Sarah you should definitely try Canson's The Wall marker sketchbook. I'm like you, I tried so many types of paper before b buckling down and using the paper made specifically for markers. And The Wall is the only paper I've tried that's bright white, absolutely non-bleed (you can draw in heavy layers and the ink will not go through to the other side) and non- feathering (the ink doesn't spread beyond drawn lines. I've heard Rendr is good too but is not available in bright white (I've never tried it). There is an artist on RUclips that uses alcohol markers for landscapes. If you're interested I'll find the link and share but I know sometimes there are benefits to trying things on your own. ;-).

Sarah, my landscapes with alcohol markers are all happening in the Ohuhu spiral bound acid free, market pad in 8.9x8.3 size. I love it more than Bristol paper. I've tried multiple pads, until I arrived at the Ohuhu. Love what you're doing!
I feel like there’s not enough videos out there that teach good ways to use markers so experimenting with them is probably the best way to learn about them
I love your comments on process. I think that often, especially for beginners, the easy access to tutorials is more of a hindrance than helpful because then people get stuck in a rut of copying rather than playing.
I have a big box of expensive markers that I received as a Christmas gift a few years back. I tried them and I'm completely intimidated. I'm not going to make recmmendations. Im going to wait for you and your helpful tutorials.

This was very helpful to me. I have been drawing with alcohol markers for many years and I really struggle with landscapes, especially with filling the larger spaces. My art normally has a much more defined look with lots of tiny details. So water and sky can be a big challenge…I loved the idea of changing the direction of the marker strokes to split the background from the foreground.
We got a set of 24 masters touch markers from Hobby Lobby. We haven't done much with them, my wife did a few pieces, but I have been thinking of trying them in a sketchbook I bought because of the way it looks. The paper is only 65 pound, so I have been practicing with colored pencils. You really gave me incentive to get into the markers. . Those pages that you say you had problems with, I would be so happy with. I started watercolor 7 months ago, and last week tried gouache. I was into photography for over 60 years, so at age 75, I decided to try something different since age and Covid makes it hard to travel around and hike like i once did. Love your videos. Your so inspiring.

I really loved your video. When you show us your struggles it gives everyone a feeling that they can achieve better results with practice. I think it is harder using markers when you come from a watercolour background as you are used to blending and very light washes, I come from a pastel background and am used to seeing my marks. I also come from a part of the world with bright sunlight which encourages painting with brighter colours. I really want to try using my markers for on the go quick landscape sketches as I have a terrible habit of taking photos when I should sit down and sketch. Please keep up your videos of your struggles and achievements as they are really inspiring and informative as you can see the path you have had to follow to get to your achievements. I am now going to experiment with my markers and my Inktensive colour pencils due to your inspiration. Keep up the super videos.

No no not, I cannot start on a different medium now. Love what you do with the markers though. I never (almost never) throw out art materials. OK, when they're totally gone or dried out I will but like you I can go back and find things to try again.

I am by no means where I want to be with my art yet but I’m enjoying the journey and trying to be patient with myself! In art school my teacher had us use Canson Transparent Vellum for alcohol markers. The coating is very plasticky, so it doesn't bleed and it's much easier to blend. It only comes in glue bound pads and individual sheets as far as I've seen.
How wonderful! I bought a Grayscale 6 pac of brush tip markers and HATED the brush tip lol. I really think your marker art is beautiful, even that very bold gorgeous tree you drew. I can really appreciate your change in mindset and patience with yourself and how freeing that was with your expiramentstion and wow. How generous is your heart to share a technique you couldn't find anywhere- most people would brand that as their own and keep it to themselves forever! So thank you for sharing all your struggles and successes. I have just recently branches out into oil pastels and I absolutely adore them. They remind me of the countless hours with crayons as a kid. It's been a very low pressure art form for me- I'm not even really looking up tutorials and it feels so nice to not feel the pressure to be good. Still, I do find that I'm lacking direction in where I want to go with it but I'm sure I'll figure it out once I research some artists! Anyways, I hope this isn't too off topic and happy marking! 😆💗
I tried oil pastels a few times and hated them 😆 I don't know what it is...I love drawing, I love oil, in theory I should love them. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way lol. BUT I do use them to sketch on my big oil paintings and add expressive marks. In that sense they just become a drawing tool
holy crap... i came across your channel today while looking for reviews of the etchr bag and wow i'm glad i did. you're instantly one of my top art channels now. now THIS is what emphasis on process over results looks like!! i would end up writing a whole 20-page paper on what this truly means to me, especially in a world where i was brought up on the idea to sell my work than create for the sake of experimentation and learning. thank you for showing us through your notebook and providing us with a very thorough tour through your thought process. i primarily work with colored pencils and blick alcohol markers, and i'm dipping my toes into watercolors, so it's really fun to see markers through your eyes. i do highly recommend crescent rendr paper. i will literally have 30-50 layers of color and it still won't bleed, and blending is truly a dream. keep it up!

