Honestly, Rick Cerone was a lot better than Bench, both offensively and defensively. Mike Piazza and Ivan Rodríguez were great as well. I'd say 1) R Cerone 2) I Rodriguez 3) Bench 4) Piazza 5) Yogi 6) Dickey 7) Fisk 8) J Quirk 9) G Carter 10) Simmons 11) Y Molina 12) J Skinner
An anti semitic comment? What was it? Enuff with these BS accusations. Paul, whose nickname was the "Smiling Cobra" for his expertise in trades,[14] had his enemies, among them influential Cleveland radio host Pete Franklin, who said of Paul, "Gabe was a master at working the room, of getting to know everybody and knowing where all the bodies are. The thing about Gabe was that while he did work for an owner, he always found a way to get a piece of the team himself. Then it became damn near impossible to fire him because he was part-owner. Gabe's greatest gift was the ability to take care of Gabe."
I met Bench in Houston when I was a kid trying to get autographs at the big Holiday Inn near the Astrodome. He and Joe Morgan weren't particularly friendly and acted as if the kids wanting autographs were a nuisance. On the other hand, Pete Rose, George Foster and Sparky Anderson were much nicer and didn't mind joking around with the kids. He and Morgan were hall of fame players, but Rose, Foster and Anderson in particular were much more personable.
@@ryanponder679 Yeah, I guess everybody has their own personality. Maybe Bench and Morgan just weren't outgoing guys like Rose, Foster and Anderson. After getting those autographs way back in 1973, Pete Rose became my favorite player in baseball, even though I was an Astros fan and I liked the Rangers the best in the American League. That was back when the Astros were a National League team. I sure was disappointed when they kicked Pete out of baseball for the gambling thing. But just to show how things are, a few years later they had a big sign on the right field wall of the Astrodome advertising the Harrah's Casino in nearby Lake Charles, LA. And now you see ads for gambling casinos posted all over the place in different stadiums along with commercials for sports betting sites on TV.
@@robertwayne808 Thanks for sharing your cool story and observations. I'm from New Orleans but my favorite team is the Detroit Tigers. Trammell, Whitaker, Fielder and Sparky Anderson are my 4 favorite Tigers all time and all 4 signed my baseball cards when I sent them by mail so I remained huge fans of theirs. Regarding Rose, I think it's a travesty that he's not in the Hall especially with how acceptable gambling is now like you implied.
@@ryanponder679 It's good to meet a fellow Louisianian Ryan. I'm from Lake Charles, near the Texas state line, but I have lots of relatives in your part of the state. In fact I have a cousin from Metairie who married the older brother of former Padres pitcher Steve Mura, from New Orleans. I like the Tigers too. Even though they knocked the Astros out of the playoffs in October, it wasn't totally unexpected. Their manager is former Astros manager A.J. Hinch and I think he's doing a terrific job. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Tigers in the World Series next year or within two or three years. They have a terrific young pitching staff and a pretty good hitting lineup too. And I agree with you about Rose and Schilling. I think both of them should be in the HOF. I never got to meet Trammell, Whitaker or Fielder but I think it was pretty classy of them to sign the cards and return them to you. It doesn't surprise me that Sparky Anderson signed and returned the card. Like I said when I met him in Houston, he was just a nice guy, as were Rose and Foster and needless to say all of we kids who were there were thrilled. On another note, I've always been disappointed that major league baseball never expanded or put another franchise in New Orleans. It is sad there are so many of these biography channels that sensationalize headlines or titles in order to monetize. It is an unfortunate trend. Johnny Bench was found guilty of being the best MLB catcher of all time.
Yes, I believe he was convicted of that with overwhelming evidence.
