Larry, I love this series! I can't believe how much I look forward to your reviews of processed food! Once you had completed the sloppy Joe recipe, it really looked quite tasty! I was wondering why anyone would ever buy it canned though, when in the same store is probably found fresh ground beef. Then you answered that. Emergency use! Wow! What a long shelf life! I really enjoyed this! Thanks for what you do!
+Juanelo1946 John, this 'What are we eating' and 'Budget meal' series is really turning into very fun things to do. Quite a bit of thought and research is required, but it's fun so it doesn't seem like work!! I have a lot of Keystone canned meats in my LTS stash. Ground beef, shredded beef, shredded pork, chicken and turkey. All are good. I remove most of the solidified fat before heating it. Works better for me. Unfortunately prices have really skyrocketed in the last couple years.

We use Keystone Meats for our emergency food storage and we rotate through them by using a can per week. They're very good for canned meat and it's nice to have an easy dinner option once a week too. I like to use the fat from the meat to saute my aromatics like the onion and the broth from the can to build a sauce...very versatile. The ground beef makes a number of really good dishes but my favorite is spaghetti with meat sauce. A couple of 28oz cans of Red Gold crushed tomatoes (89cents/can) make the sauce and a pound of Creamette thin spaghetti (49cents) rounds it out. For a little under $9 you get 6 good sized servings for $1.50/serving which is a lot more reasonable than freeze dried entrees that aren't really any better. Of course fresh meat is better but this is darned good too and we'll happily gobble it up during an emergency and on a weekly basis as we rotate through our supplies.
Columbus verɪfɪed The only country that comes close to us in terms of sketchy food is China. Which sucks considering a bunch of our food also comes from China. Europe, South America, even Africa have better food.

