this is how instructional video should be done. good job!
Thank you! I do appreciate you saying so!
been Quoted £140 for an oil change on my 280SL
Your explanation and you tube video will let me do it myself for the cost of materials, more than helpful particularly since I only do about 4000 miles a year
Many Thanks
Chris
Excellent, glad to help! ( 140 seems really expensive! Even for a dealership & using synthetic oil. )And 4000 miles is an excellent interval for changes, especially if that translates to about once a year. The owners manual allows up to 7500 miles, but I am skeptical that is often enough.

invested in the tool to remove the top of the filter housing for £6 -
"Invested" is right! A good rule of thumb is that a £6 tool will do a £60 job again & again.

Just acquired a 300SL. This is very helpful! I usually do my own oil changes; a bit different from my 560 SEC (126) or any of the other carsr I've owned. Thanks!
Thank you! Be sure to watch my other R129 videos in the playlist! I have had mine for just over 8 years now, and it has been my daily driver. (about 18-20K miles a year) If you do the tune-up and air filter change the gas mileage actually improves a slight bit. Do go over the things underneath as well, the brake pads and check the ball joints and tie-rod ends.(all the 300SL have to be about 25 years old at this point) And if you find the top latch cylinders to leak over the windshield frame, well there is a triad of videos I made on removing, rebuilding and replacing them. I think you will really come to like the SL the more you drive it.

I can't freaking wait to see how this car turns out!!!
seriously it was that easy? thanks you. great video.. saving me some dollars this year.
Excellent! Changing the oil yourself will also give the peace of mind knowing it was done right. I am always wary of the fast-lube places maybe leaving something off, or not filling completely. DIY is a great way to enjoy your car even more.

Do I use the same procedure for the R129 (500 SL)?
Many thanks!
Thank you for the good instructions. Regards from Germany.
Thanks for replying. I found it, has to open the plastic shelf.
Thanks for the great video very happy
zoubiando It's actually in the credits at the end. Mercedes stuff is under "other car" link on homepage and there really isn't lot of it. Sorry for the confusion.
Alden
Just perfect
Thank you! You are very kind.
I don't think it is the same for the 300E. I had a 260E sedan & a 300TE wagon and they used a spin-on oil filter, not the cartridge insert type like the 300SL.
Alden
Could you help me find the location of the oil plug of 2004 SL600.
Thanks.
No need to jack the car?
What is the most effective way to raise a car?
Hi! Yes, I did jack the car. I have a hydraulic floor jack and steel jack stands that I place under the jack points before getting under the car.. My jack is low enough profile to slide directly under the front bumper, and I slide it back until the lift saddle is under the front cross member, just behind the engine sump. That said, I also have a vacuum suction oil extractor (look for my video on using it on a Honda Element) That works great too, and does not require lifting the car. I generally use that these days, unless I take a car in the garage for other service. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply.
I’m hesitant to use vacuum oil extractors because I heard they do not drain out all of the oil.
I’m thinking of getting metal car ramps to raise the car and attach several axle stands and the spare tire for extra safety.
could you please let me know the size of the key you are using ? Is it 74 mm ?
Hi! The oil filter cap tool is stamped 76/14. I assume it means the inside diameter in mm and the number of ribs. Hope that helps.
Alden
Sorry about the delay. I only have the six-cylinder car, so I am not familiar with the 12-cylinder engine at all. I'm not even sure where to look it up.
Great! but ...who has a carpet in the garage floor?... ;))
easier to vacuum than sweep?
