  • My favorite fruit to grow is hands down the persimmons. I have 12 different varieties which we go over in this video. The reason the persimmons tree is my favorite tree to grow is because its very easy, the fruit taste incredible and most people have never had a persimmons before. The reason its easy to grow is because of three main reason. First it manages to avoid all the late frost by flowering extremely late. Second persimmons are parthenocarpic which means they can produce fruit with out fertilization. Which means they avoid all the problems involved with cross pollination. Third but not least is the fact that they are incredible disease and insect resistant. I'm pretty confident that if you could get away with not spraying these trees at all. In this video I talk a lot about the two different types of persimmons astringent and non astringent. I also show a few different examples of each. I talk in depth about Asian varieties, American varieties and Hybrid varieties showing examples of each as well. Towards the end of the video I give my top Persimmon tree recommendation. @uncleclaysorchard #fruit #orchard #fruittrees #gardening #garden #fruits #backyardfarming #homestead

I have Hachiya: heavy bearer (40 + )four years straight, not dropped fruits until last year a few and a few this year. Saijo: second year bearing, dropped all but two fruits last year kept nine fruits this year. Fuyu: just planted last fall, has one fruit, and Giombo: also planted last fall, trig just grew first leaves and branches, growing nicely though. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, second best time is now.

I planted Jiro persimmon in 2021. I cut back the main stem to only 18 inches because I want my tree to be short. It’s slow growing. But the tree has thick stems, really healthy looking. This spring it flowered. However, I removed all of the flowers as I want my tree to get a little bigger so it can hold the fruit without breaking the branches. Thanks for your informative video!

Very cool video. I wonder if the Chocolate variety is the same as the 'Cioccolatino' variety found in Europe, it is supposed to be a good pollinator to other varieties, such as 'Vaniglia'. Planted 2 Vaniglia and a Cioccolatino in a row last autumn, they are putting on a ton of growth, even from just a small whip, just like you said.

I paid $100 for a 3/4 caliper giant Fuyu this year. Its around 5ft tall, and not that much growth on it. It did send out about 8 inches of new growth on just one of the branches. How old would you estimate it to be? It was sold as a fruiting size tree.

Persimmons mature even off the tree so you can actually pick them earlier
