Because it's hoarding protein. Not just for itself, but for the butterfly it will become and every egg that butterfly will lay. And it's about to lose its mouth... as it wriggles out of its skin during metamorphosis.
DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
* NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
That caterpillar in your backyard is chewing through your best leaves for a good reason.
“Caterpillars have to store up incredible reserves of proteins,” said Carol Boggs, an ecologist at the University of South Carolina. “Nectar doesn’t have much protein. Most of the protein that goes to making eggs has to come from larval feeding.”
Caterpillars are the larval stage of a butterfly. Their complete transformation to pupa and then to butterfly is a strategy called holometaboly. Humans are in the minority among animals in that we don’t go through these very distinct, almost separate, lives. We start out as a smaller version of ourselves and grow bigger.
But from an evolutionary point of view, the way butterflies transform make sense.
“You have a larva that is an eating machine,” said Boggs. “It’s very well-suited to that. Then you’re turning it into a reproduction machine, the butterfly.”
Once it becomes a butterfly it will lose its mouth, grow a straw in its place and go on a liquid diet of sugary nectar and rotten fruit juices. Its main job will be to mate and lay eggs. Those eggs started to develop while it was a pupa, using protein that the caterpillar stored by gorging on leaves. We think of leaves as carbohydrates, but the nitrogen they contain makes them more than one quarter protein, said Boggs.
-- What are the stages of a butterfly?
Insects such as butterflies undergo a complete transformation, referred to by scientists as holometaboly. A holometabolous insect has a morphology in the juvenile state which is different from that in the adult and which undergoes a period of reorganization between the two, said Boggs. The four life stages are egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (also known as chrysalis) and butterfly.
-- What if humans developed like butterflies?
“We’d go into a quiescent period when we developed different kind of eating organs and sensory organs,” said Boggs. “It would be as if we went into a pupa and developed straws as mouths and developed more elaborate morphology for smelling and developed wings. It brings up science fiction images.”

Fun fact: studies have been done that indicate butterflies actually _remember_ being caterpillars. Long story short, scientists exposed caterpillars to a shock every time they smelled a certain chemical, and then after they emerged as butterflies they reacted negatively to the same scent, expecting to be shocked.
That could just be them remembering the negative experience/pain, not necessarily remembering being caterpillars
I’ve heard of this before too! It’s kind of like, if you emotionally attached to something as a child, you can see it as an adult and it will bring up many memories!
Oh yeah? Got any sources?
Luis Castellon umm I don’t know where but I think if you just search butterfly shock experiment, you might find it?

I was left speechless, i had no idea caterpillars shed their skin when they go through metamorphosis. I thought they built the chrysalis around their body. That's so cool. I wish I was taught that in school.
Depends whether it is a moth or butterfly caterpillar. All butterfly (and some moth) caterpillars molt into a chrysalis form as in the vid while most moth caterpillars spin a cocoon with their silk.
Jacob Terrell Man your profile pic made me think that there was a hair on my screen
Some species do that, but the others basically has their skin hardens, and some sorta chemical digests them in a way and that mush builds the butterfly. Summary, skin hardens, caterpillar turns to mush, and that mush builds a butterfly.
too much pokemon
At my school, we were taught that caterpillars have 3 forms, Caterpie, Metapod, and Butterfree.
The Caterpie turns into a Metapod by leveling up. The Metapod turns into Butterfree by waiting a few battles. The Butterfree is now a level 17 adult.
If it is female, we put it in a daycare and use a Ditto to breed it. If it's a male, we leave it inside the box until one of us dies.
A caterpillar eating up close is so satisfying to me.

Caterpillars will always hold a special place in my heart. When I was little I would go look for monarch caterpillars on milkweed and put them in jars so I could take care of them. I love watching them grow and change from caterpillars to butterflies.
so like, they can evolve into butterflies inside a jar?
@@KCrispyINDO they probably had a bigger area where they would put milkweed leaves for them to eat, or just put milkweed in the jar
I did that with vine hawkmoths. I have to cut some leaves of the caladium plants or ask some neighbors for leaves.

This is actually the first video on caterpillers I've seen that mentioned that they shed their skin to make their Chysalis. Did not know that. Other videos and shows always seemed to imply that they used their silk for the chysalis. I wonder why? Anyway, great video as always, I love your content! :]
They use the silk for the cocoons, which are the casing outside the chrysalis/pupa. If it's a silk worm, it spins a cocoon the pupa goes inside. Pretty much cocoons are different from chrysalids, and only some caterpillars (silk worms mainly) make them.
If you think,if it Does make it. Shouldn't it begin with the tail? Yet the chrysalis appears on its head.
Chysalis? Please explain to me what that is. If you meant to spell *chrysalis* then you can always edit it and make me look like the fool and not you.

Hi Lauren.. I have a correction here.. The shedding of caterpillar skin to chrysalis actually just take place within 24 hours after they do the J-hook. Other than that this video is realllllly amazing!!! I currently have some monarchs in puppa stage right now.. I love them!!!
Working at an invertebrate zoo as one of their educators, this video was wonderful as it was much more accurate than most other depictions, and still cringeworthy with misconceptions.
The outside of the butterfly’s body during the pupal stage is not “protecting the pupa inside,” the entire thing is the pupa.
For a butterfly, their pupa stage just has a fancy name: the chrysalis. Originating from Greek meaning golden house. And the term pupa or chrysalis can be used interchangeably for butterflies. Not that one is inside the other. Just how a butterfly’s larva is called a caterpillar or a larva.
The outside of a butterfly as a pupa/chrysalis is similar to the larval stage or adult (imago) in that it’s the animal’s exoskeleton.
Caterpillar feet are so cute for some reason....

Please keep it going :)
I'm rearing eight eastern black swallowtails (Papilio polyxenes) that just entered chrysalis! The six that attached to twigs are a brownish hue while the two that managed to climb up the glass walls of the vivarium are bright green. I have no idea if that's just a coincidence or some kind of strategy I wasn't aware of? Anyway, it's a beautiful and fascinating process. It also makes you feel kinda like you're doing something good; I'm not sure the eight I plucked from the dill in our herb garden would have reached adulthood without intervention. P. polyxenes is common, but those who rear monarchs do the world a favor: the population has dramatically declined in the past few decades and extinction is a real threat. Stock up on milkweed if you can...
