- This episode I read a Chick Tract; a religious comic book meant to preach a southern baptist form of Christianity but which are usually over the top and offensive. This one is "Lisa". After counting the tropes found within the comic, I go out and feed some homeless people without preaching to them.

Doctors actually have a duty to report CSA. By not reporting it, this doctor is breaking the law.
In Texas (where I live) EVERYONE is a mandatory reporter regardless of profession. If you're aware of child or elder abuse or neglect you are required to report it by law.
Maybe the doc needs someone to preach to him about his crime.
Sure, he broke the law, but that’s only the law of man, and clearly this doctor believes in a higher law, and Jesus never said anything about obeying the laws of man... you know, except when he did.
@VT Alt The postage for a first-class stamp was never 17 cents. It jumped from $0.15 to $0.18 in March 1981. I think a presorted rate is depicted in the Chick Tract. I couldn't find historical presorted rate info at USPS so the ultimate date for the animation is still a mystery to me.

I waa homeless for two years in Denver a long time ago, and my main entertainment was comic books through their library. They have a good selection of TPBs of many genres, so support your local libraries. It helped keep myself together through my toughest times, letting my imagination go and knowing morality without the subservient guilt. The care package he did? That could be a breakfast or lunch a homeless person can use if he or she gets a day labor job to make an honest buck on a way out of the streets. You never know.
Elzabeth Smart's father hired a homeless man, to save a buck. Let that be a lesson.

Oh boy.....I was hoping this wasn't the tract I was thinking it was. I remember reading this one as a kid and it traumatized me. Why the hell would anyone give this to a child to read?? That final image of Lisa is heartbreaking. That poor child.

People do not realize how important a clothing donation they are, for the homeless they have no place to wash them readily and because of the smell, they can not be carried around till the can wash them. The lack of clean sock results in a lot of damaged feet and pain.
And I thought the ones with the racial stereotypes were bad! Wow...I'm not usually a fan of the Comics Code rule that "evil must be punished", but seriously, no consequences at all?

Chick did the "easily convinced" thing so often that I can only assume that he must have actually believed that the most common reason for not believing in his version of Christianity was not having heard it explained before.
That's a very common belief among certain evangelical groups. That the only reason people reject Jesus is because they haven't heard his teachings.
Apparently, he was converted while listening to a radio evangelist. So... yeah, he probably did.

@@jerkfudgewater147 you seem pretty angry, but your anger might be misguided. First, you're equating the "Christian right" (a political movement) with Christianity (a diverse faith). Not the same thing.
And I think you're confusing limbo for the Roman Catholic belief in purgatory. The Christian Right is largely made up of protestants, not Catholics, and they don't believe in that.
I won't argue that some Christians are wrong, and that evil has been done in the name of Jesus, but that's true of all greatly influential people. And honestly, no one has been more influential or misrepresented than Jesus in the western world. But you're lumping a LOT of people into a blank statement.
Chick also did the thing where apparently, wicked people for some reason have never, ever heard of Jesus. They can be white southern bikers and they'll be like "Hold on, who is this Jesus guy you're talking about?"

That is not what the Bible says though.... The Bible states that those who do not accept Christs gift will go to a day of judgement and they will be judged fairly. Show me where in the Bible that you think it says otherwise....... What you are talking about is based on what some Christians say but it is not technically Biblical......

That is not what Christianity teaches. The acceptance of Jesus is necessary but not sufficient: repentance is also necessary, and there's no real sign of repentance shown in any of the characters.
What do you mean, "afterwards"? Some "Christians" think they can do anything they want to anyone as long as they "believe", because everything Christians do is God's will.
@@Ketutar That is based in what's called Calvinism. To simplify somewhat, Calvinism teaches that literally everything is foreordained, including who will and will not be saved. Supposedly, we also have free will, though how this squares with everything being foreordained is beyond me. Calvinism is only really a strong thing in parts of the US, despite originating in Switzerland.

