Extract a Broken Case From Your Chamber...Easily!

  • NOTE: It goes without saying, BE CAREFUL, WORK SLOWLY AND DON'T GO APE WITH THE FILE. There is always a risk you could scratch up your receiver or chamber if you aren't careful.
    If you reload ammunition and push that brass to the limits of its longevity you may have experienced case head separation and the case body stick in your chamber -- probably most common with .303 British brass. You tried a broke case extractor and that didn't work. What's next? Before you grab a rod and mallet and try and pound it out, why not try something that's worked for the Redneck Preppy?

    Awesome, Just did this on my Ruger 77/357 carbine, saved me a fortune not having to take it to a gunsmiths, took literally seconds using the file method.

      As long as you're careful, you're gold! Glad to hear it worked out for you!

    Tried this on my 270 after watching you. Worked slick. We don't have have a local gunsmith so this saved me a lot of time and money. Thanks.

    Thank you for the info!
    This happened today to my
    Son's gun.
    I used a length of braided cord, and tied a knot in the end.
    Pulled it thru the muzzle end, took 3 tries, and worked!
    Have a good weekend!

    Had a squib load in my new .22 pistol and nothing left to use pliers on and putting something in the barrel wouldn’t work. Inserted my small file and gave it a little twist and it came right out. Thank you so much for posting this video!

    easier than that, use a brass bore brush on the end of a cleaning rod. The brass brush pushed into the case neck will pull the broken case out very easily.

      I use a chamber brush specifically with the widest part at the end about an inch across. It's hard to find a cleaning rod that doesn't have a spinning handle but I found a military type Norinco one locks up so you can really twist and bind the brush in the case.
      I respect the ingenuity of using a file but with my clumsy hands I would probably rub it across the receiver somewhere and mark it up while I freak out about the stuck case.

      I can concur this idea works as a gunsmith I've used this to get out stuck shanks.

    Used the file method seen here on my .303 Brit. Worked great. No beating, no swearing, no insults, no cerrosafe, nothing. It just came out. Thanks for posting the video. 2 thumbs up.

    I experienced this yesterday on my Lee-Enfield 303, but I used an EZ-out and bumped it with a cleaning rod from the other end. This way would work even better. Thanks for the video!

    I want to thank you so much for you solution. My problems was a neck separation with the 5.7x28 cartridge. Neck stayed in the chamber. This was the best and easiest solution. thanks

    Lol I’m here Cuase I was shooting some hearters 303 and I got my first broken case, she’s been in the safe for the last year since I haven’t had the time to mess with her, thank you so much for this information I’ll have to try it out.

      Best way to extract is with a broken shell extractor but if you use this method just be patient and take your time! Good luck.

    Wish I had watched this before I got a ball point pen stuck in a norinco "tokarev" barrel. Got more stuck when I used a chopstick to try and get it out. Managed to get out the brass neck with a flat head screwdriver after the pen removed it but pen was still stuck. Warmed up the plastic a bit by warming the barrel and then using a thin steel rod pushed out the broken chopstick then hit out the pen with the same metal rod. A file would have been much easier lol.

    Thanks for the tip.
    Will this also work for a .357 lever action in c=which about 1/4" of the case is stuck in he chamber?
    This happens frequently when shooting .38 ammo out of the rifle. Any suggestions on how to avoid that? I use the rifle for training students and hence the use of the .38 SP ammo.

    will it harm the rifle if the file sticks out past the neck of casing?

    • @TheRedneckPreppy
      @TheRedneckPreppy  Год назад +2

      Sorry, I accidentally deleted your follow-up about semi-auto rifles and stuck cases.
      That's a bit of a more tricky proposition. If I have it in the calibre that the rifle is chambered in, I would first try a broken shell extractor, assuming that there was case head separation.
      If that's not the case, I usually use a carbon fibre rod placed down the barrel from the muzzle and then start to lightly tap the handle. I take my time and don't go nuts on it since I don't want to damage the crown. It usually comes out without too much trouble, though with some work. The file method really doesn't work too well unless you have something like an AR-15 that breaks open, but there is way usually too much internal receiver to potentially damage.

    How would that trick work on an AK 47 in 308?

    • @TheRedneckPreppy

      Ha ha, I'm a Canadian mate. Vanishingly small experience with AKs.
      I will admit, this method is mostly useful with a bolt gun.

    will the file be ok if it sticks out past the neck casing and into the barrel, or do I have to shorten the file for different calibers?

    • @TheRedneckPreppy
      @TheRedneckPreppy  Год назад +1

      I generally find that the file is centered and the one I use has a tapered head so I don't come into contact with the barrel.

    • @TheRedneckPreppy
      @TheRedneckPreppy  Год назад

      I should add, if you use a file that's thick enough, it won't actually go past the case neck.

      @sheldonpickover9359 Год назад

    Put a plastic sheath around the file when inserting into the action. Will prevent marring of the action.
    I literally cringed when I saw you do this
