    Try your best not to touch them with your bare hands, it causes spotting from oil on your skin, and don't wash them with water until ready to use! Also don't allow frost or freeze to kill the vines! Just a few things I know from many years of growing this incredible vegetable!!

    Beautiful tubers and some great hints. Thank you!! It’s my second year of growing SPs in containers. I only had slips for the Japanese purple variety. They were very small last year but very sweet. I’m hoping for some larger ones this year. I planted the slips a bit early, and it was too cold for them to grow, but they took off once the weather got warm. I give the leaves to our hens.

I planted one in a garden bed, but the rest in the "lawn" of creeping Charlie in hard packed clay. I dug up the vine from the bed, I only saw one potato in there. It was good. • @newgardenroad

      The top growth will die back with the first frost, but the tubers are more cold hardy. Supposing the first frost isn't a long hard freeze, you could harvest after. Best thing you can do to assure propagating them for next season is to harvest and store a few to sprouting in late winter.

    Hello so I planted in May Beauregard and Murasaki and only fertilized when I plants the plants. Should I fertilize and is it too late I do have Fish Fertilizer. I am located in Florida zone 9B. This is my first time growing sweet potatoes. Great video wonderful knowledge. Thank you for sharing!

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  5 месяцев назад

      Hey! I don't think that it's too late to fertilize and be sure that the NPK value of the fish fertilizer has a higher middle number (phosphorus) because that will promote root tuber formation. For example Neptune's Harvest is 2-4-1 which would be ideal, but Alaska Fish Fertilizer is 5-1-1 and higher in nitrogen which would promote top growth or leaves.

      Hi! Yes, I recommend a liquid fertilizer because it will be fast acting and can be applied every week or two. The Neptune’s Harvest Fish Fertilizer is my favorite, it has an NPK ratio of 2-4-1. Whatever you choose, look for one with a higher middle number which represents phosphorus, and that will encourage tuber development 👍🏼✨

Any info would be appreciated

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Год назад +1

      Hello David! The main thing that I do to prevent them is crop rotation and disposal of any infested potatoes. They have never completely ruined my crop, just a handful of the overall harvest. One other option to consider is applying beneficial nematodes to the soil prior to planting. You can find them at www.arbico-organics.com/category/beneficial-nematodes. I applied them to my garden last December and so far I'm seeing much less occurrence of pests such as flea beetles, and cucumber beetles. I hope that helps!

    What is your geographical location? When is your last frost? When is your first frost? I sprout a grocery store potato in the house 2 months before planting it April 20, that is our last frost. I let my plants grow 6½ months until our first frost kills the plants Nov 1st. I typically get 20 to 25 lbs of new potatoes from each plant. Plants love our hot blistering 100° dry as desert TN weather. I only grow white color sweet potatoes, we don't like the orange potatoes. My crop never seems to do better with fertilizer or water. I added a lot of dead tree leaves to the soil but leaves are gone in 3 months our hot weather cooks the organic material away. Sweet potato plants grow excellent in full sun. Sweet potatoes are a zero maintenance crop return 6 months later and dig up 75 lbs of new potatoes from 3 plants. We don't get much rain during the summer about 1" every month.

    do you only get one potato per plant?

      The average yield is 4-6 potatoes per plant.

    Would it be beneficial to trellis the vines

      I wouldn't say that it's generally beneficial to trellis the vines, but if you're gardening in a small space it would be helpful.

    Would diatomaceous earth stop the sweet potato weeble?

      It's possible, D.E. is a great deterrent in my experience but not fullproof.

    Hallo there. My sweetpatatoe. Sprouts are beginning to bloom. I have no idea how long since they were planted... Are they ready to harvest now or do I leave the sprouts till they die

      You may have to do a test harvest to find out.

    How do you grow anything with them spraying the sky with chemtrails. And how do you keep the moles from eating everything in site?

    Hm, and while I use manure and give plenty of water, it can take them months to make tubers. Arizona rains make everything explode in production.

    You can eat the slips - thats how early this plant can be consumed. The earlier you harvest the more water content is how I think of this is one. No? Thank you.

    What if you used a grocery store sweet potato and don't know what kind it is?

    • @newgardenroad
      @newgardenroad  Год назад +1

      I would give them at least 100 days to mature and do a test dig at that point in time.
