Glenn & Liza Teagle Woodturning & Carbide Chisels
Великобритания
Добавлен 9 янв 2014
I have been a Carpenter and Woodturner for 40 years. I started making my carbide woodturning tools to sell over 15 years ago now.
I have always tried to keep them at an affordable price for everyone and give the best quality I can for that price. Every tool I sell is hand made by me and is only available from me. My aim on this channel is not to turn a project as such, but to demonstrate how to get a good, clean and smooth finish using my carbide tools. I have been asked many times by customers for videos on how to use my carbide tools to achieve this. I want to help the viewers with any questions they may have, when it comes to using carbide woodturning tools. I won't just explain what to do, I will demonstrate it so you can clearly see how to achieve it and see that it can be done safely, easily and I will also point out the danger points to avoid getting those nasty catches that just ruin your day... I will be posting videos to demonstrate what each tool can be useful for.

Happy Anniversary to you both.
Thanks Stevey.
really helpful videos to watch on how to use carbide tools on the angle, I'm interested to know is it easier to use your round bar tools on the angle rather than the square ones?
Nice to meet you both today thanks for the baiter thanks Andy and bela the dog
Yes Andy nice to meet you and Bela today. Video going up later. Glenn & Liza
That was a great lesson, not just for the carbide but for most tools.
Thanks Mark. Glad you found it helpful.
best videos on youtube. should have been a teacher mate. learn something new everytime
Thanks Geoff. Glad you are enjoying the videos and finding them helpful.
Another wonderful teaching thanks Glenn great and wonderful information Blessings.
Glad you enjoyed it Wade.
Utterly fantastic lesson.
Thank you.
Now i no what to do with the pile of logs i have lying outside my workshop just need get them cut and split bowls for Christmas presents. Wicked job Mate loving this wee rerun series with the type 3 set. 👍🏴
Glad you enjoyed it mate.
Just got my standard set and the parting tool. Great timing with these videos!
Thanks for letting us know. Happy turning.
Thanks, Glenn. So much to learn, but you are making it look achievable, not easy but achievable and enjoyable.
You are welcome Neil. Glad you are finding them helpful.
Great video Glenn.I will be getting a set if possible.
You are incredible on the lathe
Welcome to the channel. Thank you for your comment. Most appreciated.
Was a pleasure to watch you work on this bowl. It's nice to see how you overcome some minor problems in real time, too.
We try to do as much as we can in real time, but the channel only grows with views. People don't tend to watch long videos. We try to suit everyone, so we will do a mixture of short, or speeded up and narrated or just speeded up. If I encounter problems, I do leave them in and show you how I deal with that issue. Thanks for watching Danny. Glad you liked it.
Great advice! As a fairly new turner, sometimes it’s hard not to exceed my capabilities. You see a video and boy “ that looks easy “ ….. but you forget how many hours of turning time the presenter has. Sure they make it look easy, but don’t try to run before you learn to walk 🤠🇨🇱
Great advice Randy. Start small and work your way up, using your skills learnt along the way.
You could have a sideline selling those jigs to the ‘great unwashed’. You’d make a k*lling!
I have made the aluminium version and it is available for sale on my website.
Relied earlier in our other channel name.
Glenn, I don’t know how many years of experience you have, but you accomplish (what appear to be) the simplest of tasks with ease! Us mere mortals are, hopefully, hanging onto your ‘coattails’. Thank your for explaining such tasks with a degree of confidence & patience I cannot seam to grasp. I’ll get there in decades. It’s a bit unfortunate that I ain’t got got decades in which to practice - but I’ll die trying, & enjoying it! Ta.
Well over 40 years experience. Glad you enjoyed the video. Just keep practicing. You'll get there. Happy turning.
Brilliant and very informative I agree its deffo Laburnum
Yeah me too. I know it is but it was given to me as plum and I'm not going to get into any arguments. It's just wood. Thanks for watching.
Another great video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
Another set of good informative videos Glenn, harking back to your really early ones. A great lesson, reminder & refresh for everybody. Magic.! 👍🏴
Thanks Jim. Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful. Thanks to you and Christine for the Buy Me A Coffee too.
Laughed so hard... at the man up comment😂😂😂 lucky us ladies don't need that step
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching all the way in Australia.