Yay, finally! Marker art and specifically landscapes. Thank you so much. I’m a dabbler (can’t call myself an artist), retired and trying to learn watercolor and improve my drawing skills with various media. Lately so wanting to create with markers but find them so tricky and frustrating. I think it’s the vividness of the colors. Please do some more on this subject as you continue.
What a great video, Sarah. I love seeing your journey with this medium! I received a set of Ohuhu markers (not sure how they compare to the ones you have, but Copics are out of my price range lol) so i practiced daily drawing bugs with them for a week, and I hated them. When you said to get yourself some nice pastel shades, it made me realise why I had such a bad experience. Bless Ohuhu, but their smaller colour sets are so bright and bold, layering is near impossible! Definitely gonna try and grab a few lighter shades and practice some more :)

Such an interesting journey, Sarah! I recently bought a cheap set of 48 alcohol markers at the supermarket and I'm loving the experience. I think I made a good choice because I found that I like it and that it's worth investing in a better set. Loved the video ♡
Oh also, LOLLLL, when you said "please don't give me any advice on paper unless you have really used the paper and have a very expert opinion on it" I thought: "BUT WAIT! I do have paper that I have used for months and months and have an actual expert opinion!! But then you grabbed the Stillman and Burns sketchbooks that I was going to recommend!!! I also like their Nova sketchbook, but it is for very particular art as it has grey, black, and brown kraft paper in it. But the markers still work great on the grey and kraft. I know you like working in sketchbooks, so Stillman and Burns is all I have for a recommendation in those kinds of sizes you like for taking with you. BUT, if you ever want to do some larger size pieces with markers and mixed media then Crescent Rendr and Canson The Wall are great for markers.

