  • Kelly Baum (Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Curator of Contemporary Art, Modern and Contemporary Art) and Randall Griffey (Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art), take us on a virtual tour of Alice Neel: People Come First, which presents Alice Neel (1900-1984) as one of the twentieth century’s most radical artists, and a champion of social justice whose longstanding commitment to humanist principles inspired her life as well as her art.

    Wow, very inspiring!
Art is the closest thing to actual magic in this world. Alice Neel shows us this by reaching through time with her paintings, and grasping our emotions with her imagery.

Art is what I study and do, and my thoughts about Neel's portraits are that I can't think of any other portait painter who puts the whole of the person right in the room with you the way she does. It must be weird seeing so many all together, like being in a massive gathering of people who are very personally close to you.

the great Neel. Two comments: 1) Note that curator carefully avoids using gendered pronouns in discussion of Jackie Curtis. Just, interesting. 2) Curator's comment about Warhol's "arrested development" is presumptuous. Warhol may indeed have been developmentally arrested but Neel, the great humanist, would not have so judged him. It is the curator's judgement, not Neel's, and based on what we now "know," not on what Neel knew.

It is always great to see a new artist's work that you've never seen before. The paintings look to me just a tiny bit unfinished. I think she rushed through them, but like Van Gogh, she has shown us how she painted them, and Van Gogh certainly is a crowd-pleaser. The funny thing is that what is charming to some people is the opposite to others. I would have liked to see the paintings worked on until more of the person emerged. This way, they're cartoonish. By seeing how a work was done, many people would like it that way and strongly disagree with me.