Great video, exactly what i needed right now. Gave my new Type 3 set a go on Saturday (thank you, they are amazing chisels, and an absolute bargain). The tools are great, but the information here is the cherry on top - so many little nuggets that make a huge difference to how I'd use them. Loving your work and videos, please keep them coming.
Welcome to the channel and welcome to the darkside - carbides. Glad you are enjoying using your chisels. Happy turning.
That was my problem at the beginning, I decided a 12*3" was a suitable size. When it hit my chest, I decided it wasn't.
@@davidrobertson1344 oops.
Lots of good advice and a great no nonsense presentation style
Welcome to the channel Nigel. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the video. Plenty available for you to catch up on. We now have over 500 videos, all with a little tip or two. Enjoy.
This Yorkshireman enjoys your content. Keep it up Glenn & Liza
Thank you. Welcome to the channel. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Evening glen, hope yourself and wife doing well, bought a set of your standards short handle used a few months back, lately im finding the square isnt cutting seems to just create dust ive attempted sharpening on a diamond stone but no improvment, any ideas ? thanks
Yes. The only idea is that you are scraping rather than cutting, which will dull the cutters quicker, which is why other companies say to scrape with them. I can't say why you're not able to re-sharpen them as I can't see what you're doing. I have put out there even on the Chatty turning video how easy it is to sharpen them. Maybe have a look at that. The only option is to replace the cutter if you've used all the edges of the cutter.
I tried making a Christmas tree. Not like that. It didn't turn out. To say the least, the branches broke off while turning. I'll try it your way.
Please do give it a go. Let us know how you get on. Happy turning.
From Ohio over here. Always love your videos. Very informative, educational and entertaining. You're very lucky, no way I could have my wife in the shop. Liza sounds like so much fun.
Welcome to the channel. Glad you are enjoying the videos. We enjoy making them. We have fun all the time. That's our outlook on life, to have fun everyday.
Another excellent video Mr Teagle. So helpful. 🤩 Thanks for uploading. I’m looking forward to receiving my 6mm chisel which I ordered today 😊
Thank you for your comment. Most appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the video.
For anyone reading this i have glens type 3 set they are phenomenal....... Fantastic video mate proper informative as ever. Hope you had fun at goth weekend and hope your top hat lived up to expectations. Im about to mill/blank some spalted beech and cherry logs if you facy any?? 👍🏴
It was brilliant Michael. I'm ok with wood at the moment mate. Thank you so much for the offer. Greatly appreciated. Enjoy turning.
Did you see that you made the BBC news channel on there app at Whitby, fabulous,
Our photos last year were in the Northern Echo and the Yorkshire Post. Fame at last. Lol
Oh that’s hysterical! Well done!
Welcome to the channel. Thank you Michelle for watching to the end.
Love this, would it work with pine as all I have is 2x2 offcuts of it ?
Yes David. Give it a go and let us know how you got on.
@@glennteagleofukwoodcraftca5308 went out and bought a bit of beech and it was a disaster. I was putting the marks with parting tool and got the bit where the 38mm drill hole 30mm in was and it just came apart. 😡
@@davidharrison1558 Oops
very nice
Thank you Bernie. Welcome to the channel.
Hi Glenn and Liza I have bought two lots of tea lights from Amazon and they are approximately 26.5mm diameter and fall out unless I use masking tape on the circumference do you have a source of 38 mm tea lights please Best wishes Ken
We get ours from Home Bargains Ken.
Very useful. Thanks. Just so I’m clear, spindle gouge size is the actual round bar diameter they’re made of? I’m in Canada, so always leery of the different ways bowl gouges are measured. Do you make your own aluminum ferrules that go on a wooden handle? I’d like to make some and have a metal lathe. Just wondering what you’ve found works best.
That's right Andrew it's the size of the actual bar. Yes I made my own aluminium ferrules.
@ thanks. I’m assuming there’s a spigot on the ferrule that gets glued into the wood? How long and what diameter works for you?
@@AndrewMoizer it all depends on what chisel you are doing it for. I hollow my handle so the bar can go all the way down.
Aha, they're brilliant! Excellent paint job, Liza. Nice demo on the round carbide, Glen. Shaping these tools so you can ride the bevel is genius!
Thanks Danny. Glad you are enjoying watching the videos.
