- Genesis 2:8 "And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed". In this story, João (Nuno Pardal) and Pedro (Pedro Sousa Loureiro) live in this garden. What João wants the most is for Pedro to be happy and the only way he found to make that happen is to support him in his escape with Sara (Sara Barros Leitão). On the other hand, Pedro learned how to love João and does not want to leave the garden. But one of them ate the forbidden fruit.

When I was a lad I read a story called "Tonio Kröger" by Thomas Mann. One sentence jumped off the page at me which I never forgot. "He who loves the more is the inferior and must suffer". Life and experience taught me how true these words were.
Also, the one left behind suffers much more than the one who goes away to a new place.

I've watched this a lot of times and I never get tired of it. The story is beautiful, their dialogue is precious and the lovemaking is so tender, passionate and erotic without being cheap. The feelings of love and pain are perfectly combined and presented in the film. Both men are handsome and display a great chemistry. I wish we could have a longer version of this beautiful story someday. Kudos to the creators and thank you for this beautiful film

@@fabioefe well-done film. There is always the risk of the intimate moments feeling "cheap" as Kevin mentioned, and other things. It is brilliant when it comes across as it does here. There is nothing wrong with sex, but love first makes it better. I hope to see a sequel at some point.

Well, this was very poignant and touching. (I am quite the romantic. I always root for love to win, and not be defeated. “Brokeback Mountain” was awful in the way it depicted love. I suppose it was a naturally creative “asthetic” to depict their love as tragic and dramatic, but we, the PUBLIC, want to see that kind of deep and almost impossible love THRIVE, not fizzle out on the vine like some unwatered melon.)

What exactly is the symbolism in the apple scene? I've known this shortfilm for years now and I always come back to watch the apple scene. There's something so intense about it, but I just can't get my mind around what it means...
The apple can have a different meaning for each person. For me, I admit it for the first time in public: it metaphorizes the “disease” that he does not intend to transmit to his love.❤️

Not a happy ending. In my view, that was hallucination, to escape suicidality, he imagines Pedro is there. There is no embrace, its clearly not a happy ending.

Incredible, so sensual and romantic! Beautiful Portuguese film.
Its beautiful mainly because the tender and delicate interplay between the 2 men is craftily portrayed and it doesn't hurt they are both handsome guys. But a lot of the story doesn't make sense. If he's in love with him, then why is he going away with the girl.

It's a play on the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible. Before Adam and Eve took a bite of the apple, they didn't know that being naked was wrong; it was just natural to them. But once they ate the fruit, their nakedness became wrong and they sought to rectify it by hiding. In this short film, João and Pedro love each other and their love is natural and pure; it wasn't seen as wrong to them. But once Pedro ate the fruit, the view of their love was skewed and it became wrong. He sought to rectify it by escaping with Sara. João didn't understand because he didn't eat the fruit; but, he loved Pedro so much that he was willing to let him go and be with Sara. At the end, when Pedro shows up, it's basically his declaration: I know logically this relationship is wrong but I still want it. I still want you, João.

I’m not saying it’s “wrong” myself, I’m just explaining it because why would anyone rectify something that’s different if they love it? He wouldn’t have made the decision to go with Sara in the first place if Pedro didn’t think it was wrong. Besides, the forbidden fruit’s power was knowledge of good and evil, right and wrong. So using the term “wrong” is within context.

I almost ended up with a blue-eyed guy that looks like this one... it would have been my first relationship ever... and guess what I look like the dark-eyed guy... I always cry when I see this because I didn't get the happy ending in my life... it was a disaster.. we had several incredible out of disney dates and then all of the sudden he ghosted me a lot so I gave up after a lot of tries (two years!) ... I later spoke with a friend of his and told me the truth... that he was in love with me but that he let me go because his life was a mess with drugs involved and he really couldn't make me happy... I learned the hard way that love is wishing and doing the best for that person ...

My god the acting in the apple scene is absolutely mesmerizing. The symbolism alone is enough to make this film incredibly interesting but the actors make it absolutely mesmerizing. This is everything I love about short films, one of the most beautiful pieces I have seen in a while.
