    • @felderup
      @felderup 4 года назад +13

      using standard valves it'll only take a little pressure before they open and allow steam in, it'd slow the motor down. after the valving is fixed, they could use a smaller engine, the torque would be crazy, but the rpm would be pitiful.

    • @josephallred8633
      @josephallred8633 4 года назад +1

      A bigger engine won't make a difference if you keep running out of steam. The problem was in the boiler design. They basically built it inside out and they didn't have enough heat flowing through to boil the water fast enough.

      i was thinking more like the ford flathead model, intake valve side mounted upside down. since they're not subject to fire, they can be made of mild steel. i suppose bash valves would be an even better idea if the spark plug holes were in the right place, then all they'd need is an exhaust valve, but they'd still need the electric starter.
      in either case, they need a completely different boiler style, a steam generator, a second oil pump might be converted into a high pressure water pump for it as well.

  • @daviddevuono7913
    @daviddevuono7913 3 года назад +6

    I was planning on building a steam powered race car in the future. I had some ideas to convert a normal car engine like you did but also had some ideas to get around the lack of power (so you couldn't just get out of your car and just walk to the finish line to win the race) . One of the problems is running pressure through the intake manifold. If you manage to find a steel engine head you won't have to worry about this one but if the head is made from aluminum then the studs that hold the intake manifold will just rip out with the pressure I want to make. The only real difference in power between a steam engine and internal combustion engine is going to be related to the pressure pushing on the pistons is being made outside the combustion chamber. In theory, you make the same pressure that the gasoline creates and you'll have the same torque. The "amount" of steam is related to the rpm or speed of the engine with that same torque. I was going to use a small "steam generator" that uses propane torches placed in a circle around a small metal pipe (a very thick one to handle the pressure needed while also being red hot, because metal becomes soft at high temperatures). Then inject water as needed so the only thing needing to be kept hot is the pipe, no need to preheat all the water you carry. This would fit in the trunk, the gas tank replaced with a plastic water tank like that in a camper, and a BBQ propane tank to run the generator in the cab away from the burners. Not enough heat, add another circle of burners. Possibly up to 1 generator per cylinder. Last modification would be on the cam timing. Because of the compression cycle of the engine, if you timed the cam with a 1-1 ratio instead of a 1-2 (cam to crank rotation) you can open the intake valve every time the piston goes down and open the exhaust valve every time the piston goes up (more like a 2 stroke engine).
    Finally, the reason your car doesn't want to move is because by putting pressure on the intake valves, when the engine has a load on it, the pressure backed up in the intake is actually opening the closed valves and pressing on the pistons coming upwards (because of how the valves open)
    You are doing everything right up until the valve springs are literally the only thing that's moving the car. As soon as you put more pressure in the engine, you're pushing air into the cylinders that the pistons are trying to come up in.

    If you guys ever decide to revisit the steam idea, here's a few thoughts about it. 1) Your boiler is very unsafe, and others have addressed this - so make sure your boiler won't blow up 2) You can re-work the camshaft, so that it keeps the double lobes on the intake, but grind the exhaust lobes so they're round and don't activate the exhaust valves. Instead, drill a hole in the side of the cylinders, so that when the piston reaches BDC, the steam just exhausts through the port, like a 2-stroke gas engine 3) You don't want more displacement, you want less. Steam exerts a huge amount of pressure, and by using just 2 cylinders, you reduce the volume of steam needed, and increase the steam pressure on the 2 active cylinders. If you cut an engine in half, and use the rear 2 cylinders (running opposite each other), that's all you need.

    It was never going to work effectively without a very different cam profile. You want an open inlet valve and closed exhaust when the piston goes down, replacing the combustion with steam. Normally both valve would be closed. Then open exhaust valve and closed inlet valve during the upstroke. It allows full use of the steam power without affecting the power. In the video it was only effectively using some of the steam.

    Try to use water in a closed cycle: use the radiator as a condenser and then push the condensed water back into the boiler with a compressor. This way you will not need to carry much water. Modern steam power uses supercritical steam, which has higher heat and pressures, so all the pipes and condenser must withstand this pressure. You can see the Doble steam car as an example.

Take some advice from the best steam car ever built for ideas how to make it work good. You have to insulate the whole thing. Even insulate the burner all over. Any part of the car that gets hot, is a waste. Insulate any hot part and feed the exhaust back into the system. Only vent what you can't re-condense. Use the radiator on the exhaust and feed water back to tank.

    You'd really want a different cam profile that modified the valves to just have intake and exhaust and eliminate the compression stroke as it's useless in a steam engine. With ultra high pressure steam, the intake would only need to be opened for part of the cycle and allowed to expand for efficiency, but for this type of operation it may as well be open the whole cycle.

    You need to make a new camshaft. The piston is not working in pairs like you said. One is on power stroke the other is on intake stroke. You can make 4 time more power with a custom cam and have a power stroke on every down travel of the piston. You can route the tail pipe outlet in the cheminy to create a draft to increase the draft. Love your videos.

    Well with that type of boiler you would want massively wide pistons. I would recomend a proper tube boiler and maybe around 15 bar of sustainable pressure if a regular engine should handle that hill and keep going for a while on steam. Do check out the Doble Model E for some properly designed steam car from the days before the electric starter. Doble was a very viable option for the richest of people that wanted something that didn't smell and had to be hand cranked. The market for these disappeared but the technology was quite unreal for the time it was made.
