The period when spears were prevalent on Japanese battlefields was from the late Sengoku period (around 1540) to the peace after Genna era (1615). Naginata is a polearm, but since it is a swinging weapon, it hurts allies in group battles. Naginata was not often used on battlefields where groups fought.
Mongolian scholar Wang Yun (1228-1304)"Japanese soldiers are equipped with bows, katana, and armor. There was no spear. All the soldiers are brave and do not seem to be afraid of death. "

are nagamaki and naginata considered spears or are they seen more as swords mounted to poles? some of my favorite swords are reshaped from large naginata or nagamaki, and thank you for taking the time and energy to provide good information.

I’m also very appreciative of this video! 👍🏻
I really love the design of Japanese spears and pole-arms. ☺️
The Yari is an extremely versatile design; ranging from simple short close-combat spears, to lances, to very long pikes. It also sometimes crosses over into hafted weapons (pole-arms) territory, usually occupied by weapons such as naginata and nagamaki.
Just like in other parts of the world (like, for instance, Europe), the spear/pole-arm - and its tactical use - kept its vital role up until the 20th century. For good reason! 😊