I think what you said near the end was so very important. It is the struggle and we can't expect it will all come so easily. To know all artist's must keep up the "fight" to learn their medium and to find their way. Yes others may pave some of the way for us, but it is ours to discover on our own. To know others, like yourself admit this vulnerability... is so important.. thanks for this very important video... right now... I am in the struggle with oil paint.. and I am very frustrated.. but I believe there will be times when there will be a kind of breakthrough that will push me forward... so I soldier on
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing your process! I bought a 80 pack of markers, and then couldn't create what I wanted, so gave up and just gave them away! Of course its a skill, and honestly I didn't think it through of how difficult and different it could be. Watching this video definitely changed my mind a little. I'm glad you didn't give up on markers! When you showed the first drawings you did with the color markers I thought they were BEAUTIFUL!! But then again, since I don't know what you were going for I don't know how far off you were and how badly you feel you "failed" at it. We are all our own worst critics though. But yeah, those ShinHan markers are AHmazing aren't they!!!! I've never even touched a Copic, LOLLL!!
I love them so much! I tried a couple copics and other brands but they sit in my drawer as backups. I like the shape of the shinhan barrel the best and the feel of their nibs. And I don’t like brush tips so the fancy brush markers are lost on me
What a great video! I only have a few (yes BRIGHT colours) of alcohol markers. But I have a ton of water-based markers (yes, I am a art supplyhorder), and like you, I have tried to use them, but given up several times. But after watching your video, I can feel the urge to try learning to use them. Starting from scratch and just play. You opened my eyes that markers are a different medium, and I cannot just jump right in. Thank you so much for sharing your journey 😊
Kudos to you Sarah, this kind of video about process is brave and takes guts. Perseverance pays off, better tools, and a whole lot of time, and flexibility. Also challenging "hate and loathe" with any new skill. It is so easy to say, "Here are these markers, a gift for you! (We can also spread "hateful bad and conclusive experiences" by saying something as innocent as, "these didn't work for me".......) Hating something first off, is like trying to pull huge mushrooms imbedded into the cheese of a pizza to be left with torn bits that looks nothing like a pizza, doing this once or twice and saying "I don't like mushrooms, and why do they always seem to put so many on just for me!" ... or in your case with these markers, it was like you tried different smaller mushrooms for the 15th time, cut finely into a creamy pasta dish and loved them. In my experience, I hated the wood plane, and then many years later, was shown how it should work properly and feel like soap in a bath, and then loved it as a favourite. It is the muster to never give up. Keep pushing your limits, and fears in a way. I noticed Sarah, as soon as you let the marker be itself, and you had the confidence to tackle it, was when the marker itself said back to you, "yes this is the quality mark making style I can do best. Let us work together now with your picture in mind!!" (Isn't that the same as cooking and gardening, a false confidence early on, which at least is both stubborn and persistent, but with a "I know I can do this, grow this, make this, as I am a gardener, and I love to cook?!") Have you noticed how hard it is to give away cheap, supplies and tools, that aren't artist quality? It isn't "supply snobbery", rather "a gift could always be encouraging, beautiful, easy and wonderful from the beginning!" (Hence the reason I got my 5 year young nephew cheaper artist quality watercolour paints by Reubans, with 100 percent cheaper cotton paper, and limited his palette to a split primary. I showed him how to let colours dry, and if they mix while wet.) Well I didn't want him to be the one to "turn him off a potentially good painting experience" So if you can't give the worst away, do they end up as landfill? Could we give our worst products and the experiences, to our enemies? Why don't we all just start with a few artist quality materials, always? (I bet paint and tools used to always be "artist grade" less than 100 years ago.) Fighting with supplies that aren't right from the beginning? People sum up drawing the same way, "I can't draw a stick figure" That may be, but can you draw a few lines instead? Co-incidentally, and back to markers; Yesterday, I had a clean out of all "tools", and I placed 3 sets of cheap markers isolated in a box, to give to my 21 year young niece. (I gave them one go. Then I recall using some for some signs to label boxes when I moved house). I will consider my language when I hand her over the "box of my supplies I don't want" or I could hand over some "plausiblity, and some confidence too!" Even if we say "try these" implies a sense of "non satisfaction and possible attempts", or a closing statement "If you don't like these...then pass them on or give them back to me" I also had some disposable bright watercolour markers in the same box, I hadn't liked them. So I looked at them in a new way, pulled them out, used them, dipped straight into the colour range of De Atramantis document ink bottles. Much better! Perhaps now, I will take the markers out, and give them at least 20 more goes... Anyway, regardless, I think this is one of my favourite videos, of yours, as it is straight up, honest open and real. I like how you unpacked the journey for us, a story teller you are. :) It would be hard pressed to match this transparency, by any RUclipsr artist, with their own process, over their own time. ;) In kindred spirit, Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! When I was a kid I loved any type of supply and no concept of how “good”it was. I was driven by such a strong desire to draw my favorite things that I always found a way to make my supplies. It’s a good lesson! Let the passion drive you and find a way to make it work.
You know the old Dr. Doolittle film with the dancing Push me Pull you? That is what art is in your life. You learn things so you know how to throw them away. Don't be afraid to fail. There is no fail. There is only Push me Pull yous dancing.

Sarah, I have watched this so many times. I am struggling with the gift of markers that I was given. So many bright colours and I don’t want to colour in, I want to paint. So I bought a set of Ohuhu pastel markers, thank you for suggesting pastels. Unfortunately there is a very limited number of salty, greyed out green colours as found in the Australian bush, so I am learning much about colour mixing. Also it has a blender in this set and that helps with the colour mixing too. I am still struggling as I do so desperately want a painterly effect. And this is evading me but I am pushing through because I believe it will be so worth it when I achieve that goal. I am not wanting my work to look like a manga or marvel comic spread. I find that very generic and limiting. Thank you so, so much for this video/vlog, every time I watch it I am encouraged with my marker journey.

With Copics the blender pen will help with blending the sky. There is a gal from Australia (kitandclowder) that has online classes that are wonderful for blending etc. It is very different from your style, however the bones are great.
Thank you so much for sharing this! It's incredibly inspiring to see your journey from struggling with markers towards finding a method of working that you enjoy. I've never tried alcohol markers, but I really want to! Seeing your landscape sketches with markers (especially that one you did outside, which I remember as an eye-opener for how markers can be used) has definitely made me more interested in them! I feel like a lot of marker users go for a cleaner or more rendered look, and it's really been your landscapes and Chris Hong's portraits that have made me think about how fun they might be for my artwork. I'm on a bit of an art supply no-buy at the moment, in part because I'm swamped with school, but I'm already lining up marker colors that I want to buy haha.
I feel that frustration you speak of. I have 160 ohuhu markers and finding the right 'three' colors to shade together in the same family is breaking my '''marker spirit''' :( Thank you for this video and I look ff to pt 2.

