That turned out AWESOME. The lessons you've been teaching us have been a blessing. Today, my square carbide did things others say it can't do and shaving were flying everywhere. I keep watching your videos I'll have a PHD in carbideology🤣
As always both a great and informative video. I reccomnended your carbite chisels to friends and they have just ordered your standard set and ultimate hollowed. Yet another convert.
Hi Glenn and Liza another great video and a good laugh too I must admit I'm doing a lot less sanding now and turning a lot better keep the videos coming
Thanks, Glenn, for answering my query on sanding paste, and incidentally, the reason for using sanding sealer. The instructions that come with these sort of products always say 'how' to use them, but rarely explain 'why'. After watching your last couple of videos I am casting covetous eyes on my pal's open fire woodpile. You really proved your points about how to achieve fine finishes, and I do hope you keep that very pretty little bowl - which I'm sure Lisa won't let you put on the fire. May I also add what a splendid job Lisa does with the camera, always getting us the best view by constantly changing position and zoom, as you caress the wood to its final shape. Did she have professional training - or is it just natural talent?
Thanks Don. Yes, Liza did make me keep the bowl. 🤪I thought she would. Don, it's pure luck she can video. Lol. No honestly, she is doing a good job. I had made an arm to hold the camera, so I could film myself turning, but it's awkward as I can't see if I am getting in the way of the camera sometimes. Liza finds using the tripod better as she can follow me and get in closer to get those close up shots.
Hiya folks, more proof that the Carbide naysayers are wrong. A beautiful finish can be achieved using "scrapers!" Obviously the right person turning helps a bit so please keep on teaching us. During the video you mentioned a company six hours away that supplies you with wood, i heard it as Stonebase but can't find them on line... Could you please let me have a linnk to them? Thanks and my brand new SCH5 is SUPERB!
Hi James, it was Styles and Bates but they are closing down at the end of March. Carbide woodturning tools are only scrapers, if they are used as scrapers. Glad you are enjoying using your SCH5.
Hi Glenn bought a set of your carbide’s a few years ago since you been on RUclips I have learned to use them better would be nice to see you make a set
No Roy, that's my business, my livelihood. RUclips is just an avenue to show people who have bought my chisels, how to use them correctly and how they can get clean, smooth finishes.
It might be punky Glenn but it sure is pretty. You sure do a nice job with the carbide gauges. You said you make your own sanding paste if you don't mind me asking what goes into making it. Blessings to you and Liza
Amazing video glen. Sorry been on this one since late last night. Jumping over to today's video. I have an abundance of this kinda wood so certainly something i can practice with. I no you say its going in fire but take that one what kinda price would you put that at?? 🏴👍🤔 Oh and can u make have u made a video on your paste finish??
Thanks Michael. I don't sell these sorts of things. Only doing them for the channel. No, I won't be making any videos on the pastes I use or how I make my chisels.
Great job on these videos. I have been watching for a couple of months now :) I have been looking at your face shield with the filters and have not been able to find any like your. What brand is that if you don't mind? thank you
Very impressive result for such a nasty piece of wood! I might have missed something on a previous video, but what is going on with the sandpaper? You don't seem to be changing grits at all, but the result would suggest otherwise...
Well I do keep telling people how good I am. The proof is visible. My method works. I do say when I'm changing grit. I go from 180 to 320, sometimes to 400. The sanding paste does the rest. It has been mentioned a few times about my sanding. But how can you explain the finish I get?
@@Anilm3 He has a pre-prepared stack of strips of gradually increasing grit numbers of sandpaper on the lathe bed, and swaps them off camera. They are all the same brand/colour so it appears that he is using just one strip for the whole process prior to the sanding paste.

Glenn and Liza that wee bowl turned out really lovely even although it was puncky wood, some lovely spolting as well.
Amazing what you can get from a bit of firewood.

That is my own paste. I don't give the details out. Plenty available around.
did you have to do any grinding on your carbide tool holders to allow you to "ride the bevel" or was there enough clearance on the original handles?
If you buy tools from the website, they are made to do the cuts I do.
I loved watching this video Glenn, but is there a reason why you didn’t use the SCH 3 on the inside of the bowl? Keep them coming guys. Bill.
It was because of the cut I wanted to demonstrate.
