  • Maurice Bishop (29 May 1944 - 19 October 1983) was a Grenadian revolutionary and the leader of New Jewel Movement - popular efforts in the areas of socio-economic development, education, and Black liberation - that came to power during the 13 March 1979 revolution that removed Eric Gairy from office. Bishop headed the People's Revolutionary Government of Grenada from 1979 to 1983, when he was dismissed from his post and shot during the coup by Bernard Coard, a staunch militaristic element in the government, leading to upheaval.[1] Directed by Estela Bravo. www.estelabravo...

Maurice was the most 'people loving' LEADER I've ever known. He was GENUINE!
I spent many evenings with him and Kenrick on Morne Rouge beach Beach. RIP MAURICE.
Reader, the first day I saw Bernard Coard was the last Sunday before day of campaigning for the 1976 elections at Seamoon. As soon as Maurice introduced him I said to my colleagues, Rex, Russel and Locsley, "I don't like that man" prompting Locsley to ask " Rouse what the man do you" to which I replied "nothing but my spirit just don't go with him". The events of October 1983 proved me right.

Maurice brought better health care , better educational system and more to make Grenada a better . If he was alive today Grenada would of been in a better situation than it is now .

Excellent work. To deal with the political criticisms right off is the way to go. If only the Left we have to contend with elsewhere were as enlightened

If Bishop had not been murdered there never would have been an invasion.

Not true the US was looking for a reason. Which is why they were complaining we had guns as those their country isn’t full of guns, that’s why they were finding fault with Grenada building the airport. They were just itching to invade us due to our relationship with Cuba.

@@karmabutterfly7985 The Reagan administration was worried about the weapons but without the political turmoil caused by Austin and cord there never would’ve been a direct military intervention like there had been. Even with that countries like Britain lambasted Washington for militarily intervening. I think most people don’t appreciate when one country does another how serious it is. Because it’s one thing to back guerrilla group it’s another thing to send under the tanks so to speak. So that decision to send in the Marines was not taken lightly. I remember there used to be a television program in the United States called late night PBS and the Prime Minister was on it Shortly before his murder. He struck me as An intelligent man who like many Of his generation in the third world was seduced by Soviet style Marxist Leninism. Grenada is the English speaking Caribbean, the kind of political skulduggery that Mr. Bishop used to depose Prime Minister Gairy race eyebrows in the region. Mr. Gairy was not Pinochet, He was a corrupt political boss, and the new jewel movement could have removed him peacefully and legally instead of resorting to violence. Sadly when you live by the sword die by the sword.

As a Grenadian who was alive in that era and hearing Ragan speak about FREEDOM & PEACE one becomes acutely aware of the double talk of political aspirants and the way language on the media is used to twist *people's minds and hide the reality.
THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TODAY IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.

We were taught to hate our very own who sacrifice their lives , yet we celebrate those who participated in the tribal war of others(world war).
Monuments are erected for world police men and those who died in world War. Yet our very own are dehumanized by the oppressors and we are taught to do the same .
Emancipation from mental slavery is an appeal that needs to be institutionalized.