Really inspiring video. I also find markers really fascinating. I have set of Tombow brush pen with me but I must admit I rarely use them. I have no background or training in art and I just started painting in April 2020 when First wave of covid was at large in India. Like you, I like to paint landscape and I am still trying to figure out watercolour and gouache as medium for which your videos really help me and inspire me. One day, I would try landscape in markers too. Your videos are always delight to watch. Thanks for this one as well.

Yea that was a big lesson, and I've already received a few new colors, much lighter more pastel versions and LOVING it. I feel like I can finally start creating what I want
Marker paper and smooth vellum are the best for markers. The marker paper would be better for landscapes where you have to fill more space, and it wont bleed, you can layer but theres a limit, saturating the paper with dark colors will make it difficult to blend, the lighter colors reactivate the dry dark layers making a mess.
Watching this and practicing a bit with my markers makes landscape sketching seem less intimidating, practice expressive marks and colors before tackling a painting or final piece of art... as Sarah always says, just have fun.
Please consider the Canson The Wall sketchbook It is designed for markers. And whatever you do to it (multiple layers), it does not bleed and is beautiful for blending. I absolutely love mine!
Markers - use like watercolours, light to dark and they layer just like watercolours in that they go darker with each layer of the same colour. Once I worked that out the rest was easy.
Also very hard to find instructional books on Markers. I love your marker work and even the early grey scale stuff is interesting. I would love to have a Sarah Burns marker tutorial book. I would be first in line to buy it! 😊
This was a great tour of your marker experience. I am just falling in LOVE with markers now. I have a new piece coming soon that I am super excited about. I actually really love that first color marker sketch of the Aspen trees you did!
They are so fun! I did love my original aspen drawing but the key point is that I had no idea how I did that...it was just a fluke. Or like something inside me subconsciously did it well...but I want to be able to do drawings I love on command 😂

I want to go into markers, and I loved your video because I felt very the same when I started with normal makers and the strokes were sooo bold and strong !! I think the problem is that "alcohol markers" should not be called "markers" because the differences with normal markers and the way you use them is almost oposite. They should be called other way, because is very confusing while you struggle with "markers" that are not the "markers" you are thinking off, until someone says to you " ohhh, you will never get that kind of blending because you need to use alcohol markers, not normal markers...."
When i work with alcohol markers I use X-pressIT blending card for all my professional work. I also use Neenah classic crest card paper. Even though the markers show through the back X-pressIT is bleed proof. I mske my own sketchbooks with both. Fun video :)
Thank you for the tip! I am currently testing Cresent Rendr sketchbooks which has been a great upgrade (I'll show in future video) and just received a pack of Spectrum Noir which seems really nice. I'll check out the ones you suggested
@@SarahBurnsStudio The Rendr sketchbooks are really fun for experimenting. I've used marker, watercolor, gouache, pencil on them. They are completely bleedproof, take a surprising amount of water and, for markers, offer a surface that is great for blending. The Ohuhu marker sketchbook is also a great bleedproof option that's designed for marker work and allows for more intentional blending. I paint mostly with watercolor or acrylic but have such fun with markers. I'm pushing myself to use them in a very painterly way. Thanks for sharing your journey! Can't wait to see more!
Beautiful style you’re developing!!! Have you tried Derwent Paint Pens? I bet they’d layer well over alcohol and are also water soluble before they fully dry. I could see you making some great pieces with those too. (And no, I don’t work for Derwent! lol But seeing as they aren’t far from you, maybe they’d send you samples for a review if you don’t own any.)
Just a tip for your marker journey go for brush tipped markers first I find you get more fluid and expresive lines than you do with the bullet tips but bullet tip markers do have their uses
I just started using them. I got the ohuhu 48 pack to start. Im enjoying it but its definitely harder than i thought it would be to make good art with them
I've yet to make friends with alcohol markers, even though I've tried! My style tends to like the water soluble markers a bit better but even then I haven't quite achieved what I'm after which is fairly loose and impressionistic. The closest I've come to achieving that with alcohol markers is to draw on Yupo paper. Have you tried that?
@@SarahBurnsStudio yeah. It is plastic and layering is next to impossible but lots of blending opportunities and even some erasing is possible. To be honest, I'm not sure how I like it either but it is fun to experiment with. I bought a small artist trading card size pad so I knew I wasn't out too much $$ if I didn't like it. I enjoyed your video and I want to try some new techniques now.

Hey Kimberly thank you! Yes, I can see what I want it to look like in my mind but it also evolves a little each time I paint/draw, so I guess it's a combination. At the moment my goal far outweighs my skills.

