This is a keeper! Thanks Dylan! I made a few tweaks: 1. Doubled recipe, 2. Used pre-soaked black eyed peas, 3. Swapped uncooked rice for sprouted buckwheat, 4. Cooked for 15 mins (instead of 25 mins), 5. Did NOT add frozen veggies until AFTER beans & buckwheat cooked, then I stirred in veggies & chopped greens together. The heat cooked the veggies quickly without making too mushy. YUMM!!
Your jokes are corny, but they make me laugh. Some vegan cooking channels are too slow/calm, some have too much chatting, yours is quick and to the point and that is what I need to keep moving forward. Keep it going and thanks for your humor and recipes.
I am so happy to have found this channel. I have been buying no salt canned foods at Walmart for about 2 years now. I knew it had to have some kind of health benefit but after binge watching your videos I am so happy with my decision and I will continue buying no salt added foods. Your videos have so much helpful information. Thank you for all your hard work.
I usually listen to the directions and ingredients and might think it sounds good then not try it, but this time I made it , making it on the milder side for my dad who hates hot, and we both just loved it. I was totally blown away. So easy and so good. Thank you.
Hi, made this again this year and have for the past two years 😊 Obviously this is a great recipe! I made it with rice this year instead of potatoes and I think I like it better 😊 I made a double batch, yup 2 of the 6 qt iPods. In one pot I used Jasmin rice ( for the kids)and in the other sprouted brown(for me), both were great 👍 One pot to eat now and one to freeze for when I don’t have time. Make this people!
Hi Dillon and Reebs! Happy New Year! We just had this for our “next meal”...since the pandemic, time is meaningless as are breakfast/lunch/dinner. When 80 y/o husband and I get hungry.... we have next meal!😂😂😂 Anyway, the hoppin’ John is delicious! We are having it with leftover IP cabbage and pumpkin walnut cornbread in Louisiana! Delicious! Thank you!!!
You actually can put a coin under your plate for luck. The collards and beans represent prosperity in the new year as the beans are thought to be coins and the greens resemble paper currency. It’s a delicious and healthy start to the New Year.
I didn’t know the thing about the greens but we always said it was health and wealth because the rice symbolizes health and of course the beans coins it’s interesting to see how many different versions there is of the same thing
@@auntdayskitchen6315 I was just reading an article about traditional new year’s foods that are considered good luck. Noodles, cabbage/sauerkraut, lentils, fruits, and in some cultures certain cakes, fish (herring) or even pork. And when I thought about it, being German, my grandmother would make pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day. My dad would eat herring (he was Scandinavian). It’s interesting to see the traditions. I’ll stick to the WFPB varieties and after this year, we’ll be eating lots of them on New Year’s Day.
@@sobellabg804 Yes in our house it was always black-eyed peas and rice for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day because my mother couldn’t remember which one was lucky so we had to eat them both LOL and then corn beef and cabbage on Saint Paddy‘s day I’d love to find a whole food plant-based version of corn beef at this point I’d settle for just a vegan version for the one day
@@auntdayskitchen6315 there is a FB group called the Seitan Appreciation Society. There are some real artists in there who make all kinds of faux meats with seitan. I know someone has made corned beef before. Recently, I saw some incredible salami, faux Turkey and beef roasts, even “chick’n drumsticks” and vegan charcuterie boards. So someone has definitely made it. We have a “vegan butcher” called The Herbivorous Butcher. They probably make one too.
Just made this tonight, it was so good very flavourful. I don’t have an Instant Pot so I used pre cooked beans and did it on the stove top, came out perfectly. This will be going in my regular meal rotation 😋😉
Made this yesterday! They were out of black-eyed peas at almost every store near me so i just used pinto beans instead,, still turned out delicious , thanks for the recipe!
Looking forward to eating this for dinner! I have it in the instant pot now. I love my instant pot and I really love set it and forget it meals. Thank you both for all you do to make WFPB/SOS meals just a bit quicker in the kitchen. I love your channel!! Love from southeastern Texas!🥰🥰
This southern girl is HAPPY 😃 Totally making this for New Year’s Day 🥳 Might have to chop onions and red bell pepper as TJ is 45 minutes north... Just placed an order on your website!! Can’t wait!! Happy New Year to you and REEB’S🥳🎈🎉
Happy new year to you and Reebs 😎 Of course you’ve come through with a quick, easy recipe to help others navigate their way into 2021! Aaaand with absolutely zero disappointment in your delivery. 😂 You make my heart smile and I am elated for your personal and professional successes. 🥰 Keep oozing awesomesauce! 😘
Just finally made this Hoppin' John and it turned out delicious on this New Year's day yesterday. Had leftovers today, even better... now, I guess we'll see if the good luck holds out, but it sure was yum! Thanks for your great videos and all your awesome, healthful recipes! All the best to you in 2023!
Just made this and holy cow was it good! So easy too! It was my first time ever having the dish, but I know it won't be the last. A new New Year tradition for sure!
Made this today and it was delicious! Changed up the starches, instead of rice I added baby Yukon potatoes and some diced Yukon and then 1/4 cup red lentils(obviously changed the water ratio). Flavors all the same! I did blend some of the soup and add it back in to make it creamier, which is my preference😀 Anyways, I always enjoy your fast dump n go ipot recipes.
It’s nice to know that somethings never change and you’ll still be burning your mouth in the new year LOL I was beginning to think that my family were the only ones that did black-eyed peas on New Year’s we also do on New Year’s Eve but that’s beside the point
Thankyou for this recipe it looks great..I have just put it in my multi cooker... I wonder if you could put the amount of the bags....eg One bag of Trader joe’s peppers? In Australia we sadly don’t have trader Joes so the amount would be great! Love your shows but sad we don’t get your sauces downunder!
No chopped okra (you can get it frozen) with your black-eyes? Bummer! I’ll have to try your version, as it has more things. Alas, it will go in my kettle on the stove … or in a CrockPot. Those are what I have! Good luck! 🍀
True story. First time I ate this was at a New Years pot-luck for work. After we finished the lady who made this asked the group who got the penny? NOBODY had the penny. At least not in their mouths.

Best thing about this diet - apart from the fact that it will make you slim and healthy and who doesn’t want that? - is that it’s amazingly CHEAP. I just bought a 2 kilo bag of green lentils for 2 quid. (That’s weird British currency but, I can tell you, it ain’t much). Dylan, please stop burning your mouth on piping hot food. I have cooked brown rice. I don't have uncooked brown rice. Is it possible to still make it work? Do you just add less water ?
Less water and less time. Easy
We use lentils for good luck. What is the "star dust" you sprinkled onto the stew?

I don’t see the recipe? Sorry!! I’m sure it’s here.....
I scrolled all the way through comments and don't see it either. Guessing it was removed so you would need to purchase their cookbook.
Coins in food just seems like a terrible idea to me. Why do people do that!?
Adding tomatoes doesn't sound right; the acid keeps the beans from cooking - unless you actually like them "crisp" - and less digestible.
I need to pull out my instapot . This is so much quicker.
It's the best!