Love the Keystone meat products. They are great for just the two of us being seniors now. Easy to divide to make more than one kind of dish per can. I especially like to use the shredded beef to make a pot of soup and or to make beef and noodles with a mountain of mashed potatoes when the grandsons visit. So easy to throw together and really satisfies their hunger. I also typically reserve a bit for myself to make a sandwich using soft white bread, Miracle Whip and dill pickles. My younger grandson likes the broth for “bread-sop”. The canned chicken is really good in a variety of soups, for burritos, in noodles or turned into chicken salad. I used part of a can of the pork on top of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes one day last week. Another portion made good pork BBQ topped with shredded Swiss cheese on waffles for my husband. There’s so many things to make with those canned meats.
If you have a pressure canner and some mason jars, you can can your own ground beef. I do it occasionally. I find the texture a bit too tender but it is good to have in a pinch. I mainly use it for chili or a quick bolognese tomato sauce.
Treat it like you have cooked a roast to shred. You make pulled pork by adding bbq sauce, Mexican by adding can of rotel/chili, salsa, chopped onion and serve over rice or make into tacos, just heat to make hot pork sandwich, whatever your family likes. I think keystone websites has suggestions too.
@@RoySpray I live where they locally raise this stuff.they also supply meat to a famous hamburger local chain called kewpee hamburgers.i had the pork canned Tonite as BBQ pork.the beef is great if u make beef n noodles w gravy.
Nice you've found this. This is my "go to" emergency food. It's versatile and lasts a long time. Plus, great for camping trips! I usually throw the meat in with some rice, add a little hot sauce and eat it that way when I'm camping. I'd probably do something totally different in an emergency scenario.
I pressure can ground beef, chicken, and almost everything else under the sun when they are on sale. I just ate some chuck beef I canned with mashed potatoes and gravy and he meat was so tender. (paid 1.99 pound on sale a year ago )
We buy this for our long term food, and occasionally use it in sauces and sloppy joes. we pay 6.50 to 7.50 per can which is just a little more than fresh ground.
Does anyone remember the "Government Subsidized Food"? These (Keystone Canned Meats) are exactly the same. And Yes, Very good for "survival preps", The canned ground beef and the "Bear Creek" chili mix is very good. (imo)
Randy Mathews i live in hurricane alley in the caribbean. I have to buy canned food every season and I eat it so that the money doesn't go to waste, this stuff seems like i could stand it. There is only so much cornbeef, spam and tuna a man can take
When shtf last spring I went full prepper and canned/dehydrated a lot of meat. The canned ground pork and beef gets a little grainy but simmered for a while or used in shepherds pie is indistinguishable from fresh, and even with the fat content is good for a couple of years in a cool pantry.
Whenever I feel hungrier than I should, I just watch your 'Sweet Sue Chicken in a Can' video and within three-minutes, my appetite vanishes. It's like magic. Should be a breeze to lose those pesky twelve pounds providing no one takes down that video. Thanks, my man... and good job!
Very interesting. Have you ever seen canned bacon? K-Mart used to carry it in the 1980s, imported from... Hungary? I can't recall. It came uncooked (not sure) in a can packed in paper. My family used to swear it was the best kind of bacon they'd ever had and best canned meat we ever found. . Anyway there is a simpler version of this recipe. You can get a very good sloppy joe with onion, more ketchup that was used here, and a tablespoon or so of wet yellow mustard. 4 ingredients. The ketchup covers the brown sugar and part of the worcester flavors (I admit, worcester would add some complex flavor notes) while wet yellow mustard covers the vinegar and of course the mustard flavor. Add pepper to taste. It is very simple but the results are a winner. It is interesting to me you can take what is basically a hamburger with ketchup and mustard and onions and prepare it differently and end up with something very different. That tells you, how you cook something matters a lot.
Love your videos, great sense of humor and I dig that you try all of the things that I see at the store, but never have the balls to actually try them. But then again, I've opened many a can of crap late at night and been satisfied.
Canned meats have a longer shelf life than fresh cut meats, you have to prepare them within a certain amount of days if refrigerated, or a few weeks when frozen or it will get ice burnt, Plus if you go camping, it's good for that or if you live in the woods.
It does make a lot of difference who the processor of the product is. Keystone is decent, the brand that is supposed to be "Amish" and therefore wonderful Yoder's is NASTY. High salt and an "tinny" taste. We have a nearby small meat packer who does their own brand, Grabill that we really like: low sodium and a fresh taste. They also raw pack and then process the cans which makes a small amount of rich broth. The amount of fat you had on the ground beef seems excessive, kind of making up the weight of the product with fat. By the way, don't know if you have tried the Yoder's canned bacon on your reviews yet. It is not a bit like the 1970's Dak's canned bacon Dad bought for our family camping. Not bad stuff after you browned it up, though I always thought it was gross coming out of the can!
I agree the Keystone was surprisingly good. Once the fat rendered I really didn't mind it or think it was much more excessive than normal 80/20 ground beef. The one think I didn't particularly care for was the texture. I want to try the Yoder's bacon soon. Thanks for watching!
I use Keystone Canned Meats for prepping. However, I also have no hesitations about using them when I just don't wanna cook the hamburger meat for certain casseroles or for my nacho cheese sauce. Sometimes even my spaghetti sauce. The Keystone canned turkey and chicken meats are awesome too.
+michael landry Canned foods that won't kill you are too hard to find Mike, I had to ensure I didn't ruin that with another canned product that is full of salt!! LOL
I have had this ground beef a few times. Its pretty good when fresh. But not near as good if you have any left overs for the next day. I keep buying it. I have more than a few cans stocked up. The shelf life is almost 5 years. With a shelf life of 4.5 to 5 years its great to have for emergency. I have had my cans for quite awhile and the date on the one i just checked is 4-12-2024
The canned beef is great for beef and noodles.never had the ground beef.its local raised in my hometown.walmart has it cheaper than the meat store keystone meats.
Keystone also makes beef pieces in a can. Beef and sea salt. Nothing else. I ran across this on Alaska Prepper's youtube video. He shows how to prepare foods for long term storage. Very interesting material. He critiqued this beef and according to him, these cans would last years beyond the use by date on the can, although he does recommend storage in a cool environment. Thanks for your video!!!
@@humpheadsassy4400 3g of salt in 800g of meat is negligible. I probably add way more than that when I make a stew. Then again I'm Italian and apparently we eat a lot of salt, around 4.5g per person per day.
I totally agree with you! It would be perfect for MREs, and I appreciate you turning me onto that. I do look for quick fix meals at times too, and that is not bad for you like you said. Thank you for being our Guinnea Pig! We appreciate you!
I always keep a few cans of those in the pantry. My local grocery store sells mince made with previously frozen parts, so unless I'm making something in a large batch or eat it for a few days in a row I always end up throwing some away because I can't re-freeze it. BTW, congrats on reaching 100,000 subs mate! You deserve it!
Totally misleading to call the product 'Sloppy Joe' when it clearly isn't - you needed to add about 6 other ingredients to make it what you expected. And I don;t think most people would have the common sense to drain off the fat! Good video though, thank you.
I'd go with TVP before this. Indefinite shelf like, easy to prepare, takes on favors just great. Also a good source of fiber. It's just textured soy. I've made sloppy joes, tacos, shepherd's pie with TVP and all turned out great. Give it a try and I think you'll axe the canned ground meat.
Might be useful for making travel food. We don't camp but have done some picnic & hotel room cooking. There are so many things you can make with ground beef. Our local grocer's web page show it available but about twice the price of fresh GB.
Nice review. I am sure I would put this in the emergency food supply closet, but I don't think i would eat it as an every day item. Overall great video and review ;-)