I’d like to see you using the bait needles you turn ….. Not familiar with those having only done lake and stream fishing 🤠🇨🇱
Good to hear from you Randy. No problem. Next video. Thanks for watching.
I've been looking for a face shield like yours and all I can find are ones with the filters on the bottom and feel they will obstruct vision. Where can I get one like yours?
I did a video on it. Please see the link ruclips.net/video/HRskMIZEj4E/видео.html
Hi.great video. Thank you. What grit is the CBN wheel that you put on?
Welcome to the channel. Thank you. It's 180 grit.
Are you fishing macro next need to see you got some timber for you I can't turn or cut down, only 3bits I am sure you'll sort it just want some live worms for exchange
I don't have any live worms I'm afraid. I don't dig for worms. I don't know when I'm at Makro next. We don't plan, we just go last minute.
You produce some good projects but as an international tutor and demonstrator l would never advocate touching a rotating piece of material, more expecially a piece that has bark attached. I have seen many turners do this and receive nasty wooden spelks in fingers. Two things to do if you want to check your material is round or smooth. One, stop the lathe or using the back of the gouge on the rotating timber check that way. Just a couple of small points but l have never seen a turner touch rotating timber as much as you do.
Touching the wood is not the problem, it is how you touch it. I have been turning for 43 years. I am a professional turner and turn 7 days a week. Touching the piece when it is turning has never been a problem. I have never had a splinter or cut a finger while doing so. Anyone injured in doing so had not done so correctly. It’s the same as getting a catch. Catches only happen when the tool is not presented properly. Present the tool correctly and a catch will never happen.
Hi Glenn and Liza fantastic video so well explained,I have been using traditional chisels more since using your carbides but with some trepidation I now fully understand the theory and will practice more with both. My detail chisel arrived this morning and coincided with watching this video so thank you for covering the detail I am ok with the square round and au cutters and feel more. Confident about trying the detail Please can you tell me how to find the previous eleven videos as I would like to watch them all I would have given up wood turning if it had not been for your videos and chisels I am so grateful as I have been retired for twenty five years and without my renewed interest in turning I think I would been glued to my chair watching television!
Thank you Ken for your comment. Really appreciate it. Glad we have helped you get back into turning again. If you click on the channel name (the G) then in the search button (the magnify mirror symbol) and put in Standard Type 3 Chisel Set. They should all come up. Good luck. Happy watching.
I don't think I'll see you as I'm in Australia
Nice but the newer chisels are to high priced, when a box of originals can be bought for the price of on of these newer ones
This tool cost's £35 . High price, I think not
Recent subscriber here! Great channel! Was reviewing your videos on sharpening for pennies and I want to incorporate them for myself. My question is is there a dfference in the measurements if you use a 6 inch grinder? Is it a matter of shortening the spindle length for the clamping mechanism or adding length to the other measurements? Or, am I overthinking it? Please advise.
Welcome to the channel. Thanks for subscribing It helps the channel to grow. Much appreciated. Measurements are the same from base to centre of wheel and from face of wheel out is the same as I gave.
With a different ‘paint make-over’ he’s a lovely Frosty the Snowman. A great turning, as per usual.
The snowman has also been recently done. keep watching. More videos to catch up on. Lol
Recent subscriber here! Was just wondering how to adapt this to a 6 inch grinder is it take 2 inches off the spindle length of the clamping mechanism or adding 2 inches to the other measurements or am I totally off base and have to figure it out myself? Please advise! Love the channel, by the way!
Welcome to the channel. Thanks for subscribing and watching. Distances/measurements should be exactly the same.
What size spindle gouge would that one be? Looks ½ or 3/8", just not sure. It sure works a treat once you've tuned it up! Thanks.
1/2 inch.
This has to be the absolute BEST sharpening video I've come across, and some great turning tips too! I only wish I'd found it a couple of weeks ago before I bought a second "slow" speed grinder. I have my old lathe that is just like your grey one (I had thought about using it for polishing, but not sharpening <doh>). I have also been wondering about platforms, and your jigs that go on the round bar make such great sense. I can weld so making them up will be no problem. Many thanks. I'm going to make another coffee and then look for the continuation. Oh, what grit belt do you use on the skew sharpener?
At that time it was an 80 grit belt. I don't use that anymore. I sharpen on the CBN wheel now. Hollow grind is better. I was just showing people a cheap way of sharpening.
