At least in France, vintage items are much cheaper than new ones. This is how the French get into the habit of "thrifting" for everything. The idea is to save money while having a quite decent objects that will serve you for many years at a good price. Unfortunatelly, I've found that in some Asian countries, including my home country, this isn't the case. Most European vintage items can only be bought by people with deep pockets which is quite ironic 🙃

Vintage items are indeed pricey. However, in Japan, some used items can actually be cheaper than new ones. Regardless, with houses being so small in Tokyo, it's hard to fit any extra items 🙃
