    This old style Tomari Chinto/crane Kata...
    Kanazawa Sensei has his Shotokanized version in his Complete Kata book called "Gankaku Sho"
    Now I wish I had more reference materials for his version of Seiunchin/Seipai/SuparEnPai/Nipaipo - NijuHachi 🤔
    He showed NijuHachi and Gankaku Sho in some of his last seminars in Ireland (RIP).

    Woah, that cross hand grip is almost identical to an Italian wrestling form from the 1400s!
    I study historical European martial arts, and Italian master Fiore de'i Liberi has a really similar form where you block a strike with crossed hands and apply an arm lock really quickly (2nd master of the dagger is the name of the form). Cool to see different martial arts in different continents developing almost the same techniques.

    Nice. It was cool seeing how their Chinto look. After getting Nijushiho down, I look forward to beginning Gankaku. I think the kata I’ve had a challenge so far in learning was Kanku dai.

    • @iamsh1han797
      @iamsh1han797 2 года назад

      After 5 or 6 solid attempts you will master kanku dai but you must make sure your Sensei knows it properly also. A good Sensei will always bring the best out of you. It was Sensei Funakoshi's favourite Kara. How are you with Unsu?

    • @YoukaiSlayer12
      @YoukaiSlayer12 2 года назад

      @@iamsh1han797 oh when I said that I was referring to when I was learning Kanku Dai a few years ago. I do fine with it now. But I still work at parts of it here at home. As for Unsu I haven’t started that one yet.
      Been generally focusing on those I can do within the apartment itself without any trouble.

    Hey Yusuke! The hardest Kata in Kenyu-Kai I think it would be seienchin or maybe in a competition Sanchin. There is also sanshou which I think it's amazing from Kenyu-Kai.

    I had been doing Shotokan for about 20 years when introduced to Nijushiho. The 45 degree angles were hard for me to learn too. I put that down to the H pattern from the various Heian Kata etc.

    Hey, german first degree black belt in shotokan here...for my second dan grading end of this year i will have to do Bassai Dai, Tekki Sandan, Sochin and Jion, which i all like very much and can memorize easily.... however. the hardest one to memorize for me technique-wise is Unsu (i think that's obvious for Shotokan :D ), however i also struggle with the very focused slow breathing in Hangetsu, I am normally used to have a much higher cadence of breathing ;)

    This version of Chinto is also known as Tomari Chinto to some people. I know little about that Kata, but it is still one of my most favourite ones. I was a brown belt when I first learned it. Luckily the diagonal pattern was never an issue to me. I learned it as any other Kata I have been taught. Thanks to my (now deceased) teachers once in a while habit to let us practise known Kata with eyes blindfolded or to just change the orientation within the room by letting us turn around 180 degree, I never had any struggle to adapt to a diagonal pattern.

    I think this is interesting, I practice Wado-Ryu, which has a lot of familiarity’s with Shotokan, wado ryu is very closely related as our founder was one of the senior students to Shotokans founder, and they worked together closely for many years.
    But our founder trained under many of the Okinawan masters. Besides Funakoshi.
    So in Wado-Ryu katas the names, angles and also some of the movements, are often more closely related to Okinawan styles than Shotokan.
    The question of what of our katas had the hardest angles, made me think for a while.
    I don’t think I’ve ever experienced having any trouble with having different angles in kata.
    Having some interesting angles, if anything just makes it easier to remember.
    I thought it was easier to learn the Pinan katas that had a few 45 degree turns.
    And in later kata its a turn and direction as any other.
    But I can see how it would be something very unfamiliar that takes a while to wrap your head around. Probably harder than for a beginner, if you spent years of doing techniques in almost only 90 and 180 degree turns.
    A lot of habit to try and break out of.

    Gyaku neko ashi (reverse cat foot) is an interesting way of describing that stance. Makes sense! It's more commonly called kosa dachi (cross stance) because the legs are crossed, but the principle of neko ashi is to place most of your weight on one foot with the other resting lightly and prepared for action (like a cat), so I definitely follow the thought process of calling it reverse cat foot as the prepped foot is behind rather than in front.

    I haven't gone above my rank in the forms for my style, so I don't know which one is the most difficult concerning angles. Angles haven't been a huge issue for me so far cause it takes me quite awhile to learn a new form, but when I do, I only memorize a few moves at a time so I have an easy time with just a few. If I try to learn any new form all at once, I get lost right away.

    Matsubayashi-ryu teaches 8-directional movement in almost every kata, so the angles never seemed hard to me. Shorinji-ryu Chinto is very similar to ours. It's even easier with newer kata that have been developed to gradually teach beginners this approach of angular movement.