I've tried the Keystone All Natural Beef which is OK but has a weird gritty texture which keeps getting caught in my throat. Nearly choked a couple times. Don't know why but my dogs refuse to touch it. I bought a few more just in case of emergency since it's only $4 right now for 28oz. I've also tried the ground beef version and it's delicious.
Great job, Larry. I've actually considered purchasing this before for ease of cooking on the truck. I just can't bring myself to spend that much money. It's $6.99 a can here. Great review
All of the keystone products I have tried are very good. The beef and pork look and taste (and are in a nearly identical can) like the old USDA commodities. I haven't tried the chicken as there are cheaper canned chicken options, though none with an "advertised" 5 year shelf life.
This was a very good review of a product that I've never heard of before. If Keystone brand canned ground beef ever makes its way to Ontario, Canada, then I'll definitely buy a case for emergency purposes. On a side note; I'm glad to see that you replaced the skillet you used in your Jan'16 review of the "Breakfast in a can". I cringed at the sight of the compromised teflon ;-)
Very helpful. I happen to have a can of this. I think I'll heat it up as you did, skim off the fat and add onion, garlic, spices and a can of chili beans to make chili con carne. 😊
Canned cooked mince is awesome! Great for baked potatoes. Baked potato, home made coldslaw, cheese, this meat (heated) and sour cream is delicious! Add other ingredients to them too. Also can be just heated and put on pasta for a simple pasta dish. EDIT: Wow that looked way different to what I expected when you opened it. The ones I buy look just like cooked mince in a kind of beef gravy (Not the milk type). Also the one I am thinking of is a meat sauce for pasta. It looks like your end product without the onions.
I have purchased the chicken and put it in a slow cooker with noodles for about 5 hours on low. Turned out perfect and I fed it to people at work. They were impressed.
Lol, you're so funny :). Love your videos. I started buying this when they aren't sold out at Walmart. It can be ordered through Amazon too. Great pantry item! Chicken, turkey and beef available from the same company.

Hey Larry, I don't think I have seen this at our store. Will have to check. At the end it did look good. Enjoyed the review.
+Tess Cooks 4u I have seen it at Walmart. I bought the roast beef and hubby used it for making soup when I was sick !!
+Tess Cooks 4u Tess, the thing that surprised me the most was the amount of sodium and other garbage ingredients that most canned items have! Thanks for watching!
+Susie Thomas I just found they have a lot of other meats too after you mentioned that Susie!! Thanks!
I have a lot of Keystone canned meats in my LTS stash. Ground beef, shredded beef, shredded pork, chicken and turkey. All are good. I remove most of the solidified fat before heating it. Works better for me. Unfortunately prices have really skyrocketed in the last couple years.
That's actually a pretty amazing shelf life despite the lack of preservatives besides salt. Should be the perfect zombie apocalypse food.
I tried this a few years agu and it smelled. looked and tasted like dog food. IT WAS INEDIBLE !!!!! READ THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON AMAZON NOT THE PAID EMPLOYEE REVIEWS !!!!!

The fact you were shocked (in a good way) to see only two ingredients on the back for only canned beef really says something about america

The only country that comes close to us in terms of sketchy food is China.