I just started watching this video, but I am so curious of your tips! I feel like I am completely stuck with learning painting/ colouring... Anatomy I know how to improve, I've been mostly sketching the whole time since childhood, but each time since when I took art more seriously, I got frightened at the colouring stage. it's a self fulfilling cycle, I don't get the practice because I don't want to ruint he drawing, so i never get better at colors, so I am always afraid of ruining my sketches and abandon them at the colouring stage. I'd like to move past this and I recently bought gouache, so now I'll have some more motivation since it'd be wasteful to just toss it in a corner unused. I hope the mixture of gouache and digital art will give me some variety to help me learn, both mediums being different I hope I'll be able to learn different parts of coloring using both. Edit: After watching the video, your way of painting the landscapes with markers reminds me vaguely of impressionism. Visible strokes, no strive for perfect realism, but rather capturing the feeling of the scene. I really like your streaky skies, it gives them so much personality! With the strokes it looks like everything is flowing

This was very helpful to me. I have been drawing with alcohol markers for many years and I really struggle with landscapes, especially with filling the larger spaces. My art normally has a much more defined look with lots of tiny details. So water and sky can be a big challenge…I loved the idea of changing the direction of the marker strokes to split the background from the foreground.
We got a set of 24 masters touch markers from Hobby Lobby. We haven't done much with them, my wife did a few pieces, but I have been thinking of trying them in a sketchbook I bought because of the way it looks. The paper is only 65 pound, so I have been practicing with colored pencils. You really gave me incentive to get into the markers. .
Those pages that you say you had problems with, I would be so happy with. I started watercolor 7 months ago, and last week tried gouache. I was into photography for over 60 years, so at age 75, I decided to try something different since age and Covid makes it hard to travel around and hike like i once did. Love your videos. Your so inspiring.

I really loved your video. When you show us your struggles it gives everyone a feeling that they can achieve better results with practice. I think it is harder using markers when you come from a watercolour background as you are used to blending and very light washes, I come from a pastel background and am used to seeing my marks. I also come from a part of the world with bright sunlight which encourages painting with brighter colours. I really want to try using my markers for on the go quick landscape sketches as I have a terrible habit of taking photos when I should sit down and sketch. Please keep up your videos of your struggles and achievements as they are really inspiring and informative as you can see the path you have had to follow to get to your achievements. I am now going to experiment with my markers and my Inktensive colour pencils due to your inspiration. Keep up the super videos.

No no not, I cannot start on a different medium now. Love what you do with the markers though. I never (almost never) throw out art materials. OK, when they're totally gone or dried out I will but like you I can go back and find things to try again.

Honestly it's such a huge part of all of our experience that I knew at least a few people would relate!
In art school my teacher had us use Canson Transparent Vellum for alcohol markers. The coating is very plasticky, so it doesn't bleed and it's much easier to blend. It only comes in glue bound pads and individual sheets as far as I've seen.
How wonderful! I bought a Grayscale 6 pac of brush tip markers and HATED the brush tip lol. I really think your marker art is beautiful, even that very bold gorgeous tree you drew.
I can really appreciate your change in mindset and patience with yourself and how freeing that was with your expiramentstion and wow. How generous is your heart to share a technique you couldn't find anywhere- most people would brand that as their own and keep it to themselves forever! So thank you for sharing all your struggles and successes.
I have just recently branches out into oil pastels and I absolutely adore them. They remind me of the countless hours with crayons as a kid. It's been a very low pressure art form for me- I'm not even really looking up tutorials and it feels so nice to not feel the pressure to be good. Still, I do find that I'm lacking direction in where I want to go with it but I'm sure I'll figure it out once I research some artists!

I tried oil pastels a few times and hated them 😆 I don't know what it is...I love drawing, I love oil, in theory I should love them. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way lol. BUT I do use them to sketch on my big oil paintings and add expressive marks. In that sense they just become a drawing tool

holy crap... i came across your channel today while looking for reviews of the etchr bag and wow i'm glad i did. you're instantly one of my top art channels now. now THIS is what emphasis on process over results looks like!! i would end up writing a whole 20-page paper on what this truly means to me, especially in a world where i was brought up on the idea to sell my work than create for the sake of experimentation and learning. thank you for showing us through your notebook and providing us with a very thorough tour through your thought process. i primarily work with colored pencils and blick alcohol markers, and i'm dipping my toes into watercolors, so it's really fun to see markers through your eyes. i do highly recommend crescent rendr paper. i will literally have 30-50 layers of color and it still won't bleed, and blending is truly a dream. keep it up!

