have never seen the old films (movie, caper and manhattan), the muppet show or any other old stuff dubbed to Swedish.
And we like the Swedish Chef, we just don't think it sounds like hes speaking mock-swedish.
I don't think it's weird that the Swedish chef isn't that popular here in Sweden. The joke doesn't work as well if you know Swedish, because then he really doesn't sound that Swedish. It's just generic gibberish. Other Muppets are way funnier.
Also, in Sweden humor that makes fun of Sweden is really popular so our standards are high for comedic parody of our culture.

To be fair, we often find jokes about sweden from other swedes to be funny. If it's a foreign person doing the joke the standard must be pretty high to be acceptable. It's hard to make quality jokes about a culture you're unfamiliar with.

The words a gibberish but the got the speech pattern right.I thinks it is really good. When I have issue is the Inga from Sweden sterotype with the lederhsen and the semi-germanic accent.

Americans love when Americans mock other Americans. If someone from Sweden made a character that mocked them, then you'd never hear the end of it.

As someone who speaks both English and Swedish I can say that Prisencolinensinainciusol sounds way closer to American English than the Swedish chef sounds to Swedish.
the story of the swedish chef i've heard is that it was a swede with the Dalecarlian dialect which was very nervous and for a foreigner it sounds possible that you may sounds like the swedish chef

That would kind of describe my feelings towards him. I don't mind neither the character nor the fact that Henson found it hilarious. What bothers me is that the first thing I get from Americans if I mention I'm swedish is some kind of gibberish loosely based on the Swedish chef. Also the thing with Americans actually thinking that Å Ä Ö doesn't make a word sound any different and use it to make their Twitter names look cool.
The casual racism that noone thinks is the least bit racist whilst at the same time getting all huffy about Apu from the Simpsons is to say the least stupid and at best hypocritical.

It's more that we hate the combination of all Scandinavian languages and spelling mixed together, and with a bit of German thrown in.

the inspiration of the swedish chef is actually a nervous dalcarlian chef, the swedish chef talks with more of an dalcarlian accent than any other swedish accent
Saw that fake English song a few years ago, apparently the guy made it because he was stick of American songs getting into the charts and girls loving them but not knowing the words.
Think they did an anniversary special or something and reshot the video.

The source used is in the description. It notes that the character is not popular in Sweden and that a common criticism from Swedes and linguists is that he doesn't "sound" Swedish. Which is exactly what the I say in the video. I guess you're an exception to this, which I guess makes you special. Treasure that feeling.

silentguy123 There are all sorts of words used differently, so maybe you‘re just not custom to it. English might not be my first language, but i found it in two translation books. just because you have never heard of it, does not make it untrue. ^^
edit: the proper translation of "drive a ship" would be "ein Schiff fahren".
Prisencolinenasinainciusol by Adriano Celentano is IMHO much more refined than the swedish chef. Swedish chef is more like mumbling stuff while Celentano's song uses actual (fake) words which repeat (on the chorus). Also, it's a great song and funny clip.
I'm sure that Adriano Celentano (the italian guy) is just a time-travelling Sacha Baron Cohen

As someone who grew up with Danish family, I can absolutely confirm that Sweden is the butt of so many jokes, and they get INCREDIBLY pissy about it. Then again, Denmark is also fantastically pissy about being made fun of, especially by Sweden. Eating your chips with mayonnaise instead of ketchup or remoulade (a less tart tartar sauce) will earn you death-glares from fellow Danes because "it's what the Swedes do". I love it.
For the record, the Muppet Show itself admits that he doesn't actually speak Swedish. They bring it up at least twice.

In Sweden we rarely redub shows or movies other than kids shows and kids movies, and movies are oftenly available in the original language during the theatrical release. The Muppet Show was no exception and was on during prime time, in english and with subtitles.

Honestly I almost wish I saw more American stereotypes. The best on I saw was in this Kdrama and this dude walked around with his blond hair and his surfboard and just...I can’t explain it, he had the most dude bro voice ever and I think he left to just go party and drink down at the beach. I mean, it was beautiful.

The voice of the swedish chef is actually a painstakingly re-edited and put together mix of old ABBA songs. It might sound expensive, but a certain swedish furniture giant secretly bought all the rights and made it a reality. Sadly, the evidence got lost in the war. But you can still find traces of it on old LP discs, especially the 2nd edition ones. Played back at exactly the right speed some portions of it will be phonetically identical to the words spoken by the swedish chef, even down to coughs, sneezes and garglings.
However, a short while before airing the original recordings were lost. That is why they had to voice him the way you described in this video. As a swede I can confirm that the video is otherwise totally accurate.
I'm American and I always say if you can't laugh at yourself you shouldn't laugh at anyone else. That said, I have an excellent sense of humor!😂