Thanks for this. I was curious and now I'm adding it to my emergency supplies
I am a big fan of your commentary and delivery a very calm and comedic approach
Thank you for putting yourself out there for us as I was always curious about canned meat.
Thanks for watching!
If you have a pressure canner and some mason jars, you can can your own ground beef. I do it occasionally. I find the texture a bit too tender but it is good to have in a pinch. I mainly use it for chili or a quick bolognese tomato sauce.
+Carolyn Miller I wish I was more into canning.....I appreciate the people that do it, but it's just not for me. LOL Thanks for watching Carolyn!
Try other keystone meats..I use the cubed beef and the canned shredded chicken all the time
Yes, I've been thinking about trying them! Thanks Pam!
I would love you to do a review on the pork. I just got a can as a joke gift from my wife as a valentines gift. Give me some inspiration.
I do take the fat out.
Nice you've found this. This is my "go to" emergency food. It's versatile and lasts a long time. Plus, great for camping trips! I usually throw the meat in with some rice, add a little hot sauce and eat it that way when I'm camping. I'd probably do something totally different in an emergency scenario.
Home Pressure canning all day long.
Watch out for botulism
(imo)
I only remember seeing the canned pork...that never got used
mharris1270 actually, the pork heated up and eaten wasn't bad at all... I'd eat the beef too if given the chance
i actually really like your older videos youre way more informative but the energy you have in your new videos is good too
DO A VIDEO ON THEIR PORK! I seem to be interested in this company, you gave a review that peeked my interests

Randy Mathews i live in hurricane alley in the caribbean. I have to buy canned food every season and I eat it so that the money doesn't go to waste, this stuff seems like i could stand it. There is only so much cornbeef, spam and tuna a man can take
It will be hurricane alley in your toilet if you eat that stuff! Yuck!
LOL.
lol
When shtf last spring I went full prepper and canned/dehydrated a lot of meat. The canned ground pork and beef gets a little grainy but simmered for a while or used in shepherds pie is indistinguishable from fresh, and even with the fat content is good for a couple of years in a cool pantry.
I've used this meat several times and I like it just fine.
I'd eat it, then again I'm super high right now.
LOL Thanks for watching!
There is nothing better than honesty in the comment section. How refreshing! Nice.
Best comment lmao. Agreed.
"Have some more sloppy joes. I made 'em extra sloppy for yous"
My friend, this is one of the best Sloppy Joe recipes, I have ever had. Thank you. Made it with uncanned beef.
what's all that beef in my sodium xD
LOL
MoMoIRoMoI lol 😂
Lol you're so funny... And cute.
Love your videos, great sense of humor and I dig that you try all of the things that I see at the store, but never have the balls to actually try them. But then again, I've opened many a can of crap late at night and been satisfied.
this is by far my favorite youtube channel.
TheWolfePit KEYSTONE MAKES MY BEER TOO
I use Keystone Canned Meats for prepping. However, I also have no hesitations about using them when I just don't wanna cook the hamburger meat for certain casseroles or for my nacho cheese sauce. Sometimes even my spaghetti sauce. The Keystone canned turkey and chicken meats are awesome too.
I have a couple cans of these, I was put off by the taste though.
I guess I'll have to try to make sloppy joes out of em.
I have a can of this in my pantry. It was part of my prep for the lockdown. Time to use it I do believe!
very cool Larry! you missed an opportunity to combine it with manwich!
+michael landry I was thinking the same thing... true health food..
lol
+michael landry Canned foods that won't kill you are too hard to find Mike, I had to ensure I didn't ruin that with another canned product that is full of salt!! LOL
+Joe Bucci The meat itself is actually good for you, but the Manwich mix on the other hand....eeh
TheWolfePit hope it never comes down to some random dude killing ya for a cannameat
I have had my cans for quite awhile and the date on the one i just checked is 4-12-2024
I love your videos. Thanks
LOL!! Thanks for watching!!
The canned beef is great for beef and noodles.never had the ground beef.its local raised in my hometown.walmart has it cheaper than the meat store keystone meats.
Love this channel
Thanks buddy. I know I'm late, sorry I'm going back and watching a lot of your old videos. Haha. Hope you're well.
bruh so many sauce jus buy a can of manwhich