I’m a dabbler (can’t call myself an artist), retired and trying to learn watercolor and improve my drawing skills with various media. Lately so wanting to create with markers but find them so tricky and frustrating. I think it’s the vividness of the colors. Please do some more on this subject as you continue.

I received a set of Ohuhu markers (not sure how they compare to the ones you have, but Copics are out of my price range lol) so i practiced daily drawing bugs with them for a week, and I hated them. When you said to get yourself some nice pastel shades, it made me realise why I had such a bad experience. Bless Ohuhu, but their smaller colour sets are so bright and bold, layering is near impossible! Definitely gonna try and grab a few lighter shades and practice some more :)

Such an interesting journey, Sarah! I recently bought a cheap set of 48 alcohol markers at the supermarket and I'm loving the experience. I think I made a good choice because I found that I like it and that it's worth investing in a better set. Loved the video ♡

Oh also, LOLLLL, when you said "please don't give me any advice on paper unless you have really used the paper and have a very expert opinion on it" I thought: "BUT WAIT! I do have paper that I have used for months and months and have an actual expert opinion!!
But then you grabbed the Stillman and Burns sketchbooks that I was going to recommend!!! I also like their Nova sketchbook, but it is for very particular art as it has grey, black, and brown kraft paper in it. But the markers still work great on the grey and kraft. I know you like working in sketchbooks, so Stillman and Burns is all I have for a recommendation in those kinds of sizes you like for taking with you. BUT, if you ever want to do some larger size pieces with markers and mixed media then Crescent Rendr and Canson The Wall are great for markers.

I think what you said near the end was so very important. It is the struggle and we can't expect it will all come so easily. To know all artist's must keep up the "fight" to learn their medium and to find their way. Yes others may pave some of the way for us, but it is ours to discover on our own. To know others, like yourself admit this vulnerability... is so important.. thanks for this very important video... right now... I am in the struggle with oil paint.. and I am very frustrated.. but I believe there will be times when there will be a kind of breakthrough that will push me forward... so I soldier on
Yes exactly! If you keep at it, you WILL get over those hurdles. It might take a while or it might be fast - either way we need to enjoy the journey!
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing your process! I bought a 80 pack of markers, and then couldn't create what I wanted, so gave up and just gave them away! Of course its a skill, and honestly I didn't think it through of how difficult and different it could be. Watching this video definitely changed my mind a little. I'm glad you didn't give up on markers! When you showed the first drawings you did with the color markers I thought they were BEAUTIFUL!! But then again, since I don't know what you were going for I don't know how far off you were and how badly you feel you "failed" at it. We are all our own worst critics though. But yeah, those ShinHan markers are AHmazing aren't they!!!! I've never even touched a Copic, LOLLL!!
I love them so much! I tried a couple copics and other brands but they sit in my drawer as backups. I like the shape of the shinhan barrel the best and the feel of their nibs. And I don’t like brush tips so the fancy brush markers are lost on me
What a great video! I only have a few (yes BRIGHT colours) of alcohol markers. But I have a ton of water-based markers (yes, I am a art supplyhorder), and like you, I have tried to use them, but given up several times. But after watching your video, I can feel the urge to try learning to use them. Starting from scratch and just play. Kudos to you Sarah, this kind of video about process is brave and takes guts. Perseverance pays off, better tools, and a whole lot of time, and flexibility.
Also challenging "hate and loathe" with any new skill. It is so easy to say,
"Here are these markers, a gift for you!
(We can also spread "hateful bad and conclusive experiences" by saying something as innocent as, "these didn't work for me".......)
Hating something first off, is like trying to pull huge mushrooms imbedded into the cheese of a pizza to be left with torn bits that looks nothing like a pizza, doing this once or twice and saying "I don't like mushrooms, and why do they always seem to put so many on just for me!"
... or in your case with these markers, it was like you tried different smaller mushrooms for the 15th time, cut finely into a creamy pasta dish and loved them.
In my experience, I hated the wood plane, and then many years later, was shown how it should work properly and feel like soap in a bath, and then loved it as a favourite.
It is the muster to never give up. Keep pushing your limits, and fears in a way.
I noticed Sarah, as soon as you let the marker be itself, and you had the confidence to tackle it, was when the marker itself said back to you, "yes this is the quality mark making style I can do best. Let us work together now with your picture in mind!!"
(Isn't that the same as cooking and gardening, a false confidence early on, which at least is both stubborn and persistent, but with a "I know I can do this, grow this, make this, as I am a gardener, and I love to cook?!")
Have you noticed how hard it is to give away cheap, supplies and tools, that aren't artist quality?
It isn't "supply snobbery", rather "a gift could always be encouraging, beautiful, easy and wonderful from the beginning!"
(Hence the reason I got my 5 year young nephew cheaper artist quality watercolour paints by Reubans, with 100 percent cheaper cotton paper, and limited his palette to a split primary. I showed him how to let colours dry, and if they mix while wet.)
Well I didn't want him to be the one to "turn him off a potentially good painting experience"
So if you can't give the worst away, do they end up as landfill?
Could we give our worst products and the experiences, to our enemies?
Why don't we all just start with a few artist quality materials, always?
(I bet paint and tools used to always be "artist grade" less than 100 years ago.)
Fighting with supplies that aren't right from the beginning?
People sum up drawing the same way, "I can't draw a stick figure"
That may be, but can you draw a few lines instead?
Co-incidentally, and back to markers;
Yesterday, I had a clean out of all "tools", and I placed 3 sets of cheap markers isolated in a box, to give to my 21 year young niece. (I gave them one go. Then I recall using some for some signs to label boxes when I moved house).
I will consider my language when I hand her over the "box of my supplies I don't want" or I could hand over some "plausiblity, and some confidence too!"
Even if we say "try these" implies a sense of "non satisfaction and possible attempts", or a closing statement "If you don't like these...then pass them on or give them back to me"
I also had some disposable bright watercolour markers in the same box, I hadn't liked them. So I looked at them in a new way, pulled them out, used them, dipped straight into the colour range of De Atramantis document ink bottles. Much better!
Perhaps now, I will take the markers out, and give them at least 20 more goes...
Anyway, regardless, I think this is one of my favourite videos, of yours, as it is straight up, honest open and real.

