  • 907Britt.com This song taught me a thing or two about compassion, songwriting, waltzing, and even history. It has been a favorite since I was a little girl, though I see new depth in it every year as I grow. Recorded live April 30, 2010 at The Bean in Friday Harbor, Washington.
This song by Eric Bogle is also known as William McBride. I learned it from folk trio Bok, Muir, and Trickett. I would like to record it with the same ad-hoc folk trio I put together for Captain Harris. I love a good folk trio.

Very moving, very well sung. At first I thought oh no, not another one, but I actually listened all the way through - I don't do that very often. I should start singing that song again, too.

Thanks. That was a while ago and I'm a better singer now. I wrote to Eric Bogle and he was very nice, and said he always loves it when women sing that song.

Great story, I regret never having seen the man. Thanks for reminding me of the song. I have just recorded and uploaded it (on my other channel, this one is for concert videos). I have mentioned you in the description. ruclips.net/video/D0kYWRFiyjk/видео.html

A lovely interpretation of the song and lyrics, and well sung and well played. You're up there with the Corries. It took a while to find, silly me. It seemingly goes under the titles of Willie McBride, William McBride, The Green Fields of France and No-man's Land.

I'm very late to the party, but I was about to say the same thing. At last someone who sings the song the way it was originally written, as June Tabor did so powerfully back in the day. Substituting the clouds for the plough is no big deal compared with some of the versions I've heard. Nice work.

Peter harig the lyrics are NOT false..... Check the lyrics on the singer/songwriter's website...... You will see 907britt has almost all lyrics right. Only some changed..... But, like the man himself said some people do change the words. eg: Slim Dusty changed gen to friend in another one of this singer/songwriter's song.

@HaakonTheViking thanks for the clarification! I suppose "under the plow" is a better line there. I learned this song by ear and probably misunderstood the words, or perhaps the band I learned it from, Bok, Muir, and Trickett, used clouds? Thanks again for the feedback.

@88Hungrigerwolf... what do you mean by "false?"

It's not called William Mc Bride... It is No Mans Land

You are correct. That is why I fixed the video title.

I really like the way you play-- I'm learning to play guitar and I can play most chords such as D, C, E, F, Bm, etc... but the strumming pattern you use here is something I don't know yet. Could anyone point me to a guide or youtube instructional on how to do it? I'm sure it's nothing too extravagant. I'm guessing you have to be pretty accurate strumming the top string then the bottom strings as she does.

Hi.... to put it in a nutshell, it's a syncopated waltz pattern I developed over many years: in this case I was not using a pick, and fingerpicking the Ovation. So my thumb hits down on the 1 and then on the 2 my index and middle fingers both grab up, then to embellish back and forth using the front and backs of my nails... I actually don't even play this way any more, as I use a pick now... hope that helps.

I think you repeat a verse at 0:17, you sing:
I've been walking all day in the warm summer sun
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done

    • @BrittArnesen
      @BrittArnesen  7 лет назад +1

Thank you for taking the time to pay so much attention. The lyrics repeat on purpose, as a poetic effect. We do this a lot in English, perhaps not so much in your language but this is correct and as a native English speaker I find it to be a quite beautiful repetition to use that phrase twice. The writer did a good job on this song.

An american interpretation of a european song... I have no issue with it... if this was part of "charles stanley came down from the mountain" it would be stellar... God bless

Peter Harig Sorry, mate, but what the stuff do you mean by false lyrics???? Check out Eric Bogle’s original composition!!!!! I think you will find you are barking up the wrong tree, mate!!! Perhaps learn a little more about the history behind this wonderful song before you make more moronic comments.