destrik honestly I was thinking the same thing
destrik. I agree. Manwitch is pretty good.
Whats manwhich
Sauce already seasoned up for sloppy joes.
Nice one Larry!! it's ideal thing to buy in bulk, keep it in the cupboard for when you need it!! It's better than starving.
+Project-Bassplayer777 Definitely!!!! Thanks for watching!
Project-Bassplayer777 spam and corned beef taste like the best thing ever when it comes to that point
have you done any videos on caned salmon? i like those not as gross as other canned things
i heard canned salmon is common prison food.
One only used it to put with salad
I love canned salmon.....I grew up eating my moms salmon cakes! I will do a video on it soon! Thanks for the idea!
TheWolfePit welcome I've used it to make them before too but want to see your recipe sure it's better
just wow smh
Keystone also makes beef pieces in a can. Beef and sea salt. Nothing else. I ran across this on Alaska Prepper's youtube video. He shows how to prepare foods for long term storage. Very interesting material. He critiqued this beef and according to him, these cans would last years beyond the use by date on the can, although he does recommend storage in a cool environment. Thanks for your video!!!
When you added all the condiments it added a ton of sodium
I bought a case some time ago, pretty good stuff.. I had to click immediately 🥰🥰🥰🥰
That's the only canned meat brand I would buy.... Absolutely, awesome!
14 servings per can? really?
LOL Thanks for watching!
Yeah, and tbh thats still a lot of salt ~1600mg sodium per can
@@humpheadsassy4400 3g of salt in 800g of meat is negligible.
LOL Thanks for watching!
my mom gave me a can and it was so unsightly that I gave it to my dog and he rejected it.
LOL!
Denisia Crawford If the dog rejects it you know its bad
Mofker GT lol
I always keep a few cans of those in the pantry. My local grocery store sells mince made with previously frozen parts, so unless I'm making something in a large batch or eat it for a few days in a row I always end up throwing some away because I can't re-freeze it.
BTW, congrats on reaching 100,000 subs mate! You deserve it!
Thank you very much I really appreciate the support!!
Totally misleading to call the product 'Sloppy Joe' when it clearly isn't - you needed to add about 6 other ingredients to make it what you expected. And I don;t think most people would have the common sense to drain off the fat! Good video though, thank you.
That product isn't called 'Sloppy Joe'. Did you not watch the video? He made a Sloppy Joe using canned 'Ground Beef'.
Yep, you're quite right. Don't know what I was thinking! Apologies.
Clevon Gordon Lmao wtf. Thanks for the laugh.
He's not 80 lmao
I've bought it in the past and found it was totally useable on campouts. Loved it.
There is an ad below the video for a case of this garbage for $179.97.
won't be garbage if the bombs fall
Man, this must be early Wolfpit without the video formula.
Andrew Jackson yes but the TVP can cause issues due to phido estrogen from the soy.
Damn soy boy
Andrew Jackson .. im new at this what is tvp and where do u buy it
Might be useful for making travel food. We don't camp but have done some picnic & hotel room cooking. There are so many things you can make with ground beef. Our local grocer's web page show it available but about twice the price of fresh GB.
No offence man. But with all the extra ingredients you add I am sure any road kill would be appetizing.
charles vereschagin 😩😂😂😂
Nice review. I am sure I would put this in the emergency food supply closet, but I don't think i would eat it as an every day item. Overall great video and review ;-)

+No Hippie BBQ & Cooking Thanks Lyle! I hope other processors see this and maybe take not the public is tired of the crap they produce.
Nice recipe for the sloppy joes! You might consider removing the meat and lightly sauteing the onions first and then add back the meat and other ingrediments! I like your everyman style and appreciate your work on behalf of *We the People* - I just subscribed!!!
i love that you teach us to take a chance and not just buy the same old stuff all the time.
And the can size is kind of big for one person.
Very
All of the keystone products I have tried are very good.
My family loves Keystone. Just finished dinner Sloppy Joes with their ground beef.
Delicious!
The Keystone products are excellent. The roast beef cubes are particularly good, we love those for beef and dumplings or beef and noodles.
I canned hamburger meat one time. Very good and handy to have on hand for quick recipes. I will can some more since I have used my stash all up.
That's great news for me!I am a trucker and had no idea they made canned ground beef.
Very helpful. I happen to have a can of this. I think I'll heat it up as you did, skim off the fat and add onion, garlic, spices and a can of chili beans to make chili con carne. 😊
Again love this review! Keep theses style of reviewers coming!
Thank you very much!
You're correct. My neighbors husband works in a factory that makes these (not this brand) and he said it's cooked in a huge hot water vat in the can.
I am going to look for that, but I don't know if they will have it in my Wal-Mart. I live in NW PA, so they might.