When I was a kid I loved any type of supply and no concept of how “good”it was. I was driven by such a strong desire to draw my favorite things that I always found a way to make my supplies. It’s a good lesson! Let the passion drive you and find a way to make it work.
You know the old Dr. Doolittle film with the dancing Push me Pull you? That is what art is in your life. You learn things so you know how to throw them away. Don't be afraid to fail. There is no fail. There is only Push me Pull yous dancing.

Sarah, I have watched this so many times. I am struggling with the gift of markers that I was given. So many bright colours and I don’t want to colour in, I want to paint. So I bought a set of Ohuhu pastel markers, thank you for suggesting pastels. Unfortunately there is a very limited number of salty, greyed out green colours as found in the Australian bush, so I am learning much about colour mixing. Also it has a blender in this set and that helps with the colour mixing too. I am still struggling as I do so desperately want a painterly effect. And this is evading me but I am pushing through because I believe it will be so worth it when I achieve that goal. I am not wanting my work to look like a manga or marvel comic spread. I find that very generic and limiting. Thank you so, so much for this video/vlog, every time I watch it I am encouraged with my marker journey.

With Copics the blender pen will help with blending the sky. There is a gal from Australia (kitandclowder) that has online classes that are wonderful for blending etc. It is very different from your style, however the bones are great.

I've never tried alcohol markers, but I really want to! Seeing your landscape sketches with markers (especially that one you did outside, which I remember as an eye-opener for how markers can be used) has definitely made me more interested in them! I feel like a lot of marker users go for a cleaner or more rendered look, and it's really been your landscapes and Chris Hong's portraits that have made me think about how fun they might be for my artwork.
I'm on a bit of an art supply no-buy at the moment, in part because I'm swamped with school, but I'm already lining up marker colors that I want to buy haha.

Really inspiring video. I also find markers really fascinating. I have set of Tombow brush pen with me but I must admit I rarely use them. I have no background or training in art and I just started painting in April 2020 when First wave of covid was at large in India. Like you, I like to paint landscape and I am still trying to figure out watercolour and gouache as medium for which your videos really help me and inspire me. One day, I would try landscape in markers too. Your videos are always delight to watch. Thanks for this one as well.

Yea that was a big lesson, and I've already received a few new colors, much lighter more pastel versions and LOVING it. I feel like I can finally start creating what I want
Marker paper and smooth vellum are the best for markers. The marker paper would be better for landscapes where you have to fill more space, and it wont bleed, you can layer but theres a limit, saturating the paper with dark colors will make it difficult to blend, the lighter colors reactivate the dry dark layers making a mess.
Watching this and practicing a bit with my markers makes landscape sketching seem less intimidating, practice expressive marks and colors before tackling a painting or final piece of art... as Sarah always says, just have fun.
Please consider the Canson The Wall sketchbook It is designed for markers. And whatever you do to it (multiple layers), it does not bleed and is beautiful for blending. I absolutely love mine!