DasKame this is the part that pissed me off the most. No one gives a flying FUCK about Lisa and the horrors she’s gone through, which will probably affect her for the rest of her life. The emphasis is put on Henry’s “redemption” only. Like you said, absolute garbage.
What most concerns me about this story is that almost all of the tracts are intended for some type of person to see themselves in the main character. You are supposed to see the tract aimed at your demographic and go "Oh shit! I'v got the same problems as the dude in this story! I was worried but now this comic has told me how to fix this by turning to Jesus."
So one day, one of the people who makes these tracts decided that they had a gap in the product line and dudes who gave their 10 year old daughters herpes were slipping through that crack. Which seems like the sort of thing that only someone abusing their daughter would come up with.

Not only is the character, Henry disgusting..but that is the worst doctor in the world for not turning Henry in right away.

I agree. If I’m going to have a prostate exam or a physical, the last thing I want my doctor talking to me about where I will spend eternity. It’s hard to contemplate whether I’m going to heaven or hell when I have the doctor’s finger in me, Or when he/she is telling me to give good coughs after grabbing my testes.
I actually thought the doctor was preaching to him so he would do the right thing and turn himself, at first! You know, letting him know that basically he could be redeem in the eye of God but he has to face punishment and repent for ultimately, what he did was horribly wrong but know just a prayer will fix you right up.

Fun religious fact! If your a southern baptist (like the guy who made the comic) or any other christian denomination where salvation requires faith and not acts (most protestant sects), then all the characters in the story go strait to heaven. As long as you believe in Jesus and feel bad about sinning you are golden.
Fun religious fact part 2! Child molesting is not prohibited by the bible. Also, although the bible has a long list of family members it is unacceptable to bang, daughter is not in it (though it does seem implicitly forbidden by other, more general passages). So the only sin committed in this story that is explicitly condemned by the bible is adultery. If the main character had just married his daughter first then he wouldn't have had anything to worry about.

As an aside that's why the passage about Lot's daughters is so vile. They get their dad drunk and have sex with him to carry on the line. Messed up. Then you find out that the daughters of Lot are the founders of these other people.

I"m watching this in the final hour of 2016, and it is a nice way to end the year. Thanks for reminding me that good deeds are still done. In my line of work, many of my clients are homeless. They don't need me to preach at them. They need my skill and hard work. Happy New Year, and have a good 2017.

I'm a Christian and a father, that tract disgusted me severely. You may not be a Christian but what you've done in your charity will be remembered. (I know, bible quotes: _"What you've done for the least of these, you've done also for me."_ ) To be honest, I was kinda hoping _at the very least_ the final part of that comic would have had CPS coming to take that poor child away. _For those that corrupt young children, it would be better for them if a millstone were tied to their neck and then they were cast into the sea._

Augustine could not have been a Roman Catholic Heretic since the Roman Catholic Church did not exist in the way you perceive it to be during the 4th century of our era. Certainly, you may not agree with everything he taught but what you profess is also different, yet, I don't call you a heretic. I won't change your mind anymore than you'll change mine. This video is really about Jack Chick's treatment of the character of the father. The man needs to be thrown in prison. Even though he filled out his cosmic paperwork with Christ, establishing his faith and conversion, he must pay for the crime. If you had a daughter and discovered that some bloke sexually molested her, I highly doubt you'll be like: Well, he gave his life to Christ so I forgive him...go ahead and start preaching the gospel. No, more than likely you'll forgive him (as a Christian should) and then call the police and allow justice according to our law to be served. That, or you'll beat the crap out of him and then call the cops...which, I admit, I would probably do.
Have you ever thought about how bizarre the crucifixion story is? Imagine the all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the universe sitting on his magnificent throne in heaven. He looks down onto earth and says to himself:

Since I am all-knowing I know exactly what the humans are doing and I understand exactly why they commit each sin. Since I created the humans in my own image and personally programmed human nature into their brains, I am the direct author of all of this sin. The instant I created them I knew exactly what would happen with every single human being right down to the nanosecond level for all eternity. If I didn't like how it was going to turn out, I could have simply changed them when I created them. And since I am perfect, I know exactly what I am doing. But ignore all that. I hate all these people doing exactly what I perfectly designed them to do and knew they would do from the moment I created them. I HATE IT! I tried killing all the humans and animals once in the flood. That certainly did not fix the problem.
So here's what I am going to do. I will artificially inseminate a virgin. She will give birth to an incarnated version of me. The humans will eventually crucify and kill the incarnated me. That, finally, will make me happy. Yes, sending myself down and having the humans crucify me -- that will satisfy me. I feel much better now.
It makes no sense, does it? Why would an all-knowing being need to have humans kill himself (Jesus is God, after all) to make himself happy? Especially since it is a perfect God who set the whole thing in motion exactly the way he wanted it? The whole story of the crucifixion is absurd from top to bottom if you actually stop to think about it.

Someone might have already mentioned this to you, but to be fair to the Southern Baptists, AFAIK Jack Chick is a Pentecostal. The most succinct Chick example of how the Pentecostal religion is flawed, was a tract about two characters in the Old West. Black Bart, a murderer, repents and goes to heaven--the sheriff, unsaved, who caught Black Bart, dies and goes to hell. Good works? Nope! Just pray to God (in our very specific way) and get saved!
Well said David, it is also a fact, that when Jack Chick began to print the Alberto series of Crusader comics and the "Are Roman Catholics Christians"? tracts, the Southern Baptist Churches, along with most all
the other once Protestant churches, stopped buying His tracts and began to reject Him and His tract ministry. Even "So-called" Christian Book stores
stopped selling His material, or kept it tucked away in a drawer so as
NOT to offend anyone, while still selling them to those who asked for
them,( so as NOT to lose any revenue) all the while denouncing His Anti-Catholic stance as well as His Homophobic, Anti-Muslim, Anti-Sinner's tracts, the list goes on and on. There are a few Southern

bowed the knee to the pope, as I said earlier, although, those that have

Ties into the Catholic themes very well. Unfortunately most comic writers seem too afraid to explore those themes.

There's a Plot hole in this thing as wide as the "Gaping Maw of..." - who is Lisa's SISTER...!? Twice in the tract there is reference to at least one other daughter. Now, the neighbor and doctor only mention Lisa, but the mother mentions the other daughter twice, early on telling them -daughters in plurar - to do the work, later when she goes over her own abuse and how she beats them for it... Is her sister older, younger...? Hopefully they won't hurt her also, just coz Mr Chick forgot to draw her in at the end...
I've watched and enjoyed many of your videos, but this one sir, is why I subscribed. That ending was courageous, inspiring, beautiful, and reminded me that not all hero's need to wear capes, tights or whatever the hell they wore in the '90s. Also, the biblical translations approved by the catholic church are all based on the latin vulgate, where as protestant translations like the NIV are based on manuscripts older than the sources used to produce vulgate. So its hard to say the catholic church is the source of protestant bibles as they are substantively different, and even the books canonized by the council of Trent were the books which were popular at the time. So its hard to say Catholicism specifically is responsible for those ether.

Discovered this a few years back and actually went into it thinking it was good. I had convinced myself the whole thing was a dark satire or an allegory that would come together at the end. Then I got to the end and was like wait that's it? THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HAPPY ENDING?!?!? what a trip

So I started watching this thinking "oh I love chick-tracks, they're so disturbingly hateful" but I had to stop watching this video half way through because it went further than even I was prepared for. So, if you're stats say "people watching this video bugged out at 11 minutes" its because the Chick Track is so awful I felt sick and angry and had to move on to the next video.
Which reminds me a bit about how powerful comic books can be, and how underestimated they can be at conveying information for good or ill. So with that in mind I have a concept I'd love to hear your opinion on, broadly speaking censorship and comics. Big budget movies never got the heavy handed censors that comics did, and I think thats in part because commercial investors prevented big budget films from being too far from the commercial center. But comic books don't have that huge financial upfront cost, and can convey information just as well or perhaps better.
I'd really be interested in your take on the Boiled Angel case, and if you can find a copy, maybe review that comic since it is so historic ('only artist in america to ever be forbidden from making art') and I'd like your views on why comics attract censors the same way music, video games and movies do but with comics historically the censors get much more power.

