Thanks Ian. We were looking with you as you scanned around for both drone and battery. Good result. FPV is as you've pointed out a completely different type of drone flying and deserves separate attention.
Reminds me of the early Spark days, when the battery was prone to pop out even without hitting a wall 😉 Battery retention clips quickly followed for the Spark and I see are already available for the Avata. Worth the investment 👍
Yet another instance where the battery has ejected from the drone on crashing. Not good at all! Clearly the battery security is not good enough. The battery should not eject except under the most catastrophic circumstances. DJI needs to fix this. In the meantime, you could use cable ties
It’s a tough little drone, but we need to use a battery strap to prevent the battery from ejecting during a crash. I have experienced this several times.
Hi Ian, glad you found it and its OK. Shame it can't be configured to automatically sound the beeper on disconnection. But if the battery has popped out, it would help anyway. I picked up mine last weekend. Crashed it once into a rock at 30mph ... no damage whatsoever. Amazing how robust these are. DJI have really out done themselves on this one. Have fun on hols mate 👍
Problem there would be if you lost signal while it is still flying, as those beeps are actually generated by the motors which would obviously be active in flight.
That’s a tough bit of kit to withstand such an impact and then carry on. Very impressed. I do wish they (all DJI drones) were brightly coloured though … thankfully you have the eyesight of an Eagle 😃
Ha, yes. Cheers Glyn. I think a bit of reflective tape and a powerful torch in the evening is a good back up too.... But very impressed it's flying like nothing happened..
Great video Ian 👏👏. We’re a group of friends with two week old Avatas, called the Drone Seekers. Steve had a SPECTACULAR crash (well 2 actually) which we caught on camera. Like yours, it survived the crashes. I fly with the battery tied in with a cable tie 🤣🤣
Hi Ian, Glad you got it back and all is OK, DJI have released a good one there, have the FPV and going to use the TX and goggles with the Avata. I still have a cursory look for your old Mavic Pro that you lost down in Kent as I am only a couple of minutes away, even in winter its a mass of impenetrable undergrowth.
Dji really need to sort their act out. For a drone this expensive they need to properly retail the battery and also have a second small internal battery that will power a bleeper for a few days. Glad you got your drone back and that its all working ok Ian
I have seen other you tubers who have had the exact same issue with the battery becoming dislodged after a crash. Apparently a simple fix (cable ties each time) but pretty annoying. I should add, great footage up until the crash!
Mad how quickly you found it in that area. I've crashed in a far more open field and spent nearly an hour looking for mine(and that's with the beeping!)
Thanks for sharing and another case with ejected battery. DJI not learned from FPV as I spent hours in corn 🌽 field by searching drone and battery. Luckily always found and very helpful thermovision until battery and drone not cool down 😅 Anyway for Avatar already purchased battery secure plastic part from AliExpress and so far looks promising 👍
Hello Ian, from windy London, U.K. My family is from Malta and I'm glad to see you making the most of this beautiful island. Have you visited the Blue Grotto on the sea front? That would make for some spectacular flying! Pax. Steven.
Yeah the battery popping/getting loose is definetly an issue with it...for WHEN you crash. I double-tapped the break button instead of just pressing it and flew straight into the mirror of the truck I was sitting in while trying to do a "cool" fast approach. It could have gone through the window and whacked me, LOL. It gave a battery-connection warning and the motors stopped but still had visual. Might be wise to get stop extra clips for these batteries.
YAY!!! you retrieved it...... Unlike my flight yesterday under Paignton Pier when I clipped the top of the pier and my Mini 3 Pro became a submarine!!!! DOH!!!!
@@IaninLondon Yup, drone only on the way. Strangely though its not that much cheaper than the standard purchase... Hoping to get the footage from the memory card so will send if you like? Looking on the screen I did look clear... Hay ho, lesson learned!!
@@IaninLondon Yes Ian, it dropped into about 4ft of water but took a fair few minutes to find in the sandy swell. Yes, i dragged lots of sand out 😂. After establishing that machine still flies well, my main concern will be the stability of the battery, i.e. will it start bloating due to the crash? As for securing the battery, I do not know if it feasible with the Avata but I'd opt for a small velcro strap around or over where it sits in the machine. I did this when modifying (butchering) the frame of a Phantom 1 to decrease the stress on the wires of the old plugin batteries. The battery door was sacrificed in favour of velcro.
Time will tell on the battery integrity, but yes, there are clips and fixings available to protect the battery, as ejecting like that will damage the connectors....👍🏻
It’s been reported almost from day 1 about the battery and there are numerous solutions on line so I am a bit surprised that you wouldn’t have installed something. I don’t fly anywhere near as good as you but on my avata I have a very simple Velcro strap which stops the battery from even being disconnected let alone ejected. Also have you tried the free transmission hack it makes a massive difference costs nothing and takes literally seconds to implement. Have not had any transmission issues since this
I wanted to see how well it performed without any battery straps; every model has loads of after market extras but you don't always news them. And yes, I have now added the free txt file addition to the card. Unsure where broadcast this to the RUclips world tho.... Don't want it ruined by an update!
@@IaninLondon My battery security wasn't after market (only one very small piece of velcro) also I obtained the the txt file from you tube. DJI themselves informed me that this wasn't classed as a hack as the onus on frequency permissions is down to local laws and the individual to ensure they comply which does make some sense
It's good to know your done lives another day 👍😀 I had crashed my DJI Mavin Mini into the river once and into the ground when it lost the signal with my phone and bacame uncontrollable. My drone survived both times and I am flying it like nothing happened lol
Glad you've got the drone back Ian. That's good that the prop guards took the bear brunt and they have done the job and it lives to fly another day. By the way, I take it you don't need a spotter where you're flying on your holiday, as obviously in the UK you do. Are the drone rules different to where you are whilst you're on your hols for FPV drones?
Ken sells a really good batter strap. Ken . Yes The original dobo. He’s got what you need. Do you think those goggles will work for a old guy that 63 and wear +3 power reading glasses?
The battery popping out is not that bad, considering that it prevents the drone from absorbing all the energy of the impact. By ejecting the battery, the energy of the impact is better dissipated away from the drone as a whole.
Would it be possible to tie a zip tie around the battery? Could help for next time you hit into a wall.lol. Thanks for sharing Ian. To fast for my old eyes.
The Manufacturer will appreciate the footage and condition documentation along with the resiliency & subsequent performance. They will have to consider how it ejects the battery on impact also.
Wow, those drones take quite a beating. Probably been thought of by someone else, but would it be possible to secure the battery to the drone with reusable cable ties? Failing that, super glue one of those little tracker buttons to the battery so it's easier to find 🙂👍

good to see you were able to recover it. cool drone
Yeah I’ve seen other RUclipsrs have their batteries pop right out after smaller tumbles. They’re adding cable ties to prevent it
Happend to me with my dji fpv, small crash, battery popped out, but I couldn't find it.
Very unfortunate but well located & it’s good that all is well in the end 👍😁🌞🚁

That's an interesting take. Ordinarily I'd do some testing, but maybe not on this one 🤠
You may want to invest into a VIFLY beacon or something similar and yes it does not cost 2 grand , a mere 12 pounds and it always work.😀