Markers - use like watercolours, light to dark and they layer just like watercolours in that they go darker with each layer of the same colour. Once I worked that out the rest was easy.
Also very hard to find instructional books on Markers. I love your marker work and even the early grey scale stuff is interesting. I would love to have a Sarah Burns marker tutorial book. I would be first in line to buy it! 😊

They are so fun! I did love my original aspen drawing but the key point is that I had no idea how I did that...it was just a fluke. Or like something inside me subconsciously did it well...but I want to be able to do drawings I love on command 😂

I want to go into markers, and I loved your video because I felt very the same when I started with normal makers and the strokes were sooo bold and strong !!
I think the problem is that "alcohol markers" should not be called "markers" because the differences with normal markers and the way you use them is almost oposite. They should be called other way, because is very confusing while you struggle with "markers" that are not the "markers" you are thinking off, until someone says to you " ohhh, you will never get that kind of blending because you need to use alcohol markers, not normal markers...."
I just don't plan on using them the traditional way I guess. I like bold messy marks!

When i work with alcohol markers I use X-pressIT blending card for all my professional work. I also use Neenah classic crest card paper. Even though the markers show through the back X-pressIT is bleed proof. I mske my own sketchbooks with both. Fun video :)

@@SarahBurnsStudio The Rendr sketchbooks are really fun for experimenting. I've used marker, watercolor, gouache, pencil on them. They are completely bleedproof, take a surprising amount of water and, for markers, offer a surface that is great for blending. The Ohuhu marker sketchbook is also a great bleedproof option that's designed for marker work and allows for more intentional blending. I paint mostly with watercolor or acrylic but have such fun with markers. I'm pushing myself to use them in a very painterly way. Thanks for sharing your journey! Can't wait to see more!

Beautiful style you’re developing!!! Have you tried Derwent Paint Pens? I bet they’d layer well over alcohol and are also water soluble before they fully dry. I could see you making some great pieces with those too. (And no, I don’t work for Derwent! lol But seeing as they aren’t far from you, maybe they’d send you samples for a review if you don’t own any.)

Just a tip for your marker journey go for brush tipped markers first I find you get more fluid and expresive lines than you do with the bullet tips but bullet tip markers do have their uses

I've yet to make friends with alcohol markers, even though I've tried! My style tends to like the water soluble markers a bit better but even then I haven't quite achieved what I'm after which is fairly loose and impressionistic. The closest I've come to achieving that with alcohol markers is to draw on Yupo paper. Have you tried that?
No - I haven't yet, but I'm kind of curious. But isn't like a plasticky kinda surface? I'm not sure how well that would allow layering?
@@SarahBurnsStudio yeah. It is plastic and layering is next to impossible but lots of blending opportunities and even some erasing is possible. To be honest, I'm not sure how I like it either but it is fun to experiment with. I bought a small artist trading card size pad so I knew I wasn't out too much $$ if I didn't like it. I enjoyed your video and I want to try some new techniques now.

Hey Kimberly thank you! Yes, I can see what I want it to look like in my mind but it also evolves a little each time I paint/draw, so I guess it's a combination. At the moment my goal far outweighs my skills.

I like to tear paper with acrylic matte medium so the markers blend better without bleeding in regular sketchbooks.

I’ve used rendr by crescent no bleed through no show through paper, take it for what it’s worth but I think you’ll love it , it won’t be one you regret purchasing and using,!be used it for years and I’m in love with it I think you will as well , good kuxk

I just started watching this video, but I am so curious of your tips! I feel like I am completely stuck with learning painting/ colouring...
Anatomy I know how to improve, I've been mostly sketching the whole time since childhood, but each time since when I took art more seriously, I got frightened at the colouring stage. it's a self fulfilling cycle, I don't get the practice because I don't want to ruint he drawing, so i never get better at colors, so I am always afraid of ruining my sketches and abandon them at the colouring stage.
I'd like to move past this and I recently bought gouache, so now I'll have some more motivation since it'd be wasteful to just toss it in a corner unused. I hope the mixture of gouache and digital art will give me some variety to help me learn, both mediums being different I hope I'll be able to learn different parts of coloring using both.
Edit: After watching the video, your way of painting the landscapes with markers reminds me vaguely of impressionism. Visible strokes, no strive for perfect realism, but rather capturing the feeling of the scene. I really like your streaky skies, it gives them so much personality! With the strokes it looks like everything is flowing