I think this story shows that doesn't it? He's allowing pedophilia to be okay in this story. God somehow doesn't inspire him to confess to the police but he just says he's not a pedophile. Growing up, my local neighbourhood video store would provide a VCR with the rental of five (maybe seven) movies at full price. It was a way to promote movie rentals in a community where VCR ownership was still in it's early days. It didn't take long, though, before everyone had their own VCR in their homes. We used to have to add our names to a waiting list for popular new arrivals. Movie rental was a money making machine back in the day.
I recall it being available in the 1990s. Not in the early days of video rentals (the 80s) but some people who had recently moved to a city might not have a VCR or students. Never recall it being free. As I recall it was $10 for 3 days but VCRs were around $200 at the time. Solved the problem by getting a computer with a DVD player in 1997 which had a bigger screen (17") than my 13"-TV. Which also solved the fact that only two rental place had English films.
I remember getting these from some houses during trick or treating and I gotta say that remains the true horror of Halloween.

And it was more about the rich man not using his money and resources to help those who have nothing then it was about Hell.

It makes me uncomfortable to see stranger's faces unblurred when they might not know they're being filmed and put online, especially in times of hardship, but taking people food and clothes means a lot. Jack, can I give you something to really think on?
Please lay all your feelings about organized religion and just think for a minute; a friend sacrificed himself in the most humiliating way and he did all of that just to save you from what you ultimately deserve which is death. Is that not real love? How would you respond to such a thing? Think of it another way, someone you knew was longsuffering with you enough to put up with you stabbing them in back constantly and he still wanted you to be saved. That back stabbing is your sin, your wrongdoings. How many lies have you told? How much porn have you watched? Have you stolen anything, even something small?

Here is the gospel straight and simple:
1. Admit you are a sinner that can only be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ
2. Believe that Jesus died for and covered all of your sins and rose again.
3. Say to God that Jesus Christ is your Lord and saviour.

Big kick of Chris' earlier content and this one is a fabulous example of the channel - funny, daft (in a good way) terrific analysis of a fringe property and Chris being an absolute legend. I think I've got one of those emotional hangovers but the ending was so sweet it had me grinning.

I remember my friend and I were attending a school at a technical college. We decided to leave some tracts in the break room for anyone who wanted them. One day we went to have lunch and we found that someone had left a bunch of Chick tracts in the break room next to ours. I haven't seen them since I was a kid so I picked one up. It was awful! The art was bad, the story was ridiculous, and the doctrine was way off. My friend and I both agreed it was ridiculous. If you want to read Christian fiction pick up a copy of Pilgrim's Progress or a Frank Peretti novel, just skip the the Chick tracts.

... the time and place to witness to someone like Henry is during a prison ministry, not while confronting him on the evidence and testimony against his abhorrent repeated abuse of his daughter.
Another trope of Chick is trying to include so many issues & sins in one "story" that they become so conflated & muddied that it looses all the gusto intended and only people who hear those topics associated with each other on a regular basis in Christian media and sermons aren't confused by the bizarre mixture.
I was given this by an old Vietnamese lady outside my elementary school when I was like 6, she kept saying “people think it’s a joke but it’s not a joke” and she was genuinely using these as religious recruitment material on very small children. It’s always been a cloudy, distant memory, this is the first time since then I’ve ever seen these things and I’m even more annoyed by that ladies actions now than I was at the time.
